The most effective mosquito sprays for your body contain one of four active ingredients recommended by the CDC: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. These repellents don’t kill mosquitoes. They create a vapor barrier on your skin that masks the chemical signals mosquitoes use to find you, keeping them from landing and biting in the first place.
Which ingredient you choose depends on how long you’ll be outside, how you feel about texture and smell, and whether you’re applying it on a child.
DEET: The Longest Track Record
DEET has been used since the 1950s and remains the benchmark for mosquito protection. Products range from 4% to 100% concentration, but more isn’t always better. A 10% DEET product protects for roughly two hours. A 24% concentration provides about five hours of protection. Anything above 50% adds no extra benefit at all, just more chemical on your skin for no additional time.
The CDC recommends choosing a product with at least 20% DEET for meaningful outdoor protection. For children over two months old, concentrations up to 30% are considered safe. DEET should not be used on infants younger than two months.
DEET does have quirks. It feels slightly oily on the skin and has a noticeable chemical smell. More importantly, it dissolves certain plastics and synthetic fabrics, including rayon, spandex, and vinyl. If you wear sunglasses with plastic lenses, be careful not to touch them after application. Cotton, nylon, and wool are unaffected.
Picaridin: A Strong Alternative
Picaridin is newer than DEET and increasingly popular. Studies have found it slightly more effective than DEET against mosquitoes and equally effective against ticks. It’s available in concentrations from 7% to 20%, and like DEET, higher percentages mean longer protection rather than stronger repellency.
Where picaridin really stands out is the user experience. It’s odorless, non-greasy, and won’t damage plastics or synthetic materials. If you’ve avoided body repellents because you dislike the feel of DEET, picaridin is worth trying. The EPA has concluded that normal use of picaridin poses no health concern, though it hasn’t been on the market as long as DEET, so its decades-long safety profile is still being established.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (sometimes listed as PMD on labels) is the only plant-derived ingredient the CDC recommends. It provides protection comparable to DEET products in the 15% to 20% concentration range, making it a reasonable choice for moderate outdoor time.
One important distinction: oil of lemon eucalyptus and “lemon eucalyptus oil” are not the same thing. The recommended repellent ingredient is a refined compound. Natural lemon eucalyptus essential oil has not been tested or approved as an effective mosquito repellent. Check the active ingredient panel on the label, not just the product name.
Why Most Natural Sprays Fall Short
Plant-based repellents made from citronella, peppermint, lavender, geranium, or similar essential oils offer limited protection. Products containing blends of these oils have been shown to repel mosquitoes for about two hours at best, and their real-world performance is often inconsistent. Citronella candles, despite their popularity, have little measurable effectiveness against mosquitoes.
If you’re in your backyard for a short evening, a plant-based spray might be enough. If you’re hiking, camping, or spending time near standing water where mosquito density is high, stick with one of the four CDC-recommended ingredients.
How to Apply Body Repellent
Spray repellent on all exposed skin, not just your arms. Mosquitoes will find any unprotected patch, including ankles, the back of your neck, and behind your ears. For your face, spray the product onto your hands first, then rub it on. Avoid your eyes and mouth. Don’t spray repellent under clothing, since it only needs to be on skin that’s actually exposed.
If you’re also wearing sunscreen, apply the sunscreen first and let it absorb before putting repellent on top. Sunscreen needs reapplication every two hours (more often if you’re swimming or sweating), but repellent typically lasts longer. Don’t reapply repellent on the same schedule as sunscreen. Instead, reapply only if you start getting bitten, and check the label for how often reapplication is allowed.
Permethrin: For Clothing, Not Skin
You may see permethrin sold alongside body repellents, but it is strictly for treating clothing and gear. It should never be applied directly to skin. When sprayed onto fabric and allowed to dry completely, permethrin binds tightly to the fibers and stays effective through multiple washes, killing mosquitoes and ticks on contact when they land on treated clothing.
To use it correctly, apply the product outdoors in a well-ventilated area, hang treated items to dry completely before wearing them, and wash treated clothing separately from other laundry. Combining permethrin-treated clothing with a skin-applied repellent gives you the strongest two-layer protection available.
Choosing the Right Concentration
The percentage on the label controls how long the product works, not how well it repels. A 10% DEET spray and a 30% DEET spray are equally good at keeping mosquitoes away in the moment. The difference is that the 30% product keeps working for several more hours before you need to reapply.
For a two-hour walk, a lower-concentration product is fine. For an all-day hike or a long evening outdoors, choose something with 20% or higher DEET, or 20% picaridin. Match the concentration to the time you’ll be outside, and you’ll avoid applying more chemical than you actually need.
