It consistently outperforms other options in extension recommendations across the southeastern U.S., where this pest has spread aggressively since first appearing in the mid-2000s.
Why Dinotefuran Works Best
Dinotefuran is a systemic insecticide, meaning you don’t spray it on the insects directly. Instead, you mix it with water and pour it into the soil around the base of the tree. The roots absorb the active ingredient, and the tree’s vascular system distributes it throughout the trunk, branches, and bark. When scale insects pierce the bark to feed, they ingest the insecticide and die.
What makes dinotefuran stand out over other systemics like imidacloprid is speed. Dinotefuran is more water-soluble, so it moves through the tree faster and reaches the bark tissue where scale insects live. This matters because crape myrtle bark scale feeds on the trunk and major limbs, areas that thicker, slower-moving systemics may not reach as effectively. When and How to Apply a Soil Drench
Timing is critical. Apply the soil drench in spring as new growth begins, typically when you see the first leaves pushing out. This is when the tree is actively pulling water and nutrients from the soil, which means it will absorb the insecticide efficiently and move it into the canopy and bark.
To apply, mix the product according to label directions and pour the solution evenly around the base of the tree, within the drip line (the area directly beneath the outer edge of the canopy). Water the area lightly beforehand if the soil is dry, so the solution soaks in rather than running off. Most homeowner-grade dinotefuran products are sold as granules or concentrated liquids labeled for soil drench use. One application per season is typically sufficient, though heavily infested trees may benefit from a second treatment the following spring.
Don’t expect instant results. It can take several weeks for the insecticide to fully distribute through a large tree, and dead scale insects will remain stuck to the bark even after they’ve been killed. That said, avoid applying the drench while the tree is in full bloom if you want to be cautious, and never allow the solution to contact nearby flowering ground cover or plants that pollinators actively visit.
Non-Chemical Methods Worth Using
Insecticide alone won’t solve a heavy infestation in one season. Combining chemical treatment with physical removal speeds up the process considerably. A pressure washer or even a strong garden hose can blast scale insects off the bark. This is one of the easiest, cheapest ways to reduce the population immediately, and it also removes the sooty mold that makes infested trees look so unsightly. Pruning out heavily infested branches before treating further reduces the number of insects the tree has to contend with.
Natural predators also play a role. Ladybugs, lacewing larvae, and the twice-stabbed lady beetle all feed on crape myrtle bark scale. Some ladybeetle larvae, particularly from the Scymnus and Cryptolaemus groups, actually look like scale insects themselves. They’re fuzzy and white, and they sit on the bark. The key difference is that these larvae move, while bark scale insects stay put. If you see something white crawling on the bark, leave it alone.

How to Identify Crape Myrtle Bark Scale
Before treating, make sure you’re dealing with the right pest. Crape myrtle bark scale appears as small, white or grayish felt-like bumps on the trunk, branches, and branch crotches. If you crush one, it oozes pink or lavender fluid, which is the clearest diagnostic sign. No other common crape myrtle pest produces that pink liquid when squished.
The other telltale symptom is heavy black sooty mold coating the trunk and branches. This mold grows on the sugary waste (honeydew) that scale insects excrete.
