House mold shows up as fuzzy, slimy, or powdery patches on surfaces, and it comes in nearly every color: black, green, white, gray, brown, orange, pink, or even purple. The specific look depends on the mold species, how old the growth is, what surface it’s feeding on, and how much moisture is present. A single patch of mold can even change color as it matures, so identifying mold by color alone isn’t reliable.
Common Colors and What They Mean
Black or greenish-black mold is what most people picture, but it’s far from the only variety. Green mold is extremely common indoors and often shows up in a spotty, spreading pattern on walls and food. White mold can look like a fuzzy or powdery film across wood, drywall, fabric, or insulation, and it’s easy to overlook because people assume mold has to be dark. Brown and gray molds frequently appear on ceiling tiles, window frames, and anywhere condensation collects.
Pink or orange discoloration in bathrooms is usually a different organism (a yeast or bacterium that feeds on soap residue), but true mold can also take on these tones. Yellow mold sometimes appears on wood in crawl spaces or basements. The key point is that color tells you very little about how dangerous a mold is. A bright green patch and a dark black stain can both cause the same respiratory irritation. The only way to identify a mold species with certainty is laboratory testing.
Textures You’ll See
Texture is often more useful than color for recognizing mold. Here are the most common forms:
- Fuzzy or cottony: A soft, hair-like layer that sits above the surface. This is typical of Penicillium species, which often appear blue-green.
- Slimy or wet-looking: A glossy, slick film usually associated with Stachybotrys (the species people call “black mold”). It thrives on materials high in cellulose like drywall paper, carpet backing, and fiberboard.
- Powdery: A dry, dust-like coating that can look almost like someone sprinkled flour or chalk on a surface. Cladosporium species often grow this way, typically in dark green or brown tones.
- Velvety: A smooth, fabric-like texture with a slight sheen, common with Alternaria species found around windows and in damp bathrooms.
Younger mold growth tends to look powdery or flat, while older colonies become fuzzier, thicker, or even develop a raised, layered appearance. Stachybotrys specifically starts powdery when young, turns slimy during active growth, and can look almost furry when old.
What “Black Mold” Actually Looks Like
When people search for mold, they’re often worried about Stachybotrys chartarum, the species commonly called black mold. Despite the name, it isn’t always strictly black. It typically appears greenish-black, dark gray, or dark brown. The growth pattern is spotty and irregular, with color variations that reflect different ages within the colony. You might see lighter specks mixed into darker areas. Over time, individual spots can merge together until they resemble a large, dark stain.
You’ll often smell Stachybotrys before you see it. It produces a strong musty, earthy odor, and it frequently starts growing inside walls on the paper backing of drywall, where moisture from a leak feeds it long before anything becomes visible. By the time dark patches show through the wall surface, the colony behind it may be well established. Stachybotrys favors materials rich in cellulose: paper, cardboard, carpet, ceiling tiles, wood fiberboard, and caulk or grout.
Several other dark-colored molds look nearly identical to the naked eye, so visual inspection alone cannot confirm Stachybotrys. If you’re concerned, a licensed mold professional can take samples for microscopic identification.
How Mold Looks on Different Surfaces
The same mold species can look different depending on what it’s growing on.
On painted drywall, mold often starts as small clusters of dots, almost like someone flicked a pen at the wall. As it spreads, you’ll see irregular patches with fuzzy edges. If the mold is feeding on the paper layer behind the paint, the wall itself may feel soft or spongy when pressed. Paint may bubble, crack, or peel away as moisture builds underneath.
On wood, mold tends to follow the grain and can appear as dark streaks or blotchy staining. It’s easy to confuse with natural wood darkening or water stains, but mold will have a slightly raised or textured surface if you look closely. Wood in basements, crawl spaces, and attics is especially vulnerable, and mold often grows on the hidden underside of boards where airflow is poor.
In bathroom grout and tile, mold fills the porous grout lines first, showing up as dark spots or a continuous dark line between tiles. Splashback from showers provides constant moisture. On tile surfaces themselves, mold sits on top as a film and wipes off more easily than grout-embedded growth.
On carpet, mold is hardest to spot because it often grows at the base of the fibers or on the underside of the carpet pad. Visible signs include discolored patches, a matted texture, or a persistent musty smell that cleaning doesn’t remove.
Early Signs Before Mold Becomes Obvious
Catching mold early means knowing what to look for before a large colony forms. In its earliest stages, mold may appear as tiny black dots, faint green speckles, small white fuzzy patches, a gray film, or small circular spots. These are easy to dismiss as dirt, dust, or normal wear on a surface.
Other visual clues point to conditions where mold is likely growing out of sight. Brown ceiling stains, bubbling or cracking paint, wallpaper peeling at the edges, warped drywall, and soft spots in walls all indicate trapped moisture, which is the single requirement mold needs to establish itself. Dark rings around old water stains are especially suspicious. Any unexplained discoloration near windows, around air vents, on ceilings, or behind furniture warrants a closer look.
Smell is a reliable early warning system. A persistent musty or earthy odor in a room, even when you can’t see anything, often means mold is growing behind a wall, under flooring, or inside ductwork.
Mold vs. Mildew vs. Mineral Deposits
Not every discoloration on your walls is mold. Two common look-alikes cause confusion.
Mildew is technically a type of mold, but the term usually refers to the thin, flat, gray or white growth you see on shower curtains, damp fabrics, and window sills. It stays on the surface, doesn’t penetrate materials the way other molds do, and is relatively easy to clean. If a patch is flat, powdery, and light-colored on a bathroom surface, it’s likely mildew rather than a deeper mold colony.
Efflorescence is a mineral deposit, not a living organism. It appears as a white or grayish powdery residue on concrete, brick, or stone surfaces, and it happens when water pulls dissolved salts to the surface as it evaporates. It can look a lot like white mold, but there’s a simple test: touch it. Efflorescence crumbles into a dry, crystalline powder. White mold does not. Efflorescence also only appears on masonry and concrete, never on wood, fabric, or drywall.
When Testing Matters
If you can see mold, you generally don’t need to test it before taking action. The response is the same regardless of species: find the moisture source, fix it, and remove the affected material. Testing becomes useful when you smell mold but can’t find it, when you’re experiencing unexplained respiratory symptoms and want to confirm mold as the cause, or when you need documentation for an insurance claim or real estate transaction.
