Tick season in Ohio runs roughly from early spring through late fall, with the highest risk between April and September. Ticks can be active any time the ground temperature climbs above 45°F, which means warm spells in late winter or early spring can bring them out earlier than expected. Ohio is home to three main tick species that bite people and pets, and the state has seen rising cases of tick-borne illness in recent years, with Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever being the most commonly reported.
When Ticks Are Most Active in Ohio
There’s no single “start date” for tick season in Ohio because activity depends on temperature rather than the calendar. Ticks become active when ground temperatures rise above 45°F, and they stay active until sustained freezing weather returns. In practice, that means you could encounter ticks as early as March during a mild stretch and as late as November or even December if fall stays warm.
Peak activity falls between April and August. During these months, both adult ticks and their tiny nymphal stage (roughly the size of a poppy seed) are actively searching for hosts. Nymphs are responsible for a large share of disease transmission because they’re so small that people rarely notice them before they’ve had time to feed. By mid to late summer, activity begins tapering for some species, but blacklegged ticks have a second active window in fall, staying active well into October and November as long as temperatures cooperate.
Three Tick Species to Know
The Ohio Department of Health identifies three species most likely to bite people:
- American dog tick: The most commonly encountered tick in Ohio. It prefers grassy fields, meadows, and open areas with little tree cover. This is the tick you’re most likely to pick up walking through tall grass, along trail edges, or in your own yard if it borders unmowed fields.
- Blacklegged tick (deer tick): Found in wooded and brushy areas. This is the primary carrier of Lyme disease in Ohio and the one health officials are most concerned about. Its population has expanded significantly across the state over the past two decades.
- Lone star tick: Lives in woodlands with thick undergrowth. Recognizable by the single white dot on the back of adult females. This species is aggressive and will actively move toward a host rather than just waiting on vegetation. Lone star tick bites have been linked to alpha-gal syndrome, a condition that causes allergic reactions to red meat.
The Asian Longhorned Tick
A newer arrival is spreading across the state. As of mid-2026, the Asian longhorned tick has established populations in at least 17 Ohio counties, concentrated in the southeastern and central parts of the state, including Athens, Franklin, Hocking, Coshocton, and Ross counties. Another 11 counties have reported smaller numbers. This tick is unusual because a single female can reproduce without mating, meaning populations can explode quickly. It primarily feeds on livestock and wildlife but will bite people. While it hasn’t been confirmed as a major disease vector in the U.S. yet, its rapid spread is being closely monitored.
Tick-Borne Diseases in Ohio
Lyme disease is the biggest concern. Ohio reported 1,687 cases through late August 2026 alone, a figure that reflects a significant upward trend compared to historical averages. Lyme disease is transmitted by blacklegged ticks and typically requires the tick to be attached for 36 hours or more before the bacteria transfers. That’s why finding and removing ticks quickly is so effective at preventing infection.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever is the other commonly reported tick-borne illness in the state, transmitted primarily by the American dog tick. It tends to be more immediately dangerous than Lyme disease, causing high fever, headache, and a characteristic spotted rash that usually appears a few days after symptoms begin.
Other diseases on the rise in Ohio include anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis. Rarer possibilities include tularemia, southern tick-associated rash illness, and Powassan virus. Alpha-gal syndrome, the red meat allergy triggered by lone star tick bites, has also been increasingly recognized across the state.
What Early Lyme Disease Looks Like
The most recognizable sign is an expanding red rash at the bite site, which typically appears 3 to 10 days after the bite but can take up to 30 days. The rash is usually round or oval, often 6 to 8 inches across, and grows larger over days or weeks. It’s generally uniformly red, not the classic “bull’s eye” pattern most people picture. It’s only mildly tender and barely itchy, which is one reason people often mistake it for a spider bite.
Not everyone develops a rash. Some people experience fever, severe fatigue, headache, muscle pain, or joint swelling without any visible skin changes. Lyme disease does not cause a runny nose or cough, so if your symptoms look more like a cold, that’s likely something else. If you develop an expanding rash or unexplained flu-like symptoms within 30 days of a tick bite (or within 30 days of spending time in tick habitat, even if you didn’t notice a bite), that warrants prompt medical attention.
How to Prevent Tick Bites
Effective tick prevention comes down to two strategies: repellents and body checks.
For exposed skin, products containing DEET are the most effective option. Concentrations up to 30% are appropriate for adults and children over two months old. Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are alternatives that perform comparably to about 10% DEET. Apply repellent only to exposed skin, avoid cuts or irritated areas, and don’t spray it directly on your face. For children, apply repellent to your own hands first and then rub it onto the child’s skin, keeping it away from their hands, eyes, and mouth. You don’t need to drench yourself; a light, even coating works.
For clothing, permethrin is the gold standard. It kills ticks on contact and remains effective through several washes. Permethrin should never go directly on skin. Spray it onto pants, socks, shoes, and shirts, then let everything dry completely before wearing. You can also buy pre-treated clothing. Tucking pants into socks looks silly but genuinely works, especially in tall grass or brushy areas where ticks climb upward from ground level.
After spending time outdoors, do a full-body tick check. Pay close attention to the scalp, behind the ears, the armpits, the waistband, the groin, and behind the knees. Ticks like warm, hidden spots. Showering within two hours of coming indoors helps wash off unattached ticks and gives you a natural opportunity to check your skin. Toss your clothes in the dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill any hitchhikers.
How to Remove a Tick Properly
Use fine-pointed tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible, right at the mouthparts, and pull steadily upward without twisting. Don’t jerk or yank, which can tear the mouthparts off and leave them in the skin. If that does happen, don’t panic. Embedded mouthparts alone don’t transmit Lyme disease. Never squeeze the tick’s body, which can force infected fluids into the bite wound.
After removal, wash the bite site and your hands with soap and water, then apply rubbing alcohol or antiseptic. Save the tick in a sealed bag or container if you can. Identifying the species helps determine your risk: preventive antibiotics are only recommended after blacklegged tick bites, not bites from other species. Watch the bite site for 30 days for any expanding rash, and pay attention to unexplained fever, fatigue, or body aches during that window.
Where in Ohio Risk Is Highest
Blacklegged tick populations are densest in the eastern and southern parts of the state, particularly in heavily wooded counties. The expanding range of the Asian longhorned tick mirrors this pattern, with established populations concentrated from the Appalachian foothills through central Ohio. But American dog ticks are found statewide in any grassy or semi-rural setting, including suburban yards that border fields or woods.
You don’t have to be deep in the forest to encounter ticks. Yard edges where lawn meets tall grass or brush, walking trails through parks, and even well-maintained campgrounds are common exposure sites. If you live in or visit any of Ohio’s rural or semi-rural areas between April and October, tick prevention should be part of your routine.
