Moths show up in your house for one reason: something inside is feeding their larvae. The adults you see fluttering around aren’t actually eating anything. They’re mating and laying eggs near a food source so their offspring can feast the moment they hatch. Figuring out which type of moth you have tells you exactly where to look and what to do about it.
Two Types of Indoor Moths, Two Different Problems
Almost every indoor moth falls into one of two categories: clothes moths or pantry moths. They look different, eat different things, and live in different parts of your home.
Clothes moths are tiny, only about a quarter inch long at rest, and they’re pale gold or buff-colored. They’re weak fliers that flutter erratically rather than flying in a straight line. You won’t find them circling your lights. Instead, they stay close to dark, undisturbed areas like the back of a closet or beneath heavy furniture. Their larvae feed exclusively on animal-based fibers: wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather. These materials contain keratin, a protein the larvae can digest. Cotton and synthetics are rarely touched unless they’re blended with wool or heavily stained with food or body oils.
Pantry moths (often called Indianmeal moths) are slightly larger and more colorful, with a distinctive two-toned wing pattern that’s copper or reddish-brown on the outer half. You’ll typically spot them flying near kitchen ceilings or walls. Their larvae eat dry goods: grains, cereal, flour, nuts, dried fruit, birdseed, and pet food. If you’re finding moths near your kitchen, start checking your pantry shelves.
How Moths Got Into Your Home
Moths rarely fly in through an open window by accident. Most infestations start with something you brought inside.
Pantry moths typically arrive as eggs or larvae already hiding in food packaging. Bulk-bin grains, bags of flour, boxes of cereal, and birdseed are common carriers. The eggs are microscopic, so you won’t notice them at the store. Once inside your warm pantry, they hatch, feed, and reproduce quickly.
Clothes moths often hitchhike on secondhand items. Thrifted sweaters, vintage rugs, bulk fabric, and antique upholstered furniture can all harbor dormant larvae tucked into folds and seams. Even new wool or silk items stored in a warehouse could carry eggs.
Some moths do enter through physical gaps. Cracks around window and door frames thinner than a credit card can serve as entry points, especially when outdoor lights draw night-flying species toward your home. Unscreened attic and crawl-space vents also let outdoor moths drift inside, where they find stored textiles and settle in. But in most cases, the infestation started with a contaminated item, not an open door.
Why Your Home Is the Perfect Environment
Moths thrive in warm, dark, undisturbed spaces. Your heated home provides exactly the conditions their larvae need to grow. Below about 50°F, moth activity slows dramatically, which is why infestations tend to get worse in warmer months or in homes kept at comfortable temperatures year-round.
Female moths seek out quiet corners, the backs of closets, spaces behind furniture, and deep pantry shelves to lay their eggs. A single female can deposit her eggs all at once or spread them over about 18 days. Those eggs hatch in 7 to 14 days, and the larvae then feed for two to three months on average, though in cooler or less ideal conditions they can survive for up to seven months before pupating. After about 15 to 20 days as pupae, they emerge as adults, live for just 5 to 25 days, and start the cycle again. Up to eight generations can be born in a single year, which is why a small problem can become a serious infestation fast.
Signs You Have an Active Infestation
The adult moths are the most visible sign, but by the time you see them, larvae have likely been feeding for weeks. Here’s what to look for depending on which type you’re dealing with.
Clothes Moth Damage
Check the hidden portions of wool and silk garments: beneath collars, inside cuffs, along seams. You’re looking for irregular holes, surface grazing where fibers have been thinned, or both. One species, the casemaking clothes moth, builds a tiny cigar-shaped silken case (about 3/8 inch long) that it drags everywhere and enlarges as it grows. You may find these cases stuck to fabric. The other common species, the webbing clothes moth, leaves behind silken tubes and patches of webbing matted with excrement and fabric particles. The droppings often match the color of whatever fabric the larvae have been eating.
Don’t limit your search to the closet. Clothes moths also infest upholstered furniture (inside and out), carpeted areas beneath heavy furniture, down pillows and comforters, taxidermy mounts, and even air ducts where they feed on accumulated lint and shed pet hair.
With fur items, look for hairs clipped at their base, leaving loose fur and patches of exposed hide underneath.
Pantry Moth Signs
Open your dry goods and look for fine silken webbing, especially near the top of containers or along package seams. You may find small cream-colored caterpillars crawling on shelves or up walls. Clumping in flour or grains that shouldn’t be clumpy is another giveaway. Sometimes you’ll notice tiny holes chewed through cardboard or thin plastic packaging.
How to Get Rid of Them
Eliminating moths requires targeting the larvae and eggs, not just swatting the adults you see flying around. The key is being thorough and doing everything more or less at the same time so surviving larvae can’t simply move to a new hiding spot.
For pantry moths: Remove everything from your pantry and inspect each item. Toss anything with webbing, larvae, or signs of damage. Wipe down every shelf, crack, and corner with a solution of water and vinegar. Transfer dry goods you’re keeping into airtight glass or hard plastic containers. Going forward, inspect new grain products when you bring them home and store them sealed immediately.
For clothes moths: Wash or dry-clean all natural-fiber clothing, blankets, and textiles. Laundering in hot water or running items through a hot dryer cycle kills eggs and larvae. For delicate items that can’t take heat, sealing them in a bag and freezing them for at least 72 hours works too. While everything is out of your closets and drawers, wash the interior surfaces with a water-and-vinegar solution, paying special attention to corners, shelf brackets, and anywhere dust collects. Vacuum carpeted areas thoroughly, especially under and behind furniture.
Pheromone traps can make a real difference after the initial deep clean. These sticky traps release a scent that attracts male moths, preventing them from mating and breaking the breeding cycle. Make sure you buy the right type for your specific moth: clothes moth traps and pantry moth traps use different pheromones and aren’t interchangeable.
Natural deterrents like lavender sachets and cedar blocks can help discourage moths from returning to cleaned areas, but they won’t kill an active infestation on their own. Think of them as a maintenance step, not a first line of defense.
Preventing a Repeat Infestation
Quarantine secondhand clothing, rugs, and upholstered items before integrating them into your home. Freezing them in sealed bags for 72 hours kills any hidden larvae or eggs. Store off-season wool and silk garments in airtight containers or vacuum-sealed bags rather than leaving them hanging in a dark closet for months. Regularly vacuum beneath furniture, along baseboards, and inside closets to remove the lint, hair, and fiber debris that clothes moth larvae feed on.
In the kitchen, keep dry goods in sealed containers from the day you buy them. Rotate stock so nothing sits untouched for months. If you buy birdseed or pet food in bulk, store it in a sealed bin rather than leaving the bag open in a garage or mudroom.
Moths exploit neglect. The items you don’t touch, the corners you don’t clean, and the shelves you don’t check are exactly where they set up. Regular attention to these forgotten spaces is the simplest and most effective prevention there is.
