The most effective way to kill ants depends on whether you want to eliminate the ones you can see or wipe out the entire colony. Spraying kills workers on contact, but the colony keeps producing replacements. Bait systems work slower but can destroy a colony from the inside out, including the queen. Here’s how each method works and when to use it.

Why Baits Work Better Than Sprays

Most ant colonies contain thousands of workers, and the ones marching across your kitchen counter represent a tiny fraction. Killing those visible ants with a spray feels satisfying but barely dents the colony. Worse, many sprays are repellent, meaning surviving ants simply reroute to a different path and keep foraging.

Baits take the opposite approach. They use a slow-acting toxin mixed with something ants want to eat. Workers carry the bait back to the nest and feed it to other colony members, including the queen. Once the queen dies, the colony collapses. This process takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the product, but it can suppress ant populations by about 90 percent when applied correctly.

The single most important rule with baits: do not spray insecticide near them. Spraying contaminates the bait and repels ants away from the area. You need ants alive and actively feeding so they carry the poison home. It feels counterintuitive to watch ants swarm a bait station without killing them, but that’s exactly how the method works.

Store-Bought Bait Options

Commercial ant baits use different active ingredients that work on different timelines. Some fast-acting baits can control colonies within three days. Others take two to four weeks for maximum effect. A third category uses growth regulators that prevent the colony from reproducing, taking two to six months for full suppression but providing longer-lasting results.

Some products blend a fast-acting ingredient with a growth regulator, giving you quick knockdown plus extended control. These combination baits are a good choice if you’re dealing with a persistent problem and don’t want to reapply frequently.

Baits come in several forms: gel syringes, liquid stations, and granules. Gel and liquid baits work best for sugar-feeding ants (the tiny ones trailing toward sweet spills). Granular baits work better for outdoor species like fire ants, where you can broadcast them across a yard. If you’re not sure what type of ant you have, putting out both a sweet bait and a protein-based bait lets the ants choose, and tells you which formulation to focus on.

A Simple DIY Bait With Boric Acid

You can make an effective liquid ant bait at home with three ingredients: one teaspoon of boric acid powder, three tablespoons of white sugar, and enough warm distilled or bottled water to reach one and three-quarter cups. Stir until everything dissolves completely. Tap water can contain minerals that affect the mixture, so filtered or bottled water works better.

Pour the solution into small containers (condiment cups work well) with a piece of cotton inside for the ants to walk on. Place them wherever you’re seeing ant activity. Check weekly and replace any stations that get moldy. This method can take one to two months to fully eliminate a colony, so patience matters.

Two things will ruin this approach. First, don’t remove whatever food source originally attracted the ants until they’ve started feeding on your bait. If you clean everything up immediately, they may lose interest in the area entirely and never find your bait stations. Second, don’t spray any insecticide near the bait. Even a quick spritz of household ant spray will disturb the colony and make them abandon the bait.

Diatomaceous Earth for Chemical-Free Control

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a powder made from fossilized aquatic organisms. Under a microscope, each particle has sharp edges that scratch through the waxy coating on an ant’s exoskeleton. Once that protective layer is damaged, the ant loses moisture and dies from dehydration. The powder stays effective indefinitely as long as it remains dry.

Apply a thin layer in areas where ants travel: along baseboards, behind appliances, inside wall voids, and around entry points. It won’t work in damp areas or outdoors where rain will wet it. Diatomaceous earth is not toxic if ingested in small amounts, but the fine particles can irritate lungs. Wear a simple dust mask when applying, and let the dust settle before pets or kids re-enter the room.

This method kills individual ants that walk through it but won’t eliminate a colony the way bait does. It’s best used as a barrier to block entry points or as a complement to a baiting strategy.

Cutting Off Entry and Food Sources

No killing method works long-term if your home keeps inviting new colonies in. Ants leave pheromone trails that guide other workers to food, so a single scout that finds crumbs on your counter can recruit hundreds of nestmates within hours.

  • Seal entry points. Inspect cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and foundation walls. Caulk or weather stripping closes most of them.
  • Eliminate food sources. Wipe up spills immediately, store food in airtight containers, and sweep floors daily. Even small grease spots near a stove can sustain a trail.
  • Disrupt pheromone trails. A simple spray of equal parts white vinegar and water wipes out the chemical trail ants follow. Spray it along baseboards and countertops where you’ve seen activity.
  • Manage pet food. Wash pet bowls regularly and pick up uneaten food. A shallow dish of water under the food bowl creates a moat that ants can’t cross.

Keeping Pets and Kids Safe

Enclosed bait stations are the safest option for homes with pets or children. The plastic casing lets ants enter but prevents dogs, cats, and toddlers from reaching the bait inside. Gel baits applied in cracks and crevices behind appliances also stay out of reach.

Some common pesticide ingredients pose real risks to animals. Certain compounds found in flea treatments and insect sprays are extremely toxic to cats even at trace exposure, and others cause neurological symptoms in dogs. Essential oils often marketed as “natural” ant repellents, including tea tree, peppermint, and eucalyptus, are also highly toxic to cats, birds, and fish. Cats lack a specific liver enzyme needed to break down these compounds, making them far more vulnerable than dogs. Symptoms of pesticide exposure in pets include vomiting, drooling, tremors, and difficulty breathing.

Boric acid in commercial bait stations poses minimal risk to pets because the concentration is low and the housing limits access. Concentrated boric acid powder is a different story. If you’re using the DIY sugar-water bait, place stations in spots your pets can’t reach, like inside cabinets, behind heavy appliances, or on high shelves.

Fire Ants and Carpenter Ants Need Different Approaches

Most of the advice above targets common household ants, the small species that invade kitchens and bathrooms. Two types require a more targeted strategy.

Fire ants live outdoors in large mound colonies and rarely invade homes, but they’re aggressive and their stings are painful. Granular bait broadcast across the yard is the standard treatment. For individual mounds, direct nest treatments (drenches or injections) provide faster results. Combining both methods, broadcast bait for the yard plus direct treatment for problem mounds, gives the most complete control.

Carpenter ants are large, typically black, and nest inside damp or decaying wood. Unlike termites, they don’t eat wood but excavate it to build galleries. You’ll often see small piles of sawdust-like shavings near their nesting sites. Killing the workers with spray won’t solve the problem because the colony is inside your walls, deck, or framing. Bait systems designed for carpenter ants can reach the nest, but if the colony is large or you’re seeing structural damage, professional treatment is usually necessary to locate and eliminate the nest directly.

Putting It All Together

For most ant problems, the most effective plan combines three steps: place bait stations along active trails and let ants feed undisturbed, seal entry points with caulk to limit new foragers, and remove food and water sources that attracted them in the first place. Resist the urge to spray. Give baits one to four weeks to work through the colony. If ants return after a month, try switching to a bait with a different food base (protein instead of sugar, or vice versa) since ant dietary preferences shift with the seasons.
