What Are Red Mosquitoes? Midges, Colors, and Bites

If you’ve spotted small red insects that look like mosquitoes, you’re almost certainly seeing chironomid midges, often called non-biting midges. These red, mosquito-shaped flies are one of the most common insects near lakes, rivers, and ponds. They don’t bite, but they’re frequently mistaken for mosquitoes because of their nearly identical body shape. The color red also plays a surprising role in how actual mosquitoes hunt for people to bite.

Red Midges: The Insects You’re Probably Seeing

Chironomid midges belong to a different family than mosquitoes, but the resemblance is striking. Adults are slender, long-legged, and gather in swarms near water, especially around dusk. Some species are distinctly reddish or reddish-brown. Their larvae, known as bloodworms, are bright red and live at the bottom of ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. If you’ve seen tiny red worms in standing water or in a fish tank, those are midge larvae.

Bloodworms get their vivid color from hemoglobin in their body fluid, the same oxygen-carrying molecule found in human blood. This hemoglobin lets them extract oxygen directly from the water, so they can stay on lake bottoms for their entire larval stage without surfacing. Mosquito larvae, by contrast, lack hemoglobin and must constantly travel to the surface to breathe, which is why mosquitoes tend to breed in shallow water while midge larvae thrive in deeper lakes and ponds.

The key difference for you: midges don’t bite. They have no piercing mouthparts and don’t feed on blood. If you’re being swarmed by small red or reddish insects near water but aren’t getting bitten, they’re almost certainly midges.

Allergies From Red Midges and Bloodworms

Although they don’t bite, chironomid midges aren’t entirely harmless. As adults emerge and die, their bodies fragment into tiny particles that become airborne. Inhaling these particles can trigger conjunctivitis, nasal inflammation, and asthma in sensitive people, particularly in communities near large bodies of water. In Japan, chironomid midges are considered one of the most important airborne allergens in asthma. One study found nearly 40% of asthma patients had elevated immune responses specific to chironomid proteins.

The main allergen is the hemoglobin molecule itself, and it persists in both living and dead midges. People who handle bloodworms as aquarium fish food are at particular risk for developing sensitivity. Reactions in these cases can range from hives and nasal symptoms to more serious responses including severe swelling and, rarely, anaphylaxis. If you regularly feed bloodworms to fish and notice itchy skin or respiratory symptoms during handling, that exposure is the likely cause.

Why Mosquitoes Are Attracted to Red

True mosquitoes aren’t red themselves, but the color red is central to how they find you. Research from the University of Washington, published in Nature Communications, showed that the yellow fever mosquito flies toward red, orange, black, and cyan after detecting carbon dioxide from human breath. Without that CO2 trigger, the mosquitoes ignored colored targets entirely. And when CO2 was present, they still ignored green, blue, purple, and white.

This matters because all human skin, regardless of pigmentation, emits a strong signal in the red-orange wavelength range. Mosquitoes essentially use a two-step hunting process: first they smell the CO2 you exhale, and that primes their visual system to scan for long-wavelength colors like red and orange. When researchers filtered out those long wavelengths or covered a person’s hand with a green glove, CO2-primed mosquitoes lost interest. The preference is genetic. Mosquitoes with mutations affecting their ability to smell CO2 showed no color preference at all, and those with mutations affecting long-wavelength vision became effectively color-blind even when CO2 was present.

Using Color to Reduce Mosquito Bites

These findings translate into practical advice. Clothing in red, orange, black, or cyan can make you more visible to mosquitoes that have already picked up your scent. Wearing white, green, blue, or purple may have a deterrent effect by making you harder to spot against your surroundings. Color alone won’t make you invisible to mosquitoes since they also track body heat, moisture, and skin chemicals. But combined with repellent and other precautions, choosing the right clothing color removes one signal from their targeting system.

How to Tell Midges From Mosquitoes

A few quick identifiers can help you figure out which insect you’re dealing with:

  • Resting posture: Midges hold their front legs up and forward when resting, almost like antennae. Mosquitoes tend to tilt their bodies at an angle with their hind legs raised.
  • Mouthparts: Mosquitoes have a visible, needle-like proboscis. Midges have small, non-functional mouthparts that aren’t easy to see.
  • Swarming behavior: Large, dancing clouds of insects near water at dusk are typically midges. Mosquitoes don’t form these dense, hovering swarms.
  • Biting: The simplest test. If you’re surrounded by mosquito-shaped insects and nobody is getting bitten, they’re midges.

Midges are drawn to lights at night, which is why they often gather on porches, around streetlights, and near windows. Reducing outdoor lighting or switching to yellow-toned bulbs can cut down on midge swarms near your home. For actual mosquitoes, wearing lighter-colored clothing and eliminating standing water where they breed remain the most effective strategies.
