Standard spray foam does not stop mice. Even products labeled “pest block” or “rodent proof” can be chewed through by a determined mouse. Mice only need an opening the size of a dime to squeeze into your home, and polyurethane foam, no matter how hard it sets, is soft enough for their teeth to shred in minutes. The good news is that spray foam can still play a useful role in sealing out mice when you combine it with the right materials.
Why Mice Chew Through Spray Foam
Mouse incisors grow continuously throughout their lives, which means they need to gnaw on things constantly to keep their teeth worn down. Cured polyurethane foam, even the dense varieties, is no match for teeth that can score concrete and gnaw through soft metals. A mouse facing cold air on one side of a wall and warm air on the other will chew straight through a foam plug without hesitation.
The texture of spray foam actually makes the job easier for rodents. It’s full of air pockets, which means a mouse doesn’t need to grind through solid material. It tears and crumbles under their teeth. This is true of both the small cans of single-component foam you buy at hardware stores and the larger two-component professional systems. Once a mouse creates even a small tunnel through the foam, it has a new entry point that other mice will follow.
What “Pest Block” Foam Actually Does
Several brands sell spray foam marketed specifically for pest exclusion. These products are standard polyurethane foam, sometimes with a bitter taste additive meant to discourage chewing. The foam expands to fill gaps, hardens into a weather-resistant seal, and blocks airflow. That airflow part matters, because mice often find entry points by following drafts of warm air escaping from your home.
But even these pest-specific products acknowledge their limits. Product descriptions for pest block foams typically recommend using them alongside “additional protective barriers like steel mesh or foam blocks to enhance sealing performance.” In other words, the manufacturers themselves don’t claim the foam alone will keep mice out. The foam seals air and moisture. The hard material stops teeth.
Materials That Actually Stop Mice
The CDC recommends specific materials for sealing rodent entry points: steel wool, hardware cloth, lath screen, lath metal, cement, and metal sheeting. These are the materials professional pest control companies rely on because mice cannot chew through them.
Steel wool is the most accessible option for small gaps. Its thin metal fibers irritate a mouse’s gums and resist their teeth. For larger holes, hardware cloth (a welded wire mesh, usually with quarter-inch openings) or sheet metal provides a permanent barrier. Cement works for cracks in foundations and masonry.
The key detail: steel wool alone will rust, compress, and eventually fall out of a hole. That’s where spray foam becomes genuinely useful.
How to Use Spray Foam and Steel Wool Together
The most effective DIY approach combines a chew-proof material with spray foam as the binder and sealant. Here’s how pest professionals typically handle it:
- Pack steel wool or copper mesh first. Stuff the gap tightly with steel wool or copper mesh (copper won’t rust). Push it in firmly so there are no loose edges a mouse could pull out.
- Apply spray foam over and around the mesh. The foam locks the steel wool in place, seals out air and moisture, and creates a finished surface. If a mouse tries to chew through the foam, it hits metal.
- For holes larger than two inches, use hardware cloth. Cut a piece of quarter-inch hardware cloth slightly larger than the opening, secure it with screws or masonry fasteners, then foam around the edges to seal gaps.
This layered approach gives you the air sealing and insulation benefits of spray foam with the physical rodent barrier of metal. It’s the difference between a quick fix and an actual solution.
Where to Focus Your Sealing Efforts
Mice enter through gaps you’d never expect. Common entry points include where utility pipes and wires penetrate exterior walls, gaps around dryer vents, spaces beneath doors (especially garage doors), cracks where siding meets the foundation, and openings around window-mounted air conditioners. Check where your home’s different building materials meet each other, because those junctions shift and separate over time.
Walk the exterior of your home and look for any gap larger than a quarter inch. Remember, a mouse can compress its body through a dime-sized opening, roughly six millimeters across. If you can slide a pencil into a crack, a mouse can potentially get through it. Prioritize ground-level openings first, then work up, since mice are climbers but tend to enter at or below grade level most often.
Safety During Application
Spray foam releases chemicals during curing that deserve some caution. The foam may look hardened within seconds or minutes of application, but the EPA notes it continues to off-gas unreacted chemicals for hours afterward. Small cans of single-component foam (the type you’d use for mouse exclusion) typically take 8 to 24 hours to fully cure, depending on temperature, humidity, and how thickly you applied it.
Work in well-ventilated areas whenever possible. If you’re sealing gaps in enclosed spaces like crawlspaces or attics, open any available vents or access points and avoid lingering in the area. Trimming or cutting partially cured foam can release dust containing irritating chemicals, so wait until the foam has fully hardened and wear a dust mask when you sand or cut it. Keep pets away from freshly applied foam until it’s fully cured. Once the foam has completely hardened and any odor has dissipated, it’s inert and not a concern.
When Spray Foam Makes Sense on Its Own
There are situations where spray foam without metal reinforcement is reasonable. If you’re sealing very small cosmetic cracks that aren’t actual mouse entry points, foam alone works fine for energy efficiency. Interior gaps around pipes that are already behind walls and far from exterior access points are lower risk. And if you’re using foam purely to stop drafts while addressing the actual rodent entry points separately with metal, that’s a sound strategy.
But for any gap that connects to the outdoors or to an unfinished space like a crawlspace or attic, always pair foam with a chew-proof material. The extra minute it takes to stuff steel wool into a hole before foaming over it is the difference between solving the problem and creating a temporary plug that a mouse will defeat by next week.
