White Fuzzy Bugs on Plants: How to Get Rid of Them

Those white fuzzy bugs on your plants are most likely mealybugs, though woolly aphids and cottony cushion scale can look remarkably similar. All three coat themselves in a waxy, cotton-like substance that makes them easy to spot but surprisingly stubborn to eliminate. Identifying which pest you’re dealing with helps you choose the right treatment, but the good news is that most control methods overlap.

Identifying the Three Main Culprits

Mealybugs are the most common white fuzzy pest on houseplants. Adults are small, oval, and soft-bodied, typically covered in a powdery white wax that gives them their cottony appearance. Look closely and you’ll see a yellow-orange body underneath that waxy coating. They tend to cluster in sheltered spots: leaf joints, the undersides of leaves, and along stems where new growth emerges. You may also notice white, cottony egg masses tucked into crevices.

Woolly aphids look similar at first glance but have a distinctly different body shape. All aphids are pear-shaped with long legs and antennae, while mealybugs are more oval and flattened. Woolly aphids secrete the same white, fluffy wax over their bodies, but if you brush it away, the insects underneath are typically dark: blackish, brown, reddish, or purple, depending on the species. Adults are tiny, about 1 to 3 mm long. Woolly apple aphids, one of the most common species, feed in groups on bark and stems of apple trees, cotoneaster, and pyracantha. Another species, the woolly hackberry aphid, infests Chinese hackberry trees. If your white fuzzy bugs are on an outdoor tree rather than a houseplant, woolly aphids are a strong possibility.

Cottony cushion scale is less common indoors but shows up on citrus and ornamental trees. The adult female produces a large, ridged white egg sac that’s distinctive once you know what to look for. It’s larger and more structured than the loose cottony masses mealybugs leave behind.

How These Pests Damage Plants

All three insects are sap feeders. They pierce plant tissue and suck out the sugary fluid that moves through the plant’s vascular system, gradually draining the plant’s energy. A small number won’t cause visible harm, but as populations grow, you’ll notice yellowing leaves, stunted new growth, and an overall wilted or droopy appearance.

The secondary damage is often more obvious than the bugs themselves. Mealybugs and woolly aphids excrete a sticky substance called honeydew as they feed. This clear, sugary residue coats leaves and nearby surfaces, and it quickly becomes a breeding ground for sooty mold, a black fungal coating that blocks light from reaching the leaf surface. If you’re seeing shiny, sticky leaves or a dark film developing on foliage, that’s a reliable sign of a sap-feeding insect even before you spot the bugs. Ants are also attracted to honeydew, so a sudden ant trail leading to your plant can be another early clue.

Woolly apple aphids cause a unique type of damage: they can produce swollen, knotty galls on branches and roots that weaken the tree over time.

Rubbing Alcohol for Small Infestations

For a handful of mealybugs on a houseplant, a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol is the fastest fix. Touch the swab directly to each visible bug. The alcohol dissolves their protective wax coating and kills them on contact. The 70% concentration works better than stronger versions (91% or 99%) because the water content slows evaporation and gives the alcohol more time to work. Higher concentrations evaporate so fast they’re actually less effective and more likely to burn leaves.

For a larger infestation, mix a spray solution: one part 70% isopropyl alcohol to three parts water, with a few drops of liquid castile soap per cup to help the solution spread and stick. If you only have 91% alcohol, use a 1:4 ratio instead. Spray in the evening or early morning, never in direct sunlight or under grow lights, because the combination of alcohol and intense light can scorch foliage. Let the solution sit for 30 to 60 seconds, then wipe or rinse the plant. After an hour or two, give the plant a thorough rinse with plain water to wash off dead insects and dissolved wax residue. Keep treated plants out of direct light for 24 to 48 hours.

Always test on a small section of the plant a day or two before treating the whole thing. Some plants, particularly those with delicate or waxy leaves, are sensitive to alcohol.

Insecticidal Soap and Neem Oil

Insecticidal soap is one of the most effective treatments for soft-bodied, wax-coated pests. It works three ways: suffocating the insects, disrupting their cell membranes, and stripping the protective wax layer so they dehydrate. The catch is that it only works on contact. There’s no residual effect once the spray dries, so you need to hit the bugs directly. Plan on reapplying every four to seven days until you stop seeing live insects, because eggs and hidden crawlers will keep hatching between treatments.

Neem oil is sometimes combined with insecticidal soap for added effectiveness. It acts as both a contact killer and a feeding deterrent, and it has mild residual activity that soap alone lacks. Pre-mixed formulas containing both are widely available at garden centers. As with alcohol sprays, apply in low light and test a small area first.

When Infestations Are Severe

Alcohol and soap sprays only kill what they touch. They won’t reach mealybugs hiding in the soil, feeding on roots. If you’ve treated a plant multiple times and the bugs keep returning, root-feeding populations are likely the source. Soil-applied systemic insecticides can address this because the plant absorbs the active ingredient through its roots and distributes it through its tissue, killing insects that feed anywhere on the plant. These products are available as granules or soil drenches at most garden centers.

Be realistic about severely infested plants. If a plant is heavily covered in cottony masses, visibly declining, and surrounded by other healthy plants, discarding it may be the smarter move. Badly infested plants require lengthy, repeated treatments and serve as a constant source of reinfestation for everything nearby.

Biological Control for Greenhouses and Gardens

If you’re dealing with mealybugs in a greenhouse or on outdoor plants, beneficial insects can do the heavy lifting. The mealybug destroyer, a small Australian ladybug, is commercially available and lives up to its name. Both the adults and larvae feed voraciously on mealybugs, and females lay their eggs directly inside mealybug egg masses. They perform best at temperatures between 72 and 77°F with humidity around 70 to 80%, and they’re most effective when mealybug populations are high. At low pest densities, they tend to fly off looking for better hunting grounds. One limitation: they only reproduce on mealybug species that produce egg masses, so they won’t establish against longtailed mealybugs.

Green lacewing larvae, sometimes called aphid lions, are another option. They feed on both mealybugs and woolly aphids, and they stay active across a wider temperature range (54 to 95°F), making them more versatile in variable conditions.

Preventing Reinfestation

Nearly every indoor mealybug infestation starts the same way: a new plant brought home from a store, nursery, or friend’s house already carrying hitchhikers. Before adding any new plant to your collection, inspect it carefully. Check the undersides of leaves, the joints where leaves meet stems, and the top layer of soil. Look for the bugs themselves, their cottony egg masses, and any sticky residue on leaves.

Even a clean-looking plant can harbor a few insects that aren’t visible yet. Quarantine every new plant in a separate room for at least three weeks before placing it near your other plants. Inspect it again at the end of that period. Three weeks gives enough time for eggs to hatch and crawlers to become visible. This single habit prevents more infestations than any treatment product on the market.
