Natural Bug Repellent: What Works and What to Avoid

Natural bug repellents can work, but their effectiveness varies enormously depending on the active ingredient and how the product is formulated. The strongest natural option, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), is the only plant-derived repellent registered by the EPA that provides meaningful protection against both mosquitoes and ticks. Most other botanical options, like citronella and peppermint, offer protection measured in minutes rather than hours and need constant reapplication to do much of anything.

Understanding what actually works, what barely works, and what falls somewhere in between can save you a lot of itchy trial and error.

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus: The Strongest Natural Option

Oil of lemon eucalyptus stands apart from every other plant-based repellent. It contains a compound called PMD that occurs naturally in the leaves of the lemon eucalyptus tree, and it’s the active ingredient in EPA-registered products like Repel and Cutter Lemon Eucalyptus. At concentrations of 30% to 40%, OLE provides roughly six hours of protection against mosquitoes. Even lower concentrations of 8% to 10% protect for about two hours.

One important distinction: OLE is not the same thing as “pure essential oil of lemon eucalyptus” that you’d buy from an aromatherapy supplier. The essential oil has not been tested or registered as a repellent and is not recommended for that purpose. The EPA-registered versions go through a refinement process that concentrates the active repellent compound. If a label says “oil of lemon eucalyptus” and carries an EPA registration number, you have the right product. If it says “lemon eucalyptus essential oil,” you don’t.

The main limitation is tick protection. OLE does repel ticks, but it’s less effective and doesn’t last as long as synthetic options like DEET or picaridin, which can protect against ticks for eight hours or more.

Other EPA-Recognized Natural Ingredients

Beyond OLE, a compound called 2-undecanone is another EPA-registered natural repellent. It occurs naturally in wild tomato plants and is effective against both mosquitoes and ticks. At very high concentrations, it has performed comparably to DEET in testing, though its effectiveness at the lower concentrations found in consumer products is less certain. It’s not widely available yet, but it does appear in a handful of commercial sprays.

A newer compound called nootkatone, derived from grapefruit skin and Alaska yellow cedar, has shown promise against blacklegged ticks in research. However, consumer products containing nootkatone aren’t widely available yet.

Essential Oils: Short-Lived Protection

Citronella, peppermint, lemongrass, geranium, cinnamon, and clove are the essential oils most commonly marketed as bug repellents. They do repel mosquitoes to some degree, but they share a fundamental problem: they evaporate fast. Most essential oil repellents need to be reapplied every one to two hours to maintain any protection at all.

Among the common essential oils, clove oil performs best. Applied at 10% concentration in a lotion, it provided complete mosquito protection for about 112 minutes in a 2023 study. Cinnamon bark oil and geraniol (the main active compound in palmarosa oil) lasted over an hour. Peppermint, geranium, and lemongrass fell below that, and citronella ranked near the bottom for duration.

For tick protection specifically, these oils are largely ineffective. Harvard’s Lyme Wellness Initiative lists citronella, cinnamon, peppermint, sandalwood, geranium, and soybean oil as “not effective, or only minimally effective, against ticks.” If you’re hiking in tick country, essential oil sprays are not a reliable line of defense.

Why “FIFRA Exempt” Labels Can Be Misleading

Many natural repellent products on store shelves carry no EPA registration number. Instead, they use ingredients that fall under a federal exemption for “minimum risk pesticides.” This category includes citronella oil, lemongrass oil, peppermint oil, cedarwood oil, geranium oil, rosemary oil, clove oil, thyme oil, and several dozen other plant-based substances. Because these ingredients are considered low-risk, manufacturers can sell products containing them without proving they actually work. No efficacy testing is required.

That doesn’t mean these products are useless. It means you have no guarantee of how well or how long they’ll protect you. An EPA-registered repellent, by contrast, has to back up its protection claims with data.

Skin Safety and Allergic Reactions

Natural doesn’t mean gentle. Several essential oils commonly used in repellents are known skin sensitizers that can trigger allergic contact dermatitis, a delayed reaction that typically shows up 24 to 72 hours after exposure as itching, redness, and scaling. Lemongrass oil, clove oil, and tea tree oil are among the most common culprits.

The biggest risk factor is applying undiluted essential oils directly to skin, which can cause sensitization over time. Once you’ve become sensitized to a particular oil, even small amounts can trigger a reaction. If you’re making or buying a natural repellent, look for products that dilute essential oils in a carrier base at reasonable concentrations rather than applying them neat. Doing a small patch test on your inner forearm before broad application is a sensible precaution, especially if you have sensitive skin or eczema.

Children Under Three

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD on children younger than three years old. For young children, EPA-registered products with picaridin or IR3535 are generally recommended instead. If you prefer a natural option for a toddler, the choices are limited to the less effective essential oil products, and even those should be applied to clothing rather than skin when possible.

DIY Repellent Sprays: What to Expect

Homemade repellent sprays are popular, and the basic concept is simple: dilute essential oils in water or a carrier oil, put it in a spray bottle, and apply. The reality is a bit messier. Essential oils don’t dissolve in water, so any water-based spray will separate between uses and needs to be shaken thoroughly every time. Without an emulsifier to bind the oil and water phases together, the concentration you’re spraying on your skin will be inconsistent from one pump to the next.

Shelf life is another consideration. A well-stored DIY spray kept in a cool, dark place can last about six months before the essential oils degrade. But homemade products have no preservatives to prevent microbial growth, so anything made with water or witch hazel can develop bacteria over time, particularly if stored in warm conditions or contaminated by repeated handling.

The bigger issue is performance. Even a well-made DIY spray using the most effective essential oils will top out at roughly one to two hours of mosquito protection, and you’ll have no reliable way to measure the concentration you’ve achieved. Commercial formulations use controlled-release technology to slow evaporation and extend protection time. A spray bottle of water and lemongrass oil can’t replicate that.

Matching the Repellent to the Situation

Your best choice depends on what you’re trying to avoid and for how long. For a backyard barbecue where mosquitoes are the main concern, a citronella candle or an essential oil spray reapplied every hour or two can be enough. For a day hike in an area with mosquitoes, an EPA-registered OLE product at 30% or higher gives you solid protection without synthetic chemicals.

For tick exposure, the calculus changes. Natural options are significantly weaker against ticks than synthetics. If you’re in a region where Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses are a real concern, relying solely on natural repellents carries meaningful risk. Treating clothing with permethrin (which lasts through about six washes) and using DEET or picaridin on exposed skin remains the most protective combination. OLE offers partial tick protection but not at the same level, and essential oils offer almost none.

If avoiding synthetics entirely is your priority, combining an OLE-based skin repellent with physical barriers like long pants tucked into socks and thorough tick checks after being outdoors is the most practical natural approach for tick prevention.
