Moths in Your House: Types, Signs, and How to Remove Them

Moths flying around inside your home are almost always one of two types: pantry moths feeding on stored food or clothes moths feeding on natural fabrics. Neither type bites or carries disease, but both can cause real damage if left unchecked. The key to getting rid of them is figuring out which one you’re dealing with, finding the source, and eliminating it.

Pantry Moths vs. Clothes Moths

Pantry moths (often called Indianmeal moths) are the ones you’ll usually notice first because they fly. They’re about half an inch long with distinctive two-toned wings: the front half is pale gray or tan, and the back half is coppery brown. You’ll spot them fluttering around kitchens, ceilings, and light fixtures, especially in the evening. Their larvae are small, off-white caterpillars that live inside food packages.

Clothes moths are harder to catch because they avoid light. Instead of flying toward lamps, they scurry into dark corners of closets, drawers, and storage bins. They’re smaller than pantry moths, uniformly golden or buff-colored, and tend to run rather than fly when disturbed. If you’re finding tiny moths in a bedroom or closet rather than the kitchen, clothes moths are the likely culprit.

The distinction matters because the food source is completely different, and so is the cleanup strategy.

Why They Showed Up

Pantry moths almost always arrive inside packaged food. Eggs or larvae hitch a ride in bags of flour, rice, cereal, dried fruit, nuts, pet food, or birdseed. Once inside your pantry, they spread quickly from one package to the next. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs, and in a warm kitchen the full life cycle from egg to adult can complete in as little as 27 days. At cooler temperatures, the same cycle can stretch to several months.

Clothes moths enter homes on secondhand clothing, vintage rugs, antique furniture, or wool items that have been in storage. Their larvae feed on keratin, the protein found in wool, silk, cashmere, feathers, fur, and leather. They’re especially drawn to fabrics that carry traces of sweat, food stains, or body oils, which provide extra nutrients. Pure synthetic fabrics are safe, but blends containing even a small percentage of animal fiber are fair game.

Signs of an Infestation

With pantry moths, the giveaway is usually webbing. Open a bag of flour or cereal and look for fine, silky threads clumping the food together. You may also see tiny caterpillars crawling on shelves or up walls, especially near the ceiling, as mature larvae leave their food source to find a place to pupate. Small moths resting on kitchen walls or circling light fixtures confirm the problem.

Clothes moth damage is subtler. Look for irregular holes in wool sweaters, bare patches on rugs, or thinning spots on upholstered furniture. You may find tiny, sand-grain-sized cases (the protective tubes larvae spin around themselves) or fine, powdery debris along the folds of stored garments. Adult moths hiding in closet corners are a late-stage sign; by the time you see them, larvae have likely been feeding for weeks.

Are They Harmful to People?

Common house moths don’t bite, sting, or transmit diseases. The adults are essentially harmless to your body. Some people develop mild allergic reactions from handling moths or from airborne particles shed by larvae, which can cause skin rashes or minor respiratory irritation. These reactions typically resolve on their own, though over-the-counter antihistamines or topical steroid creams can help if a rash is bothersome.

The real harm is to your belongings. Clothes moth larvae can destroy irreplaceable wool garments and heirloom textiles. Pantry moth larvae contaminate food, making entire shelves of dry goods inedible.

Getting Rid of Pantry Moths

Start by inspecting every package of dry food in your pantry, including items you might overlook like spice packets, tea bags, dried pasta, and pet treats. Anything with webbing, larvae, or clumped material should be sealed in a bag and thrown away in an outdoor trash bin. Don’t just toss infested packages into the kitchen trash, or adults will emerge indoors.

Once you’ve removed contaminated food, vacuum every shelf, corner, and crevice in the pantry. Pay special attention to shelf liner edges and the gaps where shelves meet walls, since larvae often pupate in cracks. Wipe all surfaces down with soapy water. Transfer remaining dry goods into hard, airtight containers (glass jars or thick plastic with tight seals) to prevent reinfestation and to contain any eggs you may have missed.

Pheromone traps designed for pantry moths can help you monitor whether the infestation is truly gone. These traps use synthetic female hormones to attract and capture adult males on a sticky surface, which disrupts breeding. They won’t eliminate an established infestation on their own, but they’re useful for confirming the problem is shrinking over time. Keep a simple count of moths caught each week to track your progress.

Getting Rid of Clothes Moths

The approach here is more labor-intensive because larvae can hide in places you rarely check: the back of a closet, inside a rolled-up rug, under heavy furniture, or in a box of winter clothes in the attic.

For washable items, laundering in water at least 120°F for 20 to 30 minutes kills all life stages, from eggs to adults. A hot dryer cycle adds extra insurance. For delicate items that can’t handle hot water, freezing works. Place the item in an airtight plastic bag, make sure it’s at room temperature (around 70°F) first, then put it in a freezer set below 18°F for at least 72 hours. The sudden temperature drop is what kills the larvae, so warming the item to room temperature before freezing is an important step.

Vacuum closets, drawers, and baseboards thoroughly, then dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister outside. Larvae and eggs can survive inside a vacuum, so leaving them in the machine just relocates the problem.

Pheromone traps for clothes moths work the same way as pantry moth traps: they capture adult males to slow the breeding cycle. They’re a monitoring tool, not a complete solution. If moths keep appearing on the traps month after month despite thorough cleaning, a professional pest treatment may be necessary.

Mothballs: Effective but Risky

Mothballs do kill clothes moths, but they’re more hazardous than most people realize. Their active ingredients (naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene) are regulated pesticides. The EPA requires that mothballs be used only inside airtight containers, where the toxic fumes build up to lethal concentrations for moths but stay contained and away from people and pets. Placing mothballs in an open closet, a dresser drawer, or scattered around a room is both illegal and dangerous, since the fumes escape into living spaces where you breathe them over extended periods.

Mothballs should never be used near food, in gardens, or in any open area. Some mothball products sold online are imported without EPA evaluation, meaning their contents and safety are unknown. If you choose to use mothballs, follow the label instructions exactly: sealed container, no living-space exposure, and keep them away from children and animals.

Preventing Moths From Coming Back

For pantry moths, the single most effective habit is storing all dry goods in sealed, hard-sided containers the moment you bring them home. This contains any eggs that arrived with the food and prevents moths from spreading between packages. Buying smaller quantities of items you use slowly (specialty flours, grains, dried fruit) reduces the chance of food sitting long enough for a full moth life cycle to play out.

For clothes moths, clean garments before storing them. Larvae are attracted to the oils and residues left by wear, so a freshly laundered or dry-cleaned sweater is far less appealing than one stuffed into a bin after a season of use. Store off-season wool, silk, and cashmere in airtight bags or bins rather than open closets. Vacuum closets and textile storage areas regularly, especially in corners and along baseboards where lint and hair accumulate.

Cedar blocks and lavender sachets are popular natural repellents. Fresh cedar does contain compounds that can deter moths, but the effect fades as the wood dries out, and neither cedar nor lavender will kill an active infestation. They’re best used as a supplementary measure in already-clean storage spaces, not as a substitute for thorough cleaning and sealing.
