Professional exterminators primarily use gel baits, insecticidal dusts, and liquid residual sprays to eliminate cockroaches. The specific combination depends on the species, the severity of the infestation, and where the roaches are hiding. What separates a professional treatment from a can of spray you’d buy at the store isn’t just stronger chemicals. It’s a layered approach that uses multiple product types together, each targeting roaches in a different way.

Gel Baits: The Most Effective Tool

Gel baits are the backbone of most professional cockroach treatments. An exterminator applies small dots of gel from a syringe-like applicator into cracks, crevices, cabinet hinges, and other spots where roaches travel and hide. The gel contains a food attractant mixed with a slow-acting insecticide. Roaches eat the bait, return to their harborage, and die. Other roaches then feed on the dead roach or its droppings and are poisoned in turn, creating a chain reaction through the colony.

The most widely used professional gel baits contain an active ingredient called indoxacarb, which blocks sodium channels in the insect’s nervous system, causing paralysis and death. Fipronil and hydramethylnon are other common active ingredients in professional-grade baits. The slow kill time is intentional: it gives the poisoned roach time to spread the toxin to others before dying. Gel baits applied by syringe are generally more versatile and effective than the pre-filled plastic bait stations sold in stores, because the exterminator can place tiny amounts exactly where roach activity is heaviest.

Insecticidal Dusts for Hidden Spaces

For wall voids, electrical outlets, pipe chases, and other enclosed spaces where roaches nest but gel bait can’t easily reach, exterminators use insecticidal dusts. The two most common are boric acid and diatomaceous earth. Both work mechanically rather than through a chemical reaction. Boric acid clings to a roach’s body and is ingested when the insect grooms itself, damaging its digestive system. Diatomaceous earth scratches the waxy outer coating of the roach’s exoskeleton, causing it to dehydrate and die.

Professionals use a hand duster or bulb applicator to puff a very thin layer of dust into cracks and voids. A light dusting is key: if roaches can see a heavy pile of powder, they’ll walk around it. Applied correctly in protected voids, these dusts can remain effective for months or even years, providing long-term residual control that liquid sprays can’t match.

Liquid Sprays and Residual Treatments

Exterminators do use liquid sprays, but not the way most people imagine. Rather than fogging an entire room, professionals apply targeted residual sprays along baseboards, door frames, and entry points where roaches cross. These sprays leave a thin film that kills roaches over days or weeks as they walk across it. Some professional formulations use microencapsulated technology, where tiny capsules of insecticide break open when an insect steps on them, extending the product’s effective life.

This matters because common store-bought sprays are often pyrethroids (bifenthrin, cypermethrin, permethrin), and research from the University of California found that these products killed fewer than 20% of German cockroaches on sprayed surfaces. Even when roaches were confined to the treated area, some products took up to five days to kill them. Frequent use of pyrethroid sprays has also driven widespread resistance in cockroach populations, making them even less effective over time. Professional-grade residual products use different chemical classes and are applied in ways that avoid triggering this resistance cycle.

Insect Growth Regulators

One tool that separates professional treatments from DIY efforts is insect growth regulators, or IGRs. These don’t kill adult roaches directly. Instead, they mimic natural insect hormones that control development. When young roaches are exposed to an IGR like pyriproxyfen, they can’t mature into reproducing adults. The compound also disrupts egg-laying and prevents eggs from hatching. Over time, this collapses the population by cutting off its ability to reproduce, even if a few adults survive the initial treatment.

Exterminators often combine an IGR with gel baits and dusts. The baits and dusts knock down the existing population while the IGR ensures that juveniles and eggs don’t replace the roaches that were killed. This combination is what makes professional treatments effective against entrenched infestations that keep bouncing back after store-bought sprays.

How Treatment Differs by Species

The species of cockroach changes the entire treatment strategy. German cockroaches, the small tan ones commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, prefer warm, dry hiding spots near food and water. They breed quickly, live entirely indoors, and are the hardest to eliminate. Gel baits placed inside cabinets, behind appliances, and along countertop edges are the primary weapon here, supported by dusts in wall voids and IGRs to stop reproduction.

American cockroaches (the large reddish-brown ones sometimes called “water bugs”) typically enter through floor drains and sewer pipes. Treatment focuses on sealing entry points, treating drains, and applying residual sprays and baits in basements, crawl spaces, and utility rooms. Oriental cockroaches prefer cool, damp environments like wet basements, so treatment concentrates in those areas. An exterminator’s first step is always identifying which species is present, because placing gel bait in a basement won’t help much if German roaches are nesting behind the kitchen stove.

The Full IPM Approach

Chemicals are only part of what a good exterminator does. Professional pest control follows an Integrated Pest Management approach that combines chemical treatments with sanitation, exclusion, and monitoring. Before applying anything, a technician inspects to locate harborage areas and identify the species. Sticky traps placed under appliances and along walls reveal “hot spots” of activity.

Then comes exclusion: sealing cracks around cabinets, backsplashes, pipes, and cables with caulk or copper mesh. Rubber drain covers or metal screens go over floor drains. The exterminator may recommend specific sanitation steps, like eliminating grease buildup around stoves, storing food in sealed containers, and fixing leaky pipes that provide water. These steps remove what roaches need to survive, making the chemical treatments far more effective and reducing the chance of reinfestation.

Follow-up visits are standard. The technician re-inspects hiding places, checks sticky traps for activity levels, reapplies bait as needed, and assesses whether the population is declining. A single treatment rarely solves a serious German cockroach infestation. Most professionals schedule at least two or three visits over several weeks.

Safety After Treatment

Gel baits and dusts applied in cracks and voids pose minimal risk to people and pets because they’re placed in areas you don’t normally contact. Liquid spray applications require more caution. You should keep pets and children out of treated areas until sprays have dried completely, or for whatever time period is specified on the product label, whichever is longer. Remove pet food bowls, water dishes, bedding, and toys from any room being treated before the exterminator arrives.

If foggers are used (which is less common in modern professional treatment), all people and animals must leave the home entirely. Fish tanks should be covered, and central heating or air conditioning turned off to prevent airborne pesticide from circulating. Any bait stations placed at floor level should be in secure housings or locations your pets can’t reach, since the food attractants in roach bait can appeal to dogs and cats. Ventilating treated rooms by opening windows during the drying period further reduces exposure.
