Wharf Borers in Your Home: Signs and How to Remove Them

The wharf borer (Nacerdes melanura) is a wood-boring beetle that infests wet, decaying wood. Unlike many wood-destroying insects, it cannot attack sound, dry timber. If you’re finding these beetles in or around your home, they’re a reliable sign that somewhere nearby, wood is staying persistently damp and rotting.

What Wharf Borers Look Like

Adult wharf borers are about half an inch long with a slender, parallel-sided body. Their color ranges from dull yellow to reddish-orange, with a distinctive feature: the tips of the wing covers are deep purple to black. They have long antennae, roughly half the length of their body, which is typical of wood-boring beetles. If you’ve spotted one, that dark-tipped wing pattern is the easiest way to confirm the identification.

The larvae are pale, soft-bodied grubs that grow to slightly over one inch long. You’re unlikely to see them unless you break apart a piece of infested wood, where they tunnel through the decayed interior.

Where They Live and What They Need

Wharf borers got their common name because they were historically found in waterfront structures: wharves, pilings, docks, and other timber constantly exposed to water. But they show up anywhere wood stays wet long enough to rot. In residential settings, that means chronically damp crawlspace timbers, leaking basement walls with wood framing, buried wood in contact with soil, old fence posts, or landscape timbers that have started to decay.

The key requirement is fungal decay. Wharf borer larvae don’t feed on healthy wood. They need wood that fungi have already broken down, which means the wood must be holding significant moisture over a long period. The larvae likely feed on the fungi and decayed wood fibers together, spending about a year tunneling and growing before they pupate. Adults emerge in spring, and notably, adult beetles don’t feed at all. Their only purpose is to mate and lay eggs on more rotting wood.

Signs of an Infestation

Most people discover wharf borers when adult beetles suddenly appear indoors, often in large numbers during spring. They’re attracted to light, so you may find them near windows or light fixtures. Because the adults emerge from wood that’s typically hidden (inside walls, under floors, in crawlspaces), the beetles themselves are often the first visible clue that a moisture problem exists somewhere in the structure.

If you pull apart infested wood, you’ll find it riddled with tunnels packed with coarse, grainy frass (boring dust). The wood itself will be visibly decayed, soft, and waterlogged. The structural damage you see is a combination of the rot itself and the larval tunneling, which accelerates the wood’s breakdown.

Are They Harmful to People?

Wharf borers are not dangerous to humans. They don’t bite, sting, or carry disease. The adults are a nuisance when they swarm indoors, but they die within days since they don’t eat. The real concern is what their presence tells you: that structural wood somewhere in your home is saturated with moisture and actively decaying. That’s a more serious problem than the beetles themselves.

How to Get Rid of Them

Pesticides are not an effective solution for wharf borers, and spraying adult beetles only addresses the symptom. The insects depend entirely on wet, rotting wood, so eliminating the moisture source is the only lasting fix. Without damp, decayed wood to lay eggs in, wharf borers simply cannot reproduce in your home.

Start by finding the source of moisture. Common culprits include plumbing leaks behind walls, poor drainage around the foundation, inadequate crawlspace ventilation, or soil graded to direct water toward the house. In many cases, the infested wood has been wet for years before beetles appear, so the moisture problem may be well established.

Once you’ve stopped the water intrusion, any wood that has decayed enough to support wharf borer larvae needs to be replaced. Rotted structural timbers are already compromised, and drying them out won’t restore their strength. Replace damaged wood with pressure-treated lumber or materials rated for ground contact if the location will remain exposed to moisture. Improving ventilation in crawlspaces and ensuring proper drainage away from the foundation will prevent conditions from recurring.

If adult beetles are swarming indoors, you can vacuum them up or wait them out. They’ll die within a few days on their own. The emergence typically lasts a few weeks in spring. If you address the underlying wood decay before the next breeding cycle, the problem won’t repeat.
