A wasp nest is a paper-like structure built from chewed wood fibers mixed with saliva, and it can range from a small open comb the size of your palm to an enclosed, multi-layered colony housing thousands of insects. What you’re looking at, where it’s located, and what time of year it is all determine whether it’s a problem and what to do about it.
How to Identify the Type of Nest
The nest’s shape and location tell you which wasp species built it, and that matters because different species pose very different levels of risk.
Paper wasp nests are the most recognizable. They’re a single layer of open, downward-facing cells that resemble a small umbrella, usually no bigger than a few inches across. You’ll find them under horizontal surfaces: porch ceilings, deck railings, eaves, fence rails, and tree limbs. European paper wasps also nest inside small cavities like hollow furniture posts, light fixtures, and outdoor appliances. Paper wasp colonies are relatively small, typically a few dozen wasps at peak size.
Yellowjacket nests look completely different. They consist of multiple round combs stacked in tiers, all enclosed in a papery outer shell. Most yellowjacket nests are underground, built inside abandoned rodent burrows, but they also appear in wall voids, attics, and occasionally hanging from eaves or tree branches. These colonies grow much larger, sometimes reaching several thousand workers by late summer. Because many nests are hidden underground or inside walls, you may only notice them when wasps stream in and out of a small hole.
Hornet nests are large enclosed structures, often football-shaped or bigger, typically hanging from tree branches or under overhangs. Bald-faced hornets build the most conspicuous aerial nests, which can grow to the size of a basketball.
Mud dauber nests stand apart from the rest. They’re built from mud rather than paper, appearing as small cylindrical tubes or clustered lumps of dried clay on walls, ceilings, and sheltered surfaces. Mud daubers are solitary wasps and rarely sting, so their nests are more of a cosmetic nuisance than a safety concern.
How Wasps Build a Nest
Every nest starts with a single fertilized queen in spring. After emerging from hibernation, she finds a dark, dry, sheltered spot and begins scraping wood fibers from fences, decks, or tree bark. She chews these fibers and mixes them with her saliva to create a pulp that dries into a lightweight, surprisingly strong paper material. The queen builds a small initial comb, lays her first eggs, and raises the first batch of workers herself.
Once five to seven workers hatch and mature, the queen stops leaving the nest entirely and focuses on laying eggs for the rest of her life. From this point, the nest grows rapidly. Workers continue adding layers of comb underneath the existing structure, so the nest expands downward. By midsummer, a healthy yellowjacket or hornet colony can be adding new cells daily, and the population climbs steadily into late summer and early autumn.
The Seasonal Life Cycle
Wasp nests follow a predictable annual cycle in temperate climates. Queens emerge in spring, build through summer, and the colony peaks in late summer or early fall. In autumn, the nest shifts its purpose: instead of producing workers, it produces males and new queens that leave to mate. The new queens then find protected spots to hibernate through winter. The original nest, along with the old queen and all remaining workers, dies off in late autumn.
This means wasp nests are only used for one season. A nest you find in winter or early spring is almost certainly dead. Wasps do not reuse old nests the following year, though a new queen may build a fresh nest nearby if the location is attractive. In rare cases, nests in mild climates can survive winter, but this is the exception.
How to Tell If a Nest Is Active
The simplest test is to watch it. Stand at a safe distance for five to ten minutes during warm daylight hours. An active nest will have wasps visibly entering and leaving. If it’s warm enough for other insects to be flying around and you see no wasp traffic at the nest, it’s likely abandoned.
Time of year matters. If you find a nest during cold winter months, it’s almost certainly empty. You can also look for physical clues: an abandoned nest often looks weathered, with holes or damage from birds and other animals. Active nests look intact and fresh. The papery exterior will appear clean and uniform rather than tattered. If you get close to an active yellowjacket or hornet nest and disturb it, you’ll know immediately. Hundreds of agitated wasps will emerge within seconds.
Removing a Small Nest Yourself
Small, visible paper wasp nests with a few dozen wasps are the only type you should consider removing on your own. The key is timing: treat the nest at dusk or dawn, when wasps are least active and the entire colony is clustered inside. During the day, foraging workers are out and will return to find you standing next to their destroyed home.
Wear long sleeves, thick pants, gloves, and a hat. Aerosol wasp sprays sold at hardware stores typically have a range of 3 to 4 meters, so you can stand roughly 2 meters back and saturate the nest using a sweeping motion. Aim for the nest entrance and the comb itself. After spraying, leave the area and wait at least 24 hours before removing the nest to make sure no surviving wasps remain.
Avoid using a flashlight directly on the nest at night, as wasps will fly toward the light source. If you must use light, place it off to the side rather than holding it near your body.
When Professional Removal Is Necessary
Certain nest situations are genuinely dangerous to handle without experience. Underground yellowjacket nests are the most common example. The colony is hidden, the entrance is a small hole in the ground, and there’s no way to see how large the nest is or ensure the spray reaches the entire structure. Wall void nests pose a similar problem: the colony is sealed behind siding or masonry, and spraying the entrance hole may only anger the wasps without eliminating the nest. Large aerial hornet nests, especially those high in trees or on upper stories of buildings, add the risk of working on a ladder while being stung.
If you’re dealing with any of these situations, or if the nest is larger than a grapefruit and you’re uncertain about the species, a pest control professional can identify the colony and treat it safely. For underground nests, one low-tech approach professionals sometimes use is filling the burrow entrance with fine, dry sand after dark, though insecticide treatment is more reliable for complete elimination.
Sting Risks Worth Knowing
Most wasp stings cause localized pain, swelling, and redness that resolves within a day or two. Systemic allergic reactions, where the body overreacts beyond the sting site, occur in roughly 3 percent of adults and 1 percent of children. If you’ve had a large local reaction to a sting in the past (swelling that extended well beyond the sting site), your risk of a systemic reaction to future stings is 5 to 10 percent.
For people who’ve already had a systemic reaction, the odds of it happening again are significant. Adults with severe previous reactions face up to a 70 percent chance of another systemic reaction if stung again. This is why knowing what you’re dealing with before approaching a nest matters. Yellowjackets and hornets are more aggressive defenders than paper wasps, and disturbing their nests can trigger dozens or hundreds of stings in seconds.
Preventing Nests From Forming
Queens choose nest sites in spring based on shelter, dryness, and protection from wind. Sealing entry points is the most effective prevention. Check for gaps around soffits, eaves, vents, and where utility lines enter your home. Caulk or screen any openings before spring arrives.
Regularly inspecting sheltered areas in April and May lets you catch nests when they’re tiny, often just a queen and a few cells. At that stage, removal is simple and low-risk since there are no workers to defend the nest yet. Some people spray corners of decks, porches, and balconies with a light coating of WD-40 in spring, which creates a slippery surface that discourages nest attachment. Fake wasp nest decoys are widely sold, based on the idea that some species avoid nesting near existing colonies, though their effectiveness is debated.
Yellowjacket traps baited with protein (a small piece of meat works well) can reduce the number of foraging wasps around outdoor eating areas in summer, though they won’t eliminate an established colony. Place traps at the perimeter of your yard rather than near the area you’re trying to protect, so you draw wasps away rather than attracting them closer.
