Texas Rats: Common Species, Health Risks, and Control

Texas is home to several rat species, from invasive urban pests to native field-dwelling rodents. The two you’re most likely to encounter around homes and buildings are the Norway rat and the roof rat, both introduced species that thrive in cities across the state. A third species, the hispid cotton rat, is native to Texas and lives primarily in grasslands and rural areas. Understanding which rat you’re dealing with helps you figure out where it’s nesting, what drew it in, and how to address the problem.

Norway Rats

The Norway rat is the largest and most robust of the common Texas rats. It has brownish to grayish fur and a hairless tail that’s noticeably shorter than its body. These rats are ground dwellers. They dig burrows along foundations, under concrete slabs, in gardens, and near garbage areas. You’ll find them at ground level or below it, rarely climbing higher than a basement or first floor.

Norway rats are strong swimmers and tend to follow water sources like storm drains and sewer lines into neighborhoods. They prefer to eat protein-rich foods and scraps, and they need a reliable water source nearby. If you’re finding gnaw marks on lower walls, greasy rub marks along baseboards, or burrow entrances near your home’s foundation, a Norway rat is the most likely culprit.

Roof Rats

Roof rats are sleeker and more agile than Norway rats. Their fur is similar in color, brownish to grayish, but the key difference is the tail: a roof rat’s tail is longer than its body. That extra length helps with balance as these rats climb trees, power lines, and fences to access upper stories of buildings.

True to their name, roof rats prefer elevated spaces. They nest in attics, ceiling voids, palm trees, dense ivy, and the upper canopy of overgrown landscaping. In Texas cities, they’re especially common in older neighborhoods with mature trees that overhang rooflines. If you hear scratching or movement above your ceiling at night, or find droppings in your attic, you’re likely dealing with roof rats rather than Norway rats.

Hispid Cotton Rats

The hispid cotton rat is a native Texas species that rarely enters homes but is extremely common in rural and suburban areas with tall grass. It’s a moderately large rat, weighing 80 to 150 grams, with coarse, grizzled brown fur and stiff guard hairs that give it a rough (hispid) appearance. Its tail is shorter than its body, sparsely haired, with visible scales.

Cotton rats thrive in tall-grass habitats like bluestem prairies, cordgrass marshes, unmowed road shoulders, old fields, and weedy stream banks. They build a network of runways, about 5 to 8 centimeters wide, through the grass canopy and nest either underground in simple burrows or above ground in dense clumps of vegetation. Their nests are globe-shaped, roughly 12 centimeters across, and made of shredded grass and weeds. In western Texas, where grass is sparse, they den at the bases of low mesquite clumps.

Cotton rats are primarily nocturnal but can be active during the day. They eat mostly grasses and seeds, supplemented by insects and occasionally eggs from ground-nesting birds. Unlike some rodents, they don’t store food for winter. Instead, they build up body fat through spring and summer to carry them through colder months. If you’re seeing rat-like activity in an overgrown yard, pasture, or field rather than inside a structure, cotton rats are a strong possibility.

Where Rats Are Most Common in Texas

Urban rat problems are widespread across Texas’s major metro areas. Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio all deal with significant rat populations, particularly in older neighborhoods, areas with dense tree cover, and properties near restaurants, dumpsters, or construction sites. Code violations like tall weeds, accumulated trash, and debris piles directly contribute to rat problems by providing shelter and food sources.

Several factors make Texas especially hospitable to rats. The warm climate means rats can breed year-round rather than slowing down in winter. Rapid urban development pushes rat populations from cleared land into surrounding neighborhoods. And the state’s mix of older housing stock with gaps in eaves, foundations, and rooflines gives rats easy entry points. In Austin, city code requires landlords to keep rentals free from rodent infestations, a rule that reflects how common the problem is.

Health Risks From Texas Rats

Rats in Texas can transmit several diseases, but the most significant is flea-borne typhus (also called murine typhus). Texas reports the highest number of flea-borne typhus cases of any state in the U.S., and the numbers have been climbing sharply. Between 2008 and 2025, over 8,600 cases were reported statewide. Annual case counts ranged from a low of 135 in 2010 to a high of 1,110 in 2025, showing a dramatic upward trend. About 72% of those cases required hospitalization, and 17 deaths were attributed to the disease during that period.

You don’t catch typhus from a rat directly. Infected fleas carried by rats (and also by opossums, cats, and dogs) transmit the bacteria. When an infected flea bites, it defecates at the bite site. The bacteria enter your body through the bite wound or when you scratch it. Less commonly, people inhale dried flea feces and become infected that way. The disease historically concentrated in South Texas, from the Nueces County area south to the Rio Grande Valley, but new hotspots have emerged in Dallas-Fort Worth, Greater Houston, the San Antonio area, and Austin over the past two decades.

Beyond typhus, rats in Texas can also spread salmonella, leptospirosis, and rat-bite fever. These risks apply primarily to the urban pest species, Norway and roof rats, because they live in close contact with people, contaminate food storage areas with droppings and urine, and carry flea populations into and around homes.

Telling Rat Species Apart

The simplest way to identify which rat you’re dealing with is to compare the tail to the body:

  • Norway rat: Tail shorter than the body, stocky build, found at ground level or below
  • Roof rat: Tail longer than the body, slender build, found in elevated spaces like attics and trees
  • Cotton rat: Tail shorter than the body, coarse grizzled fur, found in grasslands and overgrown fields rather than buildings

Location matters as much as appearance. Droppings in the attic point to roof rats. Burrows along the foundation suggest Norway rats. Runways through tall grass in the yard, with no signs of activity indoors, likely mean cotton rats.

Reducing Rat Activity Around Your Property

Eliminating food, water, and shelter is the foundation of rat control regardless of species. Keep garbage in tightly sealed containers. Pick up fallen fruit from trees. Store pet food indoors. Fix leaking faucets and hose bibs that give rats a water source.

For roof rats specifically, trim tree branches back at least three feet from the roofline and clear dense ivy or vegetation that climbs exterior walls. Seal gaps around eaves, roof vents, and utility line entry points. Roof rats can squeeze through openings the size of a quarter. For Norway rats, close gaps in foundations, seal around pipe penetrations, and eliminate ground-level harborage like woodpiles and debris stacked against the house.

Keeping grass mowed and clearing brush piles reduces cotton rat habitat near your home and, just as importantly, reduces the flea populations that carry typhus. Given that flea-borne typhus cases in Texas have increased eightfold in the past 15 years, flea control on pets and around the property is a meaningful layer of protection. Treating dogs and cats with veterinary flea prevention removes one of the key bridges that brings rat fleas into contact with people.
