Natural Mosquito Repellents: What Works and What Doesn’t

Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) is the most effective natural mosquito repellent available, offering protection comparable to low-concentration DEET products. It’s the only plant-derived active ingredient widely recognized by the EPA for mosquito protection, and at higher concentrations it can keep mosquitoes away for up to six hours. Other plant-based options exist, but most fall far short of that mark.

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus: The Top Performer

Oil of lemon eucalyptus works because it contains a compound called p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), which activates specific scent receptors on mosquito antennae that trigger avoidance behavior. In both lab and field tests, products with 20% OLE or PMD provided six to eight hours of protection. That’s on par with repellents containing 15% to 20% DEET.

Concentration matters significantly. Products with 8% to 10% OLE protect for about two hours, while those in the 30% to 40% range can last six hours. Look for EPA-registered products specifically, because “pure” essential oil of lemon eucalyptus has not been tested or approved for use as a repellent and is not the same thing. PMD, the synthetic version of the active compound in OLE, performs identically and is found in many commercial products.

One important restriction: OLE and PMD products should not be used on children under three years old. For everyone else, including pregnant women, they’re considered safe when used as directed.

Other Plant-Based Options and How Long They Last

Beyond OLE, several other natural ingredients show some repellent activity, but their protection times vary wildly and most require frequent reapplication.

  • Geraniol (25%): Two to four hours of protection in lab studies.
  • Soybean oil (2%): Results ranged from about 90 minutes to eight hours depending on the study, making it inconsistent but potentially useful for short outings.
  • Clove oil: Two to four hours of full protection against multiple mosquito species, but it should never be applied undiluted to skin. It frequently causes rashes and irritation. Cinnamon and thyme oils carry similar risks.
  • Citronella (5-10%): Highly variable. One lab study found protection dropped off in under 20 minutes. Another found certain formulations lasted up to five hours. In general, citronella burns off quickly from skin and needs constant reapplication.

The broader pattern with essential oils is that they evaporate fast. One study testing commercial repellents made with cedar, citronella, lemongrass, geranium, and peppermint found that complete protection times were all below 20 minutes. Citronella oil alone provided just 10.5 minutes of bite-free time. These products can help in a pinch, but they won’t carry you through an evening outdoors.

Why Most Essential Oils Fade So Quickly

Plant-based repellents work by releasing volatile compounds that interfere with the way mosquitoes detect human scent. Some of these compounds, like linalool and borneol, activate receptors on mosquito antennae that suppress their host-seeking behavior. In certain plant species, the ratio of these compounds determines whether mosquitoes are attracted or repelled. A flower that produces more of a particular monoterpene compound repels mosquitoes, while a closely related species with less of it attracts them.

The problem is that most of these volatile compounds are lightweight molecules that evaporate rapidly off your skin. OLE works better than other plant oils partly because PMD is a heavier, less volatile molecule that sticks around longer. Commercial formulations also use stabilizers and carrier ingredients that slow evaporation, which is why a well-formulated OLE spray dramatically outlasts a homemade essential oil blend.

What Doesn’t Work

Eating garlic and taking vitamin B supplements are two of the most persistent home remedy claims, and neither holds up under testing. Studies found no evidence that either substance reduces mosquito attraction. Mosquitoes locate you primarily through the carbon dioxide you exhale and the chemical signature of your skin, and changing what you eat doesn’t meaningfully alter those signals.

Wearable repellent wristbands are another common purchase that disappoints. Because mosquitoes target exposed skin wherever they find it, a small band releasing repellent on your wrist doesn’t create a meaningful protective zone around the rest of your body. The same logic applies to clip-on essential oil diffusers unless they’re generating enough airflow to disperse repellent across a wider area.

How to Get the Most From Natural Repellents

If you’re committed to avoiding synthetic chemicals, OLE or PMD products are your best bet. Choose a product with at least 20% concentration, apply it directly to all exposed skin, and reapply after the protection window listed on the label. For a short walk or a quick backyard session, a geraniol or soybean-oil product can work, but plan to reapply every couple of hours at most.

Avoid applying undiluted essential oils directly to your skin. Clove, cinnamon, and thyme oils are especially irritating, but even milder oils like citronella can cause sensitivity reactions at high concentrations. If you’re mixing your own blends, use a carrier oil and keep essential oil concentrations low. That said, homemade mixtures haven’t been tested for consistent protection times the way commercial EPA-registered products have, so you’re essentially guessing at how long they’ll last.

For young children under three, OLE and PMD are off the table. In that age group, physical barriers like long sleeves, pants, and mosquito netting over strollers are the most reliable non-chemical options. There is also a lesser-known EPA-registered ingredient called 2-undecanone, though it’s harder to find on store shelves.
