The small moths flying around your bird seed are almost certainly Indian meal moths, the most common stored-product pest in homes. They don’t come from your house. Their eggs were likely already in the seed when you bought it, laid during storage or packaging at the warehouse. The good news: the infestation is manageable, and the seed is still safe for birds even with larvae present.
How to Identify Indian Meal Moths
Adult Indian meal moths are small, about 3/8 inch long with a 5/8-inch wingspan. Their most distinctive feature is two-toned coloring: gray near the head, with rusty bronze or coppery brown on the outer half of the wings. If you see plain gray or white moths, you’re likely dealing with a different species.
The larvae are cream-colored caterpillars, sometimes tinged yellowish-green or pink, with dark brown heads. Fully grown, they’re about 2/3 inch long. You’ll often spot them crawling away from the seed, heading up walls or across ceilings to find a place to spin a cocoon. The most obvious sign of infestation, though, is webbing. Larvae produce silk as they feed, binding clumps of seed together with fine, sticky threads. If your bird seed looks like it has cobwebs running through it, you have larvae.
Where the Moths Come From
Most people assume moths got into their bird seed at home. In reality, eggs are typically already present when the bag leaves the warehouse. Female moths lay between 40 and 350 eggs on or near food surfaces, and a single infested package can serve as a launching point for larvae to spread to other stored products. Because the adults can fly freely through warehouses, eggs end up in grains, pet food, dried fruit, and bird seed before it ever reaches the store shelf.
Once you bring an infested bag home, warmth accelerates the life cycle. Indian meal moths can go from egg to adult in as few as 27 days under ideal conditions, though it sometimes takes six months in cooler environments. Indoors, they can produce four to six generations per year. That’s why a small problem in one bag of seed can quickly become a household nuisance if the moths escape into your pantry or garage.
Is Infested Seed Safe for Birds?
Yes. Birds naturally eat insects, including moth larvae, so infested seed won’t harm them. A few dead moths or larvae mixed into the seed are nothing to worry about. If the infestation is minor, you can continue using the seed as-is. For heavy infestations where the seed is thoroughly webbed and degraded, it’s better to toss it, not because it’s toxic, but because the nutritional quality has been compromised by the larvae eating through it.
If you’d rather not serve larvae along with the seed, freezing the bag for at least 72 hours kills moths, larvae, and eggs. Four days is even better for thorough results. Seal the seed in zip-lock bags before bringing it inside to freeze, so no moths escape into your kitchen. After thawing, you can sift out the dead larvae and webbing.
How to Get Rid of an Active Infestation
Start at the source. Remove the infested bird seed from wherever you store it. If it’s in your garage, basement, or pantry, check every other stored food product nearby. Indian meal moth larvae feed on grains, cereals, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, spices, dog food, and anything similar. One infested bag can seed an entire shelf.
Empty the storage area completely and vacuum every surface, getting into cracks and corners where larvae or cocoons might hide. Then wipe everything down with soap and water. If you line your shelves with paper, replace it. Larvae can pupate in surprisingly hidden spots: behind appliances, under shelf liners, along ceiling edges.
For any food or seed you want to save, you have a few options:
- Freeze it at 0°F for four to seven days
- Heat it in a shallow pan at 140°F for one hour, or 120°F for two hours, stirring occasionally
- Microwave it for five minutes (works for small quantities)
After treatment, sift the seed to remove silk threads and dead larvae before storing or using it.
Pheromone Traps for Monitoring
Pheromone traps use a synthetic hormone to attract male moths to a sticky surface where they get stuck and die. These traps won’t eliminate an infestation on their own since they only catch males, but they’re useful for two things: confirming you still have a problem, and catching stragglers after you’ve cleaned up.
A practical approach is to tape a pheromone trap inside the lid of your seed storage container. Any males that emerge from eggs already in the seed get trapped before they can escape into your living space. This works especially well as a second line of defense after freezing, catching any moths that survived the treatment.
Preventing Future Infestations
The single most effective step is transferring bird seed into airtight containers immediately after purchase. A sealed plastic bin with a gasket lid or a metal container with a tight-fitting top will contain any eggs already in the seed and prevent new moths from getting in. Paper bags and loosely closed bins offer zero protection.
Temperature matters nearly as much as containment. Indian meal moth larvae develop fastest in warm conditions. Keeping your seed storage area below 72°F slows their life cycle dramatically. If you have space, storing seed in a chest freezer is the gold standard. Freezing kills any eggs or larvae present and keeps the seed fresh longer.
For the best results, combine both strategies. Freeze new seed for four days after purchase, then transfer it to an airtight container stored in a cool location. Add a pheromone trap to the container lid as an early warning system. This three-layer approach (freeze, seal, monitor) catches the problem at every stage of the moth’s life cycle and keeps your garage or pantry free of the fluttering adults that make the infestation feel so much worse than it actually is.
Buy seed in quantities you can use within a few weeks rather than stockpiling large bags for months. The longer seed sits in storage, the more time any hidden eggs have to hatch and multiply. Smaller, fresher batches mean fewer surprises.
