What Red Ants Live in Ohio and Are They Dangerous?

Ohio is home to several ant species that appear red, reddish-brown, or orange, but true Red Imported Fire Ants are not among them. If you’ve spotted red-colored ants in your Ohio yard or home, you’re almost certainly looking at a native species that’s far less dangerous than the fire ants found in southern states. The most common culprits are Allegheny mound ants, pharaoh ants, acrobat ants, and thief ants, each with distinct habits and varying levels of nuisance.

Fire Ants Are Not Established in Ohio

Red Imported Fire Ants, the aggressive stinging species most people worry about, infest more than 367 million acres across the southern United States, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and parts of California. Ohio is not on that list, and the USDA does not maintain a fire ant quarantine zone in the state. While a stray colony could theoretically arrive on shipped materials like potted plants or soil, established breeding populations have not taken hold in Ohio’s climate.

This is good news. Ohio’s native red-colored ants can bite or spray formic acid, but they don’t deliver the venomous, blister-forming stings that fire ants are known for. If you’ve been stung by something in Ohio and developed painful welts or blisters, the source is more likely a wasp, bee, or a lookalike insect like the red velvet ant (which is actually a wasp, not an ant at all).

Allegheny Mound Ants: Ohio’s Most Visible Red Ant

The Allegheny mound ant is the species most Ohioans are asking about when they search for “red ants.” These ants are roughly a quarter inch long with a reddish-brown head and midsection and a black abdomen. They’re hard to miss, not because of their size, but because of their homes. Allegheny mound ants build massive above-ground dirt mounds that can reach three to four feet tall and several feet across. Some colonies connect multiple mounds through underground tunnels, with the nest extending up to four feet below the surface.

You’ll find these mounds in open, sun-drenched areas: meadows, clearings in oak and pine groves, prairie edges, and sunny lawns. They never build in shade. To keep their nesting sites open, the ants actively kill surrounding vegetation by injecting formic acid into plant stems and roots. If you notice a ring of dead grass or plants around a large dirt mound, Allegheny mound ants are almost certainly responsible.

The mounds themselves are surprisingly engineered. Inside, they contain an intricate network of tunnels and chambers. Fresh mounds often have a two- to three-inch layer of finely chopped twigs on top, which acts as a roof to protect against rain. A single colony can have more than one queen, which is why these colonies can grow so large and persist for years.

Allegheny mound ants don’t sting, but they do bite and can spray formic acid into the wound. This produces a mild burning sensation that fades quickly. They’re defensive around their mounds but generally not aggressive away from the nest.

Smaller Red Ants Found Indoors

If the red ants you’re seeing are tiny and inside your house, two species are the most likely candidates.

Pharaoh ants are extremely small, about 1/16 of an inch, and range from light yellow to reddish-brown with a slightly darker rear section. They thrive indoors and are one of the most common household ant pests in Ohio. Pharaoh ants nest in warm, humid spots like wall voids, behind baseboards, and near kitchen and bathroom plumbing. They’re drawn to grease, sweets, and protein, and they form large colonies that can be difficult to eliminate because they split into new colonies when disturbed.

Thief ants (also called grease ants) are even smaller, sometimes barely visible at 1/32 of an inch. They’re smooth, shiny, and yellowish to bronze. Their name comes from their habit of nesting near other ant colonies and stealing food and larvae. Indoors, they gravitate toward greasy or protein-rich foods. Because they’re so tiny, they can enter food packaging that other ants can’t access.

Other Reddish Species to Know

Acrobat ants are light brownish-yellow, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, and easy to identify by their heart-shaped abdomen. When disturbed, they raise their abdomen over their head, which is where the “acrobat” name comes from. They typically nest in moist or decaying wood outdoors but occasionally move into homes through gaps around utility lines, window frames, or damaged wood. Finding acrobat ants inside can signal a moisture problem or wood decay that’s worth investigating.

Larger yellow ants are pale yellowish-brown, about 3/16 of an inch, and mostly live underground. You’ll rarely see the ants themselves, but you may notice small piles of fine soil pushed up through cracks in basement floors or along foundation walls. They give off a distinct lemon-like smell when crushed. These ants feed on honeydew produced by underground root-feeding insects, not on your food, so they’re more of a cosmetic nuisance than a real pest.

The Red Velvet Ant: Not an Ant at All

If you spot a large, fuzzy, bright orange-red and black insect walking across your lawn, you’re probably looking at a red velvet ant, sometimes called a “cow killer.” Despite the name, this is actually a wasp. Females are wingless and covered in dense velvety hair, which makes them look like oversized ants. They’re about 3/4 of an inch long, much bigger than any common Ohio ant species. Males have wings and look more obviously wasp-like.

Female red velvet ants deliver an extremely painful sting, which earned them the cow killer nickname (though the sting isn’t actually dangerous to livestock or humans beyond the pain). They’re solitary and uncommon enough that encounters are rare. If you see one, simply leave it alone.

Managing Red Ants in Your Yard

For Allegheny mound ants, the main concern is usually the mounds themselves, especially when they appear in lawns, gardens, or near walkways. Because these colonies can extend four feet underground and connect through tunnels, simply flattening a mound does nothing. The ants rebuild within days.

Bait treatments broadcast across the yard are more effective than treating individual mounds. Applied as a granular product spread with a hand-powered spreader, baits work because foraging ants carry the material back to the colony, eventually reaching the queen. The key is applying bait when ants are actively foraging: ground temperatures between 70 and 90°F, dry conditions, and no rain expected for a couple of days. Spring is the single best time to treat if you’re only going to do it once, since ants are foraging aggressively after winter. A second application in midsummer and a third in early fall improve results significantly.

For mounds that need faster results, liquid drenches with a contact insecticide work well. The technique matters: pour about one quarter of the liquid in a ring 10 to 12 inches around the outside of the mound first, which blocks the queen from escaping through underground tunnels. Then soak the mound directly with the rest. Depending on mound size, you’ll need one to two gallons total. The critical rule is not to disturb the mound before treating. If the ants sense a threat, workers may relocate the queen before the treatment reaches her.

Managing Indoor Infestations

Pharaoh ants and thief ants require a different approach than outdoor species. Both are so small they can enter through cracks that seem impossibly narrow, and both form colonies in hidden spots that are hard to locate. For pharaoh ants especially, avoid using spray insecticides. Sprays kill the ants they contact but stress the colony, causing it to “bud,” splitting into multiple new colonies that spread the infestation to other rooms.

Gel or liquid bait stations placed along ant trails are the most reliable indoor method. These baits attract foraging workers, who carry small amounts back to the nest. It takes patience, often two to four weeks, but this approach reaches the queen and the rest of the colony rather than just picking off workers at the surface. Keep counters clean, seal food in airtight containers, and fix any leaking pipes or faucets that provide water sources. Eliminating competing food makes ants more likely to take the bait.
