Small Flying Bugs in House: 4 Types and How to Fix

Small flying bugs in your house are almost always one of four insects: fruit flies, fungus gnats, drain flies, or phorid flies. All are roughly the size of a sesame seed or smaller, and each one breeds in a different spot in your home. Identifying which you have tells you exactly where to look and what to clean to eliminate them.

How to Tell Which Bug You Have

These four insects look similar at a glance, but a few seconds of observation reveals clear differences.

  • Fruit flies are about 1/8 inch long with round, stout bodies and distinctive red eyes (though some species have dark eyes). They hover around fruit bowls, trash cans, and anywhere you’ve spilled juice, wine, or beer.
  • Fungus gnats are slightly smaller (1/16 to 1/8 inch), dark, and mosquito-shaped with long slender legs and clear or dark wings. You’ll spot them flying near windows or hovering around houseplants.
  • Drain flies are fuzzy and moth-like, gray to black, with broad wings they hold flat or tent-shaped over their bodies at rest. They’re weak fliers that only travel a few feet at a time, and they hang out near sinks and shower drains.
  • Phorid flies are the same size as fruit flies but tan to dark brown with a hunched, hump-backed profile. The easiest giveaway: they prefer running across surfaces in quick, erratic bursts rather than flying. This “scuttling” behavior is why they’re also called scuttle flies.

Fruit Flies: The Kitchen Problem

Fruit flies breed in anything fermenting. Overripe bananas, a forgotten potato, spilled syrup in a drawer, an empty wine bottle, the sludge at the bottom of your recycling bin. Their larvae feed on the yeasts that grow during decay, so any moist, sugary, or fermented organic material is a potential nursery. They don’t bite and don’t transmit disease, but they multiply fast enough to feel like an invasion.

A single female can lay up to 100 eggs per day. Those eggs hatch within 24 hours, and the larvae develop into adults in about 11 to 12 days at normal room temperature (around 72°F). That means one piece of rotting fruit can produce hundreds of new flies in under two weeks. In cooler homes, development slows, but the cycle doesn’t stop. New females become ready to reproduce within 8 to 10 hours of emerging.

To break the cycle, remove every possible breeding source. Throw out overripe produce, clean drip trays under the fridge, wipe up spills inside cabinets, rinse bottles and cans before recycling, and take out trash more frequently. Apple cider vinegar traps (a small dish of vinegar with a drop of dish soap to break the surface tension) catch adults, but traps alone won’t solve the problem if the breeding source remains. Once you’ve eliminated the source, the existing adults die off within a couple of weeks.

Fungus Gnats: The Houseplant Problem

If the tiny flies are concentrated around your potted plants, you’re dealing with fungus gnats. Their larvae live in moist potting soil, feeding on organic matter, fungi, and root hairs. In small numbers they’re harmless, but large populations can damage roots and stunt growth, especially in seedlings and young plants. Severe infestations in consistently wet, organically rich soil have killed houseplants outright.

The life cycle moves quickly. At 75°F, eggs hatch in about 3 days, larvae develop over roughly 10 days, and adults emerge after another 4 days in the pupal stage. A full generation takes about 17 days. The larvae are tiny, white, legless worms with shiny black heads. If conditions are wet enough, they leave slime trails on the soil surface that look like miniature snail tracks.

The most effective fix is controlling soil moisture. Let the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings. This kills larvae and makes the soil less attractive for egg-laying. For persistent infestations, a biological larvicide containing Bti (a naturally occurring soil bacterium) works well. When gnat larvae ingest Bti, it produces a protein that destroys their gut lining, killing them within days. It’s widely used in greenhouses and is safe for plants, pets, and people. You can find it sold as granules or liquid dunks at most garden centers. Watering it into the soil every week or two until the gnats disappear is the standard approach. A layer of coarse sand or decorative gravel on top of the soil also discourages females from laying eggs.

Drain Flies: The Plumbing Problem

Drain flies breed in the thin, slimy film of bacteria, algae, and organic gunk that coats the inside of pipes. Any drain you don’t use often, like a basement floor drain, a guest bathroom sink, or a seldom-used shower, can build up enough of this film to support a colony. Females lay eggs directly on the wet organic material lining the drain walls and won’t lay on dry surfaces.

These flies are easy to identify by their fuzzy, moth-like appearance and their habit of sitting motionless on bathroom walls near the problem drain. They don’t bite and don’t carry disease. They’re purely a nuisance, though seeing a dozen tiny moth-shaped flies perched around your bathroom is unpleasant enough.

Getting rid of them means removing the organic film where they breed. A metal pipe brush or drain brush scrubbed inside the drain physically strips away the buildup where eggs and larvae live. Following up with boiling water helps flush loosened material deeper into the plumbing. For ongoing maintenance, enzyme-based drain cleaners break down the grease and organic residue that drain flies feed on. Restaurants use these enzymatic products specifically for drain fly control, and they’re gentler on pipes than caustic chemical drain cleaners. Run water through unused drains at least once a week to prevent the film from accumulating in the first place.

Phorid Flies: The Warning Sign

Phorid flies breed in a wide variety of moist, decaying organic matter: pet waste, dirty mop heads, food that slipped behind an appliance, compost bins, garbage disposal residue, even the grime lining trash cans. In most cases, cleaning up the source solves the problem the same way it does for fruit flies. Check under and behind kitchen appliances, clean your garbage disposal, and inspect areas where organic debris might collect unnoticed.

What makes phorid flies different from the others is what a persistent infestation can signal. These insects have a remarkable ability to penetrate through soil and find organic material underground. If you’ve thoroughly cleaned every visible source and phorid flies keep appearing, the problem may be a cracked or leaking sewer pipe beneath your home’s foundation. Sewage-contaminated soil under a concrete slab is an ideal breeding ground for them. Pest control companies and plumbers can inspect drain lines with a flexible camera or inject smoke into the plumbing system to trace where flies are entering. Smoke follows the same path the flies use, escaping through foundation cracks or expansion joints. Fixing a broken sewer line under a slab is a significant repair, but an ongoing phorid fly infestation from this source won’t resolve any other way.

Quick Steps That Work for All Four

Regardless of which fly you have, a few principles apply across the board. Every one of these insects needs moisture and organic material to reproduce. Reducing both is the foundation of control.

  • Find the source first. Traps and sprays kill adults but do nothing about eggs and larvae. The population regenerates in days if the breeding site remains.
  • Clean aggressively. Wipe down counters, empty drip trays, scrub drains, take out trash and recycling more often, and check forgotten spots like the back of a pantry or under the fridge.
  • Dry things out. Fix leaky faucets, avoid overwatering plants, and run exhaust fans in bathrooms. Removing excess moisture makes your home inhospitable to all four species.
  • Be patient. Even after you’ve eliminated the breeding source, adults already in the pupal stage will continue emerging for one to three weeks. If new flies stop appearing after that window, the problem is solved.
