Those tiny flies hovering over your lawn are most likely fungus gnats, non-biting midges, or shore flies, all of which breed in moist grass and decaying organic matter. The good news: the vast majority of small flies found in lawns don’t bite, don’t spread disease, and pose no risk to you or your pets. The adults are almost always harmless nuisances. The real concern, when there is one, comes from their larvae feeding on grass roots and shoots beneath the soil surface.
Which Flies You’re Probably Seeing
Several species of tiny flies thrive in lawn environments, and they look similar enough that telling them apart takes a closer look. The most common culprits are fungus gnats, non-biting midges, and shore flies.
Fungus gnats are dark, delicate flies roughly 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, with slender legs and segmented antennae that are longer than their heads. They look like tiny mosquitoes but are weak fliers. You’ll notice them running across the soil surface or hovering just above damp grass, mulch, or compost. Their wings are light gray to clear.
Non-biting midges also resemble mosquitoes and tend to form visible swarms over lawns, especially near water or in the evening. They don’t bite and can’t transmit disease. Their swarms can be startling, but they’re completely harmless.
Shore flies are slightly more robust than fungus gnats, with short, bristle-like antennae instead of long segmented ones. They’re attracted to algae and decomposing organic matter, so they tend to cluster in the dampest, shadiest parts of a lawn.
A less common but more destructive possibility is crane flies, sometimes called “mosquito hawks.” Adults are about an inch long with two visible wings and don’t feed at all. Their larvae, called leatherjackets, are gray, legless maggots that can reach 1 to 1.5 inches and cause serious lawn damage.
Are They Harmful to People or Pets?
Most tiny lawn flies are non-biting and present no health risk. They cannot vector pathogens or cause disease. The annoyance comes entirely from their numbers, especially when swarms form during warm, humid evenings.
A small number of biting midge species (sometimes called no-see-ums, sand flies, or punkies) do bite humans and can potentially spread disease, but they’re not the flies you typically see hovering over grass in large groups. If you’re getting bitten while mowing or walking through your lawn, biting midges or other pests like fleas are more likely suspects than the swarms you’re seeing above the turf.
When Larvae Damage Your Lawn
Adult flies don’t harm grass. The damage, when it occurs, comes from larvae living in the soil. Fungus gnat larvae feed on fungi, decaying plant material, and sometimes plant roots in the top layer of soil. In a lawn setting, their impact is usually minor unless populations explode in consistently waterlogged turf.
Crane fly larvae are a different story. Leatherjackets feed on turfgrass shoots, crowns, and roots, and the damage shows up as thinning grass starting in February that can progress to complete turf loss by April or May, particularly in wet, low-lying areas. In extreme cases, leatherjacket populations can destroy an entire lawn. Birds, skunks, and raccoons will dig up infested areas to eat the larvae, tearing up turf even further.
If your lawn is thinning in patches and you’re also seeing lots of small flies, it’s worth pulling back a section of turf to check for larvae. Fungus gnat larvae are tiny, translucent, and worm-like. Leatherjackets are much larger (up to 1.5 inches), gray, and have no visible head or legs.
Why Your Lawn Attracts Them
Moisture is the single biggest factor. Overwatering, poor drainage, and compacted soil all create the damp conditions that tiny flies need to breed. If your lawn stays wet for long stretches, you’re essentially running a nursery for fungus gnats and midges.
Thatch buildup makes the problem worse. Thatch is the layer of dead stems, shoots, and roots that accumulates between the green grass blades and the soil surface. About 25 percent of thatch is lignin, a compound that resists microbial breakdown. When thatch gets thick, it holds excess water during rainy periods, reduces oxygen to grass roots, and creates a perfect breeding habitat for insects and disease-causing organisms. Acidic soils (pH 5.5 or lower) slow thatch decomposition further because they suppress the microorganisms that would normally break it down. Compacted or poorly structured soils have the same effect.
Shady areas with poor air circulation tend to dry out slowly and accumulate more organic debris, which is why you’ll often see the densest clouds of tiny flies in the dampest corners of your yard.
How to Reduce Fly Populations
Since moisture and organic debris drive these infestations, cultural practices are your most effective tools.
- Adjust your watering. Let the top layer of soil dry out between waterings. Avoid creating puddles or runoff, and water in the morning so the lawn surface dries during the day. Allowing turf to dry slightly during peak flight periods (late May through early June in many regions) can meaningfully reduce breeding.
- Dethatch. If your thatch layer is more than half an inch thick, use a dethatching or vertical-slicing machine (available at most equipment rental stores) to remove it. Set the blades just deep enough to catch the soil surface. This removes the spongy layer where larvae thrive and brings soil microbes to the surface to break down remaining organic matter.
- Core aerate. Aeration punches small holes through compacted soil, improving drainage, air movement, and microbial activity. It’s one of the most effective long-term strategies for reducing both thatch buildup and the damp conditions flies need.
- Mow at the right height. Cool-season grasses should be kept at 3 inches or higher; warm-season grasses at 1 to 2 inches. Never remove more than one-third of the blade at a time, and keep mower blades sharp. Healthy, vigorous turf can tolerate moderate insect feeding without visible damage.
- Top-dress with thin layers of topsoil. This introduces thatch-degrading microbes and gives them habitat to work, gradually reducing the organic layer where flies breed.
Biological Controls for Severe Infestations
If cultural changes aren’t enough, or if you’re dealing with visible lawn damage from larvae, beneficial nematodes offer a targeted biological solution. These are microscopic roundworms you mix with water and spray onto the lawn, where they seek out and kill insect larvae in the soil.
Different nematode species target different pests. For crane fly larvae (leatherjackets), the species typically recommended is Steinernema carpocapsae. For grubs from beetles like Japanese beetles or June beetles, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is the standard choice. These nematodes also work against caterpillars and cutworms in turf. They’re safe for people, pets, and beneficial insects, and they’re widely available online or at garden centers.
Timing matters: nematodes need moist soil and moderate temperatures to be effective. Apply them in the morning or evening, water the lawn before and after application, and follow the specific timing recommendations on the product label, which vary by target pest and region. For leatherjackets, fall applications are typically most effective because the larvae are small and vulnerable.
