Standard expanding spray foam will not stop rats on its own. Rats can gnaw through cured polyurethane foam relatively easily, treating it as just another soft obstacle between them and a warm building. However, when paired with wire mesh or steel wool, spray foam becomes part of an effective sealing system that blocks rodent entry and cuts off the airflow that attracts them in the first place.
Why Regular Spray Foam Fails Against Rats
Rat incisors grow continuously throughout their lives, and the animals gnaw constantly to keep them worn down. Cured expanding foam, despite feeling rigid to the touch, is no match for this. Pest professionals have documented rats chewing clean through foam-sealed gaps in walls, foundations, and pipe chases. The foam’s light cellular structure offers almost no resistance to rodent teeth.
Some brands market “pest block” or “rodent-resistant” foam that contains a bittering agent meant to discourage chewing. These products work better than plain foam, but a determined rat can still push through if the foam is the only barrier. The bittering agent makes the foam taste unpleasant, not impenetrable. Think of it as a deterrent layer, not a wall.
The Mesh-Plus-Foam Method
The most reliable approach combines a physical chew barrier with foam to create an airtight seal. Professionals and experienced DIYers typically stuff copper mesh, coarse steel wool, or hardware cloth into the gap first, then apply expanding foam over and through it. The metal stops the gnawing. The foam stops the airflow. Together, they eliminate both the physical opening and the scent trail that draws rodents to it.
Copper mesh is the preferred material for most situations because it doesn’t rust. Steel wool works well but can corrode over time in damp areas, eventually creating new gaps. Hardware cloth (welded wire mesh) is the strongest option for larger openings. Whichever you choose, pack it tightly into the hole before applying foam on the interior side, the exterior side, and through the middle of the mesh itself.
This matters because rodents locate entry points by following warmth and scent escaping from a building. Mice leave pheromone trails along routes they’ve used, signaling safe passage to other rodents. Those trails persist until the entry point is fully sealed. Foam alone might block airflow temporarily, but once a rat chews a small channel through it, the scent trail reactivates and the problem returns.
How Small a Gap Rats Can Use
Rats need an opening of roughly half to three-quarters of an inch, about the diameter of a penny. Mice are even more flexible, squeezing through gaps as narrow as a quarter inch (the width of a pencil). If a mouse’s skull fits through, the rest of its body follows. A quick test: if you can see light under a closed exterior door at night with interior lights off, that gap is large enough for a mouse.
Common entry points include gaps around plumbing pipes where they pass through walls or floors, spaces where electrical conduit or HVAC lines penetrate the building envelope, cracks along the foundation sill plate, and the gaps beneath exterior doors. Dryer vents, crawl space access points, and where rooflines meet walls are also frequent trouble spots. Check every penetration, not just the obvious ones.
Choosing the Right Foam
For most rodent-sealing work around the home, single-component foam sold in 12 to 24 ounce cans is sufficient. These products expand to fill gaps between roughly a quarter inch and one inch. For larger voids, you’ll need to apply the foam in layers or use backer material like mesh to give it something to grip.
If you’re sealing around electrical wires, cables, or plumbing that passes between rooms or floors, consider using a fire-rated foam. Fire block foam is formulated to resist the spread of flames and hot gases, and building codes often require it for penetrations through wall plates, floor assemblies, and ceiling barriers. One important note: once fire block foam is applied and cured, don’t cut or shave off the excess. The foam needs to remain intact to maintain its fire-blocking properties.
Application and Safety
Expanding foam releases chemical vapors during application and while it cures. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves and eye protection at minimum. In enclosed spaces like crawlspaces or utility closets, a respirator is a smart addition. The foam may look solid within minutes of application (the “tack-free” stage), but it’s still releasing chemicals at that point and hasn’t fully cured.
Most single-component cans take 8 to 24 hours to cure completely, depending on the product, humidity, and temperature. Avoid cutting or trimming the foam before it’s fully cured, as this can release dust containing unreacted chemicals. Once fully cured, the foam is considered relatively inert for everyday contact. If you’re working indoors, keep the area ventilated and avoid spending extended time near the application site until curing is complete.
Cleanup is easier if you plan ahead. Uncured foam is extremely sticky and nearly impossible to remove from skin and clothing once it starts to set. Wear disposable gloves and old clothes. Keep acetone or a manufacturer-recommended solvent nearby to wipe up wet foam from surfaces you didn’t intend to hit.
Step-by-Step Sealing Process
- Identify active entry points. Look for droppings, grease marks (dark smudges from body oils), gnaw marks, and light visible through gaps. Focus on the building exterior first.
- Clean the area. Remove loose debris from the gap so mesh and foam can bond to solid surfaces.
- Pack the mesh. Stuff copper mesh or steel wool firmly into the opening, leaving no loose edges a rodent could pull out.
- Apply foam. Spray expanding foam through and around the mesh, covering both the interior and exterior face of the opening. Fill to about 50% of the gap’s volume, since the foam will expand to fill the rest.
- Let it cure. Wait the full recommended cure time before painting, trimming (if it’s not fire block foam), or otherwise disturbing the seal.
- Inspect regularly. Check sealed areas every few months for signs of new gnawing or deterioration, especially after seasonal temperature changes that cause building materials to shift.
For gaps larger than about two inches, hardware cloth secured with screws or masonry anchors provides a more durable base than stuffed mesh. Apply foam over the hardware cloth to seal airflow, but let the rigid metal do the structural work of keeping rodents out.
