Rose Slugs: What They Are and How to Control Them

Rose slugs are small, pale green larvae that feed on rose leaves, creating distinctive see-through patches that make the foliage look skeletal. Despite their slug-like appearance and name, they aren’t slugs at all. They’re the larval stage of sawflies, a group of insects more closely related to wasps and bees than to any actual slug or caterpillar. Understanding what you’re dealing with matters, because the wrong treatment (including some of the most popular caterpillar sprays) won’t work on them.

What Rose Slugs Actually Are

Rose slugs are sawfly larvae. Adult sawflies are small, wasp-like insects that lay eggs on rose leaves in spring. The larvae that hatch look deceptively like caterpillars, with soft, pale green bodies and small brown heads. But they belong to a completely different insect order. You can tell them apart from true caterpillars by counting the fleshy, stub-like prolegs on their abdomen: rose slugs have prolegs on at least six abdominal segments, while caterpillars have five or fewer.

Three species commonly show up on garden roses:

  • Common roseslug: Green on top with yellowish sides and a brown head. The smallest of the three, growing to about 1/2 inch long. All ages feed by scraping the upper leaf surface, creating windowpane-like damage without chewing fully through the leaf.
  • Bristly roseslug: Pale green to yellowish green with a brown head and covered in tiny, hairlike bristles. Grows to about 3/4 inch. More common in cooler climates and coastal areas.
  • Curled rose sawfly: Green with rows of pale, short projections along its body. Has a pale brown to yellowish head with a distinct black eye spot on each side. Also reaches about 3/4 inch and tends to curl its body into a coil while feeding.

How to Spot the Damage

Rose slug damage has a signature look that’s easy to recognize once you know what to look for. Young larvae scrape away one surface of the leaf and the green tissue underneath, leaving the thin layer on the opposite side intact. That remaining layer turns white or translucent, creating what’s called a “windowpane” effect. Hold a damaged leaf up to the light and you’ll see these pale, papery patches clearly.

As the larvae grow, their feeding becomes more destructive. Older larvae chew between the main veins to create actual holes in the leaves. The earlier windowpane patches also dry out and eventually drop away, adding more holes. When a heavy infestation combines both stages of feeding, the result is leaves reduced to little more than a network of veins, sometimes described as “see-through” foliage. The overall appearance resembles skeletonized leaves, which is why rose slug damage is often confused with Japanese beetle feeding or other chewing insects.

Check the undersides of leaves if you suspect rose slugs. The larvae tend to feed on the lower leaf surface and are easy to miss because their pale green color blends almost perfectly with the leaf.

When They Appear

Rose slugs are primarily a spring and early summer problem. Adults emerge as the weather warms, lay eggs on leaves, and the larvae feed for several weeks before dropping to the soil to pupate. Some species produce a single generation per year, while others can have two or more generations in warmer climates, meaning you could see a second wave of damage later in summer. The common roseslug typically has one generation, while the bristly roseslug and curled rose sawfly may produce additional generations depending on local conditions.

Because rose slugs spend their pupal stage in the soil beneath the host plant, keeping the area around your roses clean and occasionally cultivating the top layer of soil in late fall or early spring can help reduce the overwintering population before they emerge.

Why Bt Sprays Don’t Work

This is the single most important thing to know about treating rose slugs. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), the go-to biological spray for caterpillar control, is completely ineffective against rose slugs. Bt products are specifically formulated to target moth and butterfly larvae. Rose slugs are sawfly larvae, a fundamentally different type of insect, and Bt simply won’t harm them. If you’ve been spraying Bt and seeing no improvement, this is why.

Effective Control Options

For light infestations, the simplest approach is handpicking. The larvae are slow and easy to spot on the undersides of leaves. A strong spray of water from a garden hose can also knock them off. Once dislodged, most won’t make it back to the plant.

When the infestation is heavier, several organic-approved products work well. Insecticidal soap is one of the most effective options. It works by direct contact, penetrating the larva’s outer coating and disrupting its cells. The key is applying it to the undersides of leaves where the larvae actually feed, spraying upward to make contact. You’ll need to reapply weekly or biweekly since the soap has no residual effect and only kills larvae it physically touches.

Neem oil and spinosad are two other organic choices that are effective against sawfly larvae. Both are listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) as approved for organic gardening. Horticultural oil also works through a similar contact mechanism. A simple homemade spray of four tablespoons of liquid castile soap mixed with one tablespoon of neem oil per gallon of water is a common DIY recipe gardeners use, though commercial insecticidal soap formulations (which use potassium salts of fatty acids as the active ingredient) tend to be more consistent in their results.

For severe infestations where organic methods aren’t keeping up, broader-spectrum options exist, but they come with trade-offs. Products containing permethrin, cyfluthrin, or bifenthrin will kill rose slugs on contact but also harm beneficial insects, pollinators, and natural predators that help keep rose slug populations in check naturally. In most home garden situations, insecticidal soap or spinosad applied consistently will bring the problem under control without those downsides.

Keeping Damage in Perspective

Rose slug damage looks alarming, but it’s rarely fatal to an established rose bush. The feeding is cosmetic, affecting leaves but not stems, buds, or flowers directly. A healthy, well-watered rose can regrow lost foliage within a few weeks. The real concern is repeated, heavy defoliation over multiple seasons, which can stress the plant and reduce its vigor over time. If you catch the larvae early in spring before they’ve done significant damage, even a few rounds of handpicking or soap sprays can keep your roses looking healthy through the rest of the growing season.
