Snake Traps: Types, Placement, and Safety Tips

Snake traps come in three main designs: glue traps, funnel traps, and minnow-style live traps. Each works differently depending on whether you’re dealing with a snake inside your home or one moving through your yard. The right choice depends on the snake’s size, where you’ve spotted it, and whether you want to release it alive.

Types of Snake Traps

Glue traps are flat boards coated with a strong adhesive. A snake crawls across the surface and gets stuck. These are the most common option sold in hardware stores and are typically used indoors, in garages, crawl spaces, and basements. They’re inexpensive and require no setup beyond placing them flat on the ground. The major downside is that they also catch mice, lizards, and insects, and a stuck snake can injure itself struggling to escape. Snakes caught on glue traps can be released alive using vegetable oil (more on that below).

Funnel traps use a wire or mesh cage with one or more cone-shaped entry points. A snake follows a scent or prey item inside, and the narrow funnel opening makes it difficult to find the way back out. These are reusable, work well outdoors, and let you release the snake unharmed simply by opening a door on the trap.

Minnow-style traps operate on the same funnel principle but use a cylindrical mesh design originally made for catching bait fish. Many people repurpose these for smaller snakes. They’re cheap, widely available, and hold up well in outdoor conditions.

What Attracts Snakes Into Traps

Snakes hunt primarily by scent and heat detection, so an empty trap sitting in your yard is unlikely to catch much. The most effective approach combines a commercial snake lure with live bait. Snake lures are scent-based liquids applied to a cotton ball inside the trap, typically 4 to 5 drops, renewed weekly. The lure draws snakes toward the trap from a distance, but it won’t hold their attention the way a visible food source will.

Once a snake finds the trap, live bait is what actually gets it to enter. Frogs, lizards, crickets, roaches, and mice all work depending on the species you’re targeting. A hen’s egg can also be effective, especially for rat snakes and other egg-eating species. Think of the lure as the long-range signal and the bait as the close-range trigger. Using both together significantly improves your catch rate.

Where to Place Snake Traps

Placement matters more than the trap itself. Snakes follow edges, walls, and natural corridors rather than crossing open ground. They seek dark, warm, sheltered spots that protect them from predators and weather. Understanding this movement pattern is the key to catching one.

Outdoors, focus on areas near known hiding spots: rock piles, wood stacks, dense shrubs, foundation edges, and anywhere rodents are active. If snakes are entering a building, look for gaps around windows, doors, pipes, and foundation cracks, and set traps directly beside those entry points. Indoors, place traps along walls in dark, undisturbed areas like basements, utility rooms, and crawl spaces.

Space multiple traps at least 3 to 4 feet apart. Keep them away from areas where pets, children, or livestock spend time, particularly if you’re using glue traps. A dog or cat stepping on a glue board creates a messy problem you don’t want to deal with.

How to Release a Snake From a Glue Trap

If you catch a snake on a glue trap and want to release it, vegetable oil or non-stick cooking spray dissolves the adhesive without harming the snake. Here’s how to do it safely.

First, identify the snake. If there’s any chance it’s venomous, do not handle it yourself. Contact your state’s wildlife agency or a local herpetological society for help. A snake stuck to a glue board can still bite, and a venomous bite is a medical emergency regardless of the snake’s situation.

If you’re confident the snake is nonvenomous, move the trap to a flat, shaded work area away from temperature extremes. Spray the exposed adhesive surfaces (the parts the snake isn’t touching) with cooking oil first. This prevents the snake from getting re-stuck as it moves around. Then apply oil along the edges where the snake’s body meets the glue.

The glue can take anywhere from several minutes to over an hour to fully break down. Be patient. You can gently work the snake free as the adhesive softens, but never pull or peel the snake off by force. Their skin and scales are delicate, and forcing them loose can tear the skin badly enough to kill the animal after release. Even nonvenomous snakes may bite, musk (releasing a foul-smelling liquid), or defecate on you during this process, so wear gloves and expect some defensive behavior.

Avoiding Non-Target Catches

Glue traps are indiscriminate. They catch anything that crawls across them: mice, chipmunks, songbirds, lizards, and even small pets. Funnel and minnow-style traps are more selective since small mammals and birds can usually escape the funnel openings, but they’re not foolproof either.

To reduce unwanted catches, place traps in locations that are specifically along snake travel routes rather than in general wildlife corridors. Positioning traps tight against a wall or foundation edge, rather than in the middle of a path, favors snakes over other animals. If you’re using glue traps outdoors, covering them with a small shelter (a piece of plywood propped up a few inches, for example) creates the dark, tight space snakes prefer while discouraging birds and larger animals from stepping on the adhesive.

Check your traps frequently. Any non-target animal caught on a glue trap has a better chance of surviving if you find it quickly and release it with cooking oil. Some states have legal requirements for how often traps must be inspected. In Pennsylvania, for instance, all traps must be checked every 36 hours.

Legal Considerations

Trapping and relocating snakes is regulated differently in every state, and the rules are often stricter than people expect. Many states protect certain snake species, making it illegal to trap, harm, or possess them. In Pennsylvania, live capture of snakes is legal for property protection, but no captured wildlife may be kept alive, sold, or given away. The state’s Fish and Boat Commission, not the Game Commission, manages reptile regulations, which catches some people off guard.

Before setting any trap, check with your state’s wildlife agency to confirm which species are protected in your area and whether you need a permit. If you catch a threatened or endangered species, contact your state’s Department of Natural Resources before doing anything with the animal. Penalties for possessing protected reptiles can include significant fines.

Handling Equipment and Safety

If you’re moving a trapped snake to a release site, a few pieces of equipment make the process much safer. Snake tongs with a 1.5-meter (roughly 5-foot) reach and at least a 3-centimeter lip on the jaw are the standard recommendation. The longer reach keeps your body far from the snake’s striking range, and the wider lip grips without pinching or injuring the animal. A tong this size can safely handle snakes from about a foot long up to well over six feet.

For transport, round buckets work far better than square containers. Snakes placed in rectangular tubs find corners, climb up, and escape over the rim. A 50- to 70-liter round bucket with a clip-close lid, a central grip handle, and ventilation holes is ideal. Putting crumpled newspaper in the bottom gives the snake something to hide under, which keeps it calmer. Transparent buckets let you see what the snake is doing before you open the lid.

Snake hooks are useful for guiding a snake into a container or directing it out of a hiding spot. Look for hooks with a wide U-shaped end rather than a narrow V-shape, which doesn’t support heavier-bodied snakes well. Avoid snake bags unless you have significant experience. Snakes can and do bite through fabric, and multiple handlers have been bitten this way.

If you live in an area with spitting cobras or other species that project venom, sealed goggles or a full face mask are essential. Venom in the eyes is extremely painful and can cause lasting damage. Standard safety glasses aren’t enough because venom landing on your forehead can run down into your eyes with sweat. Goggles that seal fully around the eye socket are the minimum protection.
