What Temperature Kills Cockroach Eggs: Heat vs. Cold

Cockroach eggs die at sustained temperatures above 130°F (55°C) or below 0°F (-18°C), but the key factor is duration. A brief spike of heat or cold won’t penetrate the protective egg case. You need sustained exposure, sometimes for hours or even days, depending on the method.

Why Cockroach Eggs Are Hard to Kill

Cockroaches don’t lay individual eggs. They produce a capsule called an ootheca, which holds dozens of eggs inside a protein-based shell that hardens into a sturdy casing. This shell acts as insulation, shielding the developing embryos from temperature swings, pesticides, and dehydration. It’s the reason a quick blast of hot or cold air rarely works. The temperature has to penetrate the casing and stay there long enough to destroy the embryos inside.

A single ootheca can contain anywhere from 14 to 48 eggs depending on the species. German cockroaches, the most common household species, pack about 30 to 40 eggs per capsule. That means one surviving egg case can restart an infestation.

Heat Thresholds That Kill Eggs

Heat is the more reliable killer. Cockroach eggs begin dying at around 130°F (55°C) when that temperature is held for at least 30 to 60 minutes. At 150°F (65°C), the kill time drops significantly. Professional heat treatments for cockroach infestations typically raise a room to 130–150°F and hold it there for several hours to ensure the heat reaches every crack, crevice, and hidden egg case.

Steam cleaners are a practical household option. A steam cleaner producing vapor at 200°F or higher can kill eggs on contact when the nozzle is held close to the surface for several seconds. The challenge is reaching every spot where oothecae are glued: behind appliances, inside wall voids, under countertops, and along pipe runs. Steam works well for targeted treatment but can’t guarantee you’ve found every egg case in a room.

Clothes dryers set to high heat (typically 135–150°F) can kill eggs in fabric items, bags, or soft goods. Running the dryer for 30 minutes on high provides a sufficient combination of temperature and time.

Cold Thresholds That Kill Eggs

Cold kills cockroach eggs less efficiently than heat because the ootheca’s protein shell provides meaningful insulation against freezing. Ottawa Public Health recommends placing infested appliances or furniture in a garage when the external temperature is 0°F (-18°C) or below and leaving them there for several days. That multi-day exposure is necessary because the interior of an appliance or piece of furniture takes time to reach the lethal temperature throughout.

A standard household freezer set to 0°F can work for smaller items. Place infested objects in sealed bags and leave them in the freezer for at least four to five days. Thinner items like books or electronics casings will reach lethal temperatures faster, while dense or insulated items need longer. Oriental cockroach eggs are notably more cold-tolerant than other species, so if you’re dealing with those larger, darker roaches commonly found in basements and drains, extend the freezing time or use heat instead.

Why Short Exposure Doesn’t Work

The most common mistake is assuming a temperature spike is enough. Placing something in a hot car for an afternoon or setting it outside on a freezing night for a few hours often fails. The ootheca shell slows heat transfer, and the eggs inside may never reach the lethal temperature. Ambient temperature also fluctuates. A winter night that dips to 0°F may warm above freezing by midday, giving the eggs a recovery window.

Consistency matters more than peak temperature. A steady 130°F for two hours is more effective than a brief 170°F followed by cooling. When using cold, uninterrupted sub-zero exposure for multiple days is far more reliable than repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Comparing Methods for Home Use

  • Steam cleaning: Kills eggs on contact at 200°F+. Best for cracks, baseboards, and behind appliances. Limited by your ability to find every egg case.
  • Clothes dryer: Effective for fabric items, bags, and small soft goods. Run on high for 30 minutes minimum.
  • Household freezer: Works for small infested items at 0°F. Requires four to five days of continuous freezing.
  • Outdoor cold: Effective for furniture and appliances when temperatures stay at or below 0°F for several consecutive days.
  • Professional heat treatment: The most thorough option. Heats an entire room to 130–150°F for hours, reaching hidden egg cases that spot treatments miss.

Pesticides and Eggs

Most contact sprays and residual pesticides don’t penetrate the ootheca well enough to kill the eggs inside. They may kill nymphs shortly after hatching if residue remains on the surface, but the eggs themselves often survive. This is one reason cockroach infestations seem to bounce back a few weeks after spraying: a new generation hatches from protected egg cases. Insect growth regulators, which disrupt development rather than killing on contact, are more effective at preventing viable hatches but work slowly.

Temperature-based methods bypass the ootheca’s chemical resistance entirely. Heat and cold destroy eggs through physical means, denaturing proteins or forming ice crystals inside the embryo, regardless of the shell’s impermeability to sprays.

Practical Tips for Temperature Treatment

Before treating any area, check common egg-laying sites. Cockroaches prefer to deposit oothecae in warm, dark, tight spaces near food and water. Behind refrigerators, inside cabinet hinges, under sinks, along the seams of cardboard boxes, and inside electronics are all frequent spots. German cockroaches carry their egg cases until just before hatching, so you may find oothecae still attached to live or dead adults.

If you’re using steam, move the nozzle slowly and hold it within an inch or two of the surface. Quick passes won’t transfer enough heat through the shell. For freezer treatment, double-bag the item to contain any nymphs that hatch during the process, since eggs in early development stages may take longer to die than nearly mature ones. And for any temperature method, combine it with thorough cleaning. Removing food residue, sealing entry points, and reducing moisture eliminates the conditions that attracted cockroaches in the first place, making it far less likely survivors or newcomers will re-establish.
