Subterranean termite swarmers are the winged, reproductive members of a termite colony. Their job is to leave the nest, pair up, and start new colonies. If you’re seeing them, especially indoors, you’re looking at a sign that a mature termite colony is nearby. How concerned you should be depends on where and how many you’re finding.
What Swarmers Are and Why They Appear
A subterranean termite colony becomes mature enough to produce swarmers after about two to four years. At that point, the colony generates winged reproductives, called alates, whose sole purpose is to fly out, find a mate, and establish a brand-new colony somewhere else. This is the termite equivalent of reproduction at the colony level, spreading the species to new locations.
Swarms typically happen during the daytime, most often in spring, and frequently right after a rainstorm. Warm, humid conditions seem to be the trigger. You’ll often see them near windows or light sources because swarmers are attracted to light. The event itself is brief. Swarmers live for about a day after emerging, and most never successfully start a colony. Once a pair does mate and burrow into soil, they become the king and queen of a new colony. Unlike honeybees and ants, termite colonies keep both a king and queen for the life of the colony. A queen can produce 5,000 to 10,000 eggs per year, but it takes up to a decade before that new colony is mature enough to produce its own swarmers.
How to Tell Swarmers From Flying Ants
Flying ants swarm around the same time of year, and the two are easy to confuse at a glance. Three physical features separate them clearly:
- Wings: Termite swarmers have two pairs of wings that are equal in length. Flying ants have two pairs of unequal length, with the front wings noticeably longer.
- Waist: Termites have a thick, straight waist with no pinch between the thorax and abdomen. Ants have a distinctly narrow, pinched waist.
- Antennae: Termite antennae are straight or gently curved. Ant antennae are sharply elbowed.
If you find dead insects on a windowsill or near a light fixture, pick one up and look at the wings and waist. That’s usually enough to make a confident identification. You may also find just the wings themselves, since swarmers shed their wings shortly after landing.
What Indoor Swarmers Mean for Your Home
Where you find swarmers matters more than the simple fact that you found them. Swarmers emerging from a stump, log, or woodpile that’s 25 feet or more from your home’s foundation are rarely a concern. Termites belong in that environment, breaking down dead wood in the soil. That’s their ecological role.
Swarmers emerging outdoors but close to your foundation are more ambiguous. It may or may not mean the building is infested, but it warrants a professional inspection. Swarmers emerging inside your home, or piles of dead swarmers and shed wings on floors and windowsills, are the clearest warning sign. Finding them indoors almost always indicates an active infestation somewhere in or directly under the structure.
The number matters too. A few swarmers that wandered in through a gap aren’t the same as dozens or hundreds emerging from baseboards or walls. Large numbers of swarmers emerging inside a building indicate a large colony actively feeding on that structure. The number of swarmers a colony produces is proportional to the colony’s age and size, so heavy indoor swarming points to a well-established problem.
No Need to Panic, but Don’t Ignore It
Swarmers themselves are harmless. They can’t bite, they don’t eat wood, and they die within a day. You can sweep them up or vacuum them. The concern isn’t the swarmers. It’s the colony that produced them, which may include thousands of worker termites silently consuming wood inside your walls or foundation.
That said, termites damage wood slowly. Taking a few extra days or even weeks to research your options and choose a pest control company won’t make a meaningful difference in the damage. Collect a few of the swarmers (or their wings) in a plastic bag so a professional can confirm the species, then start getting inspections and estimates without feeling rushed into a decision.
How Subterranean Termite Infestations Are Treated
Two main approaches exist for subterranean termite control: liquid soil barriers and bait systems. Many homes end up with a combination of both.
Liquid Soil Treatments
The traditional method involves applying a liquid termiticide into the soil around and beneath a building’s foundation. This creates a chemical barrier that kills termites trying to pass through it. Modern products are non-repellent, meaning termites can’t detect the treated soil and avoid it. They walk through it, pick up the chemical, and carry it back to the colony. This approach requires injecting large volumes of product around the full perimeter of the home, including drilling through concrete porches and patios in some cases. It’s effective but invasive.
Bait Systems
Bait stations take a different approach. Small stations containing cellulose (essentially processed wood) laced with a slow-acting growth disruptor are installed in the ground around the building’s perimeter, typically 10 to 15 feet apart and about one to two feet from the foundation. Termites find the bait while foraging, feed on it, and share it with nestmates. The active ingredient disrupts molting, so termites die within weeks of consuming it. The colony declines gradually as more workers are exposed.
Additional stations are often placed near known problem areas like woodpiles, stumps, or spots with previous termite damage. Some systems can also be mounted indoors directly over active termite tunnels. On some properties, baits are the sole treatment. On others, they supplement a partial liquid barrier where full perimeter treatment isn’t practical.
Where Subterranean Termites Live
Subterranean termites establish colonies in the soil, typically below the frost line. Their soft exoskeletons make them extremely sensitive to temperature swings and moisture loss, which is why they stay underground and build mud tubes to travel between the soil and the wood they’re feeding on. You’ll never see the workers out in the open. The swarmers are the only caste you’re likely to encounter with your own eyes, which is exactly what makes a swarming event such a valuable early warning. Colony size varies widely depending on location, food supply, and environmental conditions. Some colonies stay small, while others grow to contain thousands of individuals.
