Natural Remedies for Ants That Actually Work

Most ant problems can be solved with a combination of baiting, sealing entry points, and removing what attracted them in the first place. The approach that works best depends on whether you’re dealing with a few scouts or a full trail, but the core strategy is the same: kill the colony with bait, block their way in, and eliminate food sources so they don’t come back.

Why Killing Visible Ants Doesn’t Work

The ants you see on your kitchen counter are foragers, and they represent a small fraction of the colony. Squishing them or spraying them with a contact killer feels satisfying but does nothing to the queen and the thousands of workers still in the nest. Worse, spraying repellent chemicals near a trail can cause the colony to split and establish new nests in different locations, multiplying your problem.

Effective ant control targets the colony itself. That means using bait the foragers carry back to the nest, where it’s shared with other workers, larvae, and eventually the queen.

Homemade Borax Bait

The most reliable DIY ant bait uses boric acid (or borax) mixed with sugar water. The sugar attracts foragers, and the boric acid kills them slowly enough that they carry the poison back to the nest before dying. A recipe from the University of Hawaiʻi’s College of Tropical Agriculture calls for 1 teaspoon of boric acid powder and 3 tablespoons of white sugar dissolved in about 1¾ cups of warm water (distilled or bottled, not tap).

Soak cotton balls in the solution and place them near ant trails, or put the liquid in shallow containers like jar lids. The key is positioning: place bait directly along the paths ants are already using, not in random spots around the house. You want them to find it easily and recruit more foragers to it.

Patience matters here. Most baits are slow-acting by design, so you’ll likely see ants for a week or more after setting bait out. That’s a good sign, not a bad one. It means foragers are still carrying the bait home. NC State Extension recommends leaving bait in place for 3 to 4 days after you stop seeing any feeding activity, which ensures the colony has been thoroughly exposed.

Safety Around Kids and Pets

Boric acid is low in toxicity for adults but poses real risks for small children and pets. Lethal doses for infants can be under 5 grams, and even small acute exposures in infants have caused vomiting, diarrhea, and nervous system effects. Dogs may be more sensitive to boric acid than other animals, and young or older pets face higher risk. Place bait stations where children and pets cannot reach them: inside cabinets, behind appliances, or in covered containers with small entry holes only ants can access. If you have crawling babies or curious dogs, commercial bait stations with tamper-resistant enclosures are a safer option than open cotton balls.

Diatomaceous Earth

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a fine powder made from fossilized algae. It works by damaging the waxy coating on an ant’s exoskeleton, causing the insect to dehydrate and die. Dust it in thin layers along baseboards, behind appliances, and in cracks where ants travel.

There are limits to this approach. Oklahoma State University notes that diatomaceous earth will kill some ants but is not very effective when the soil is moist, and it rarely eliminates colonies on its own. It works best as a supplemental barrier in dry indoor areas, not as a standalone treatment. Reapply after cleaning or if the powder gets wet.

Essential Oil Repellents

Certain essential oils disrupt the scent trails ants use to navigate, which can redirect them away from specific areas. Peppermint oil is the most commonly used. The menthol it contains is highly irritating to ants and masks the chemical signals they leave for other foragers. Tea tree oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil, and lavender oil also show repellent effects.

A simple spray uses 10 drops of peppermint oil in 1 cup of water, with an optional teaspoon of dish soap to help it stick to surfaces. Spray it along windowsills, doorframes, and anywhere you’ve spotted ant activity. This won’t kill ants or reach the colony, so it’s best used alongside baiting rather than as your only strategy. Reapply every few days, since the scent fades quickly.

Vinegar and Dish Soap

A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water works similarly to essential oils by erasing scent trails. Wipe down countertops, floors, and other surfaces where ants have been traveling. This forces scouts to re-establish trails from scratch, which buys you time while bait does its work. Adding a few drops of dish soap to a spray bottle of water also creates an effective contact killer for visible ants, since the soap breaks down their protective outer coating. Neither of these methods affects the colony, so treat them as cleanup tools rather than solutions.

Seal Entry Points

Ants can enter through gaps as small as 1/16 of an inch. Once you’ve dealt with the immediate infestation, sealing their entry points prevents the next one. The University of Kentucky’s entomology department recommends a systematic approach:

  • Doors: Install door sweeps on all exterior doors. Lie on the floor and check for light coming through underneath, paying special attention to the bottom corners. Caulk along the bottom outside edge and sides of door thresholds. For garage doors, fit a rubber bottom seal (vinyl cracks in cold weather). Seal gaps under sliding glass doors with ½ to ¾ inch foam weatherstripping in the bottom track.
  • Windows: Caulk cracks around window frames using silicone or acrylic latex caulk.
  • Utility openings: Seal gaps where pipes, wires, outdoor faucets, gas meters, dryer vents, and cable lines enter the foundation or siding. These are among the most common entry points. Use caulk, cement, expandable foam, steel wool, or copper mesh depending on the size of the gap.

This is more labor-intensive than spraying, but it’s the most permanent fix. Every gap you seal is one fewer entry point for ants, spiders, and other pests for years to come.

Remove What Attracts Them

Ants enter homes looking for food and water. Reducing both makes your home a less appealing target. Store sugar, honey, and pet food in sealed containers. Wipe up crumbs and spills immediately, especially sticky residues from juice or syrup. Take out trash regularly and keep bins sealed. Fix leaky faucets and pipes, since moisture is just as attractive to many ant species as food. Even a thin film of grease on a stovetop can sustain a trail of ants for days.

If you have fruit trees, compost bins, or pet food bowls outdoors near the house, these can draw colonies close to your foundation. Moving them further from exterior walls reduces the chance that foragers discover an entry point.

Perimeter Treatments

For persistent problems, an insecticide barrier around your home’s exterior can supplement sealing efforts. Liquid products containing synthetic pyrethroids are widely available at hardware stores. Apply them at the base of exterior doors, around garage and crawl space entrances, around foundation vents and utility openings, and underneath siding. Treating a 2 to 6 foot band along the ground around the foundation, plus 2 to 3 feet up the foundation wall, creates a chemical barrier that kills ants before they find a way inside.

This type of treatment typically lasts several weeks before needing reapplication, and it’s most useful for homes in areas with heavy ant pressure or where comprehensive sealing isn’t practical.
