North Carolina is home to dozens of mosquito species, with activity spanning roughly March through September across most of the state. The most common species bites during the day, not just at dusk, which catches many residents off guard. Three mosquito-borne viruses circulate in North Carolina every year, though serious illness remains relatively rare.
The Most Common Species
The Asian tiger mosquito is the most widespread mosquito in North Carolina. Originally from Southeast Asia, it’s now firmly established across the state and is the species you’re most likely to encounter in your yard, at a park, or on a hiking trail. Unlike the classic image of mosquitoes swarming at sunset, the Asian tiger mosquito feeds during the daytime, from dawn to dusk. If you’re getting bitten while gardening at noon or grilling in the afternoon, this is almost certainly the culprit.
You can identify it by the single white stripe running down the center of its back and the black-and-white banded legs. It’s a smaller mosquito, aggressive, and persistent. It breeds in tiny amounts of standing water: a bottle cap, a folded tarp, a clogged gutter. That adaptability is exactly why it thrives in suburban yards throughout the Piedmont, Coastal Plain, and mountain foothills alike.
Other species are present too, particularly in the eastern part of the state where salt marshes and swampy lowlands create ideal breeding habitat. But for most North Carolinians, the Asian tiger mosquito is the primary nuisance and the one worth understanding.
When Mosquito Season Starts and Peaks
Mosquito activity in North Carolina begins when temperatures consistently reach about 50°F, which typically happens in March in the southern and coastal parts of the state and closer to April in the western mountains. Activity ramps up significantly once temperatures stay above 70°F, which is why May through September represents the core of mosquito season for most of the state. Warm, humid nights are especially important because they sustain both biting and breeding overnight.
Peak biting pressure generally hits between June and August, coinciding with the hottest, most humid stretch of summer. By late September or early October, cooling temperatures slow mosquitoes down, though a warm fall can extend the season by several weeks, particularly along the coast and in the Charlotte and Raleigh metro areas. The mountain region around Asheville and Boone tends to see a shorter season on both ends thanks to cooler overnight temperatures at elevation.
Mosquito-Borne Diseases in North Carolina
Three viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes within the state every year: West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, and La Crosse encephalitis. Cases of all three appear in low numbers annually, with most infections occurring between June and September. The majority of people who contract one of these viruses experience either no symptoms at all or a mild flu-like illness that resolves on its own. In rare cases, these viruses can cause serious brain inflammation (encephalitis or meningitis), which can be fatal.
La Crosse encephalitis is actually the most common mosquito-borne virus in North Carolina, concentrated in the western part of the state. It’s worth knowing about if you have children, because severe cases involving seizures and brain swelling occur most often in kids under 16. The virus is transmitted by a native woodland mosquito that breeds in tree holes and small containers near forested areas, which is why western North Carolina’s landscape makes it a hotspot.
West Nile virus appears statewide and is the arbovirus most people have heard of. Eastern equine encephalitis is rarer but more dangerous when it does cause illness, with a higher fatality rate. Cases tend to cluster in the eastern coastal plain where the mosquito species that carry it are more abundant.
Dengue, malaria, and yellow fever are not transmitted by mosquitoes within North Carolina. However, residents who travel to tropical regions can bring these infections home, and they are reportable diseases in the state.
Reducing Mosquitoes Around Your Home
Because the Asian tiger mosquito breeds in small containers of standing water, the most effective thing you can do is eliminate those water sources within your yard. This means dumping and scrubbing birdbaths weekly, clearing clogged gutters, flipping over unused flower pots, and emptying anything that collects rainwater after a storm. Even a discarded cup or a wrinkle in a tarp holding a tablespoon of water is enough for a breeding cycle.
A few less obvious steps make a real difference. Tree holes can be filled with expanding foam (not cement) to block them as breeding sites. Drainage problems in your yard that create persistent puddles should be corrected with grading or French drains. Debris in roadside ditches and culverts creates breeding habitat too. If the problem is on public land, report it to your county or municipality.
Spraying insecticide on shrubs, thickets, and trees along your property’s perimeter does reduce the mosquitoes resting in those areas during the day. The limitation is that mosquitoes from surrounding untreated areas will move back in fairly quickly, so perimeter spraying works best as part of a broader neighborhood effort rather than a standalone fix. Tight-fitting screens on all doors and windows remain one of the simplest and most reliable ways to keep mosquitoes out of your living space.
Personal Protection That Works
Because the Asian tiger mosquito bites during daylight hours, the old advice of only applying repellent at dusk doesn’t apply in North Carolina. If you’re spending time outdoors between dawn and sunset during mosquito season, repellent is worth wearing. Products containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are the most effective options, and the EPA maintains a searchable tool that helps you choose a registered repellent based on your activity and duration of protection needed.
Loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants provide a physical barrier, though that’s a tough sell in a North Carolina July. Light-colored clothing is slightly less attractive to mosquitoes than dark clothing. Fans on porches and patios help too, since mosquitoes are weak fliers and struggle in even moderate wind. A simple box fan aimed at ankle-to-knee height where you’re sitting can cut biting noticeably.
