Mouse mesh is wire mesh with openings small enough to prevent mice from squeezing through gaps in your home. The critical specification is 1/4-inch by 1/4-inch openings or smaller, because mice can fit through any gap as wide as a pencil (about 1/4 inch). Larger mesh sizes that work fine for rats, birds, or raccoons won’t stop a determined mouse.
The Right Mesh Size
A 1/4-inch by 1/4-inch mesh in at least 24-gauge wire is the standard for mouse exclusion. This is commonly sold as “hardware cloth” at home improvement stores. Half-inch mesh works for most small animals but not mice. One-inch mesh is only useful for keeping out larger animals like squirrels or raccoons.
The gauge matters too. A 24-gauge wire is the minimum thickness recommended for mice. Thinner wire or lightweight screening can be chewed through. For rats, you can get away with a slightly larger 1/2-inch mesh, but if you want one solution that handles both, stick with the quarter-inch.
Which Material Lasts
Not all mesh materials hold up equally. The three you’ll encounter most often are galvanized steel, stainless steel, and copper, and each has trade-offs.
Galvanized steel hardware cloth is the most common and affordable option. It shapes easily around corners and openings, resists chewing, and holds up reasonably well outdoors. It will eventually rust in wet environments, but for most applications it lasts years before needing replacement.
Stainless steel mesh is stronger than galvanized and will never rust. It’s the best long-term choice for areas exposed to moisture, like foundation vents or weep holes in brick walls. The downsides: it costs significantly more and is harder to cut and bend into shape. Specialty products made from stainless steel are designed specifically for rodent exclusion and come pre-shaped for common applications like weep holes.
Copper mesh fills a different role. It’s sold in loose, stuffable rolls rather than rigid sheets, making it ideal for packing into irregular gaps around pipes and wires. Copper doesn’t rust and mice avoid biting into it because it doesn’t give way under their teeth. It’s not meant for covering large openings like vents but works perfectly for sealing penetrations.
Materials Mice Chew Through
Mice chew through spray foam, plastic screening, aluminum wire, sheetrock, plywood, plaster, and even fireproof insulation. If you’ve stuffed a gap with expanding foam alone and felt satisfied, that seal is temporary. Mice will gnaw right through it within days. Aluminum flashing is similarly vulnerable since rodents can claw and chew through it without much effort.
The general rule: if you can dent it with your thumbnail, a mouse can probably get through it. Stick with steel, stainless steel, or copper for any barrier that needs to hold.
How to Seal Gaps Around Pipes and Wires
Plumbing and HVAC penetrations are some of the most common entry points for mice. Wherever a pipe or wire passes through a wall, floor, or foundation, there’s usually a gap around it. The best approach combines metal mesh with expanding foam in a specific order.
First, cut a piece of copper mesh or steel wool and pack it tightly into the gap, pressing it deep so it fills the opening completely. Then apply expanding foam over the top. The foam seals out air and moisture while the metal mesh underneath does the actual work of stopping rodents. Foam alone fails. Mesh alone leaves air gaps. Together they create a lasting seal that mice won’t chew back through.
For larger holes, cut a piece of hardware cloth to size, bend it to fit, and secure it before foaming. The key is making sure no gap wider than 1/4 inch remains uncovered by metal.
Covering Vents and Weep Holes
Vents are a common weak point because they’re designed to let air flow, which means they have openings. Cover all vent openings with corrosion-resistant wire mesh that has 1/4-inch or smaller holes. For large vent openings, add crossbars behind the mesh to support it and prevent animals from pushing through.
Weep holes in brick walls deserve special attention. These small gaps between bricks near the base of a wall are there to let moisture escape from inside the wall cavity. You can’t simply seal them shut or you’ll trap moisture and cause structural damage. Stainless steel weep hole covers are designed to solve this problem. They snap or spring-load into the opening, blocking mice while still allowing air pressure to move moisture out of the wall. These covers come in different heights (typically 2-inch and 2.75-inch versions) to match your brick size, and you can trim them for a custom fit.
Fastening Mesh to Different Surfaces
How you attach mesh depends on what you’re attaching it to.
- Wood framing and siding: Screws with fender washers hold hardware cloth firmly against wood. Staples from a heavy-duty staple gun work for temporary fixes but can pull loose over time. For long-term protection on wooden structures like sheds or crawlspace access points, layer a band of sheet metal over the top edge of the hardware cloth to prevent rodents from peeling it back.
- Masonry and concrete: Use concrete screws (like Tapcon fasteners) with washers to anchor mesh against block or poured concrete. For foundation gaps, a curtain wall of mesh extending below grade prevents burrowing underneath slabs and sidewalks.
- Vinyl siding: Tuck mesh behind the siding where possible, securing it to the sheathing beneath. Where that’s not practical, use construction adhesive rated for outdoor use along with mechanical fasteners.
Whatever the surface, make sure the edges of the mesh sit flush. A mouse only needs a 1/4-inch gap at the edge of your barrier to make the whole effort pointless.
Below-Grade Protection
Mice and rats can burrow under foundations, so mesh protection sometimes needs to extend underground. A curtain wall of 1/4-inch hardware cloth buried vertically alongside a foundation or slab edge blocks tunneling rodents before they reach the structure. This is especially useful for older buildings without deep concrete footings, garden sheds, and outbuildings with slab-on-grade floors. Bury the mesh at least 12 inches deep and bend the bottom edge outward in an L-shape to discourage rodents from digging underneath it.
