Fleas and mites are both tiny parasites that bite, itch, and invade homes, but they belong to entirely different branches of the animal kingdom and behave in distinct ways. Fleas are insects with six legs and a jumping habit. Mites are arachnids, more closely related to spiders and ticks, with eight legs and a tendency to burrow or hide in fabric. Knowing which one you’re dealing with changes how you treat your skin, your pets, and your home.
How They Differ Physically
Fleas are visible to the naked eye. Adults measure 1 to 4 mm long, roughly the size of a sesame seed, and appear black to brownish-black. Their bodies are flattened side to side (not top to bottom like most bugs), which helps them slip through animal fur. They have stout, spiny legs built for jumping, short clubbed antennae tucked into grooves on their head, and piercing mouthparts designed to puncture skin and draw blood.
Most mites are microscopic. Dust mites, scabies mites, and chiggers all require magnification to identify. Unlike fleas, mites have no antennae, and their head, midsection, and abdomen are fused into a single blob-like body. Adults and nymphs have four pairs of legs (eight total), while larvae have three pairs. This leg count is the quickest way to tell them apart under magnification: six legs means insect, eight means arachnid.
Where They Live and What They Target
Fleas are blood-feeders that live on a host animal. The cat flea is the most common species found on both cats and dogs, and it readily bites humans when pets aren’t available. Fleas spend most of their adult life in fur, but their eggs, larvae, and pupae accumulate in carpets, bedding, and upholstered furniture. Without a host, adult fleas survive only a few days to two weeks.
Mites occupy a wider range of habitats depending on the species. Dust mites never bite at all. They feed on shed human skin flakes and thrive in mattresses, pillows, and carpeted areas, especially in warm, humid environments. Scabies mites are true parasites that burrow into human skin and reproduce there. They’re host-specific, meaning the varieties that infest dogs or cats can cause a temporary rash on people but can’t complete their life cycle on a human host. Chiggers live outdoors in tall grass, leaf litter, and woodland edges. Only their larvae bite, latching onto skin at ground level before dropping off after feeding.
How the Bites Look and Feel
Flea bites typically appear as clusters of small, raised red bumps. They concentrate on the lower legs and feet, or wherever clothing fits snugly against the skin. The bites itch intensely and often form a line or tight group, sometimes called “breakfast, lunch, and dinner” bites because fleas tend to sample several spots in a row.
Mite bites vary by species. Scabies produces intense itching, especially at night, with small red bumps that look like pimples. You may also see thin, wavy lines on the skin where the mite has burrowed, particularly between the fingers, on the wrists, along the sides of the feet, and around the elbows and knees. Chigger bites show up as red welts around the ankles, waistband, or anywhere clothing creates a warm fold. Dust mites don’t bite, but their droppings and body fragments trigger allergic reactions: sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and worsened asthma.
Risks Beyond the Itch
Fleas carry a more serious disease profile. They are the vector for plague, the bacterial infection historically transmitted from rats to humans. They also transmit murine typhus and can carry tapeworm larvae that infect pets and, occasionally, children who accidentally swallow an infected flea. Tungiasis, a tropical condition where a female flea burrows into the skin of the foot, is another flea-specific risk.
Mites pose different concerns. Scabies is highly contagious through prolonged skin contact and causes a persistent infestation that won’t resolve without treatment. Dust mites are one of the most common indoor allergen sources, affecting an estimated 20 million Americans. Certain mite species found on rodents can transmit rickettsial diseases, but for most people the primary mite-related health issue is either scabies or dust mite allergy rather than infectious disease.
How They Affect Pets
In dogs, flea allergy dermatitis causes intense scratching and crusty, irritated skin concentrated on the lower back, base of the tail, and inner thighs. Cats with flea allergies develop similar signs on the face, neck, and back, often with visible hair loss from overgrooming. Even a few flea bites can trigger a full allergic reaction in sensitive animals.
Mites cause a different set of skin conditions in pets, collectively called mange. Sarcoptic mange (caused by scabies-type mites) produces severe itching and crusty, thickened skin, often starting on the ears and elbows. Demodectic mange, caused by a different mite species, tends to cause patchy hair loss with less itching and is more common in young dogs with developing immune systems. Ear mites are another frequent problem, especially in cats, producing dark, crumbly discharge inside the ear canal. A veterinarian can distinguish between flea and mite problems using skin scrapings examined under a microscope.
Getting Rid of Fleas
Flea control requires treating both the animal and the environment simultaneously. On pets, topical or oral products that target fleas specifically are the standard approach. The key fact about flea biology that drives treatment strategy: a female flea starts laying eggs within two days of her first blood meal, eventually producing an average of 27 eggs per day. Those eggs roll off the pet and land in your carpet, couch cushions, and pet bedding. Within 5 to 11 days the eggs hatch into larvae that feed on organic debris in the carpet fibers.
The pupal stage is the hardest to kill. Pupae can survive inside their cocoons for up to five months, protected from insecticides, then emerge within seconds when they detect vibration or body heat from a passing animal. This is why flea problems often seem to come back weeks after treatment. Thorough vacuuming (immediately disposing of the bag or canister contents), washing pet bedding in hot water, and sustained use of pet flea prevention for several months are all necessary to break the cycle.
Getting Rid of Mites
Mite control depends entirely on which species you’re dealing with. For dust mites, the strategy is environmental: wash all bedding in water at least 130°F (54.4°C) weekly to kill mites and remove allergens. Items that can’t be washed at that temperature can go in the dryer at 130°F or higher for at least 15 minutes. Freezing non-washable items for 24 hours kills dust mites but doesn’t remove their allergenic proteins, so it’s less effective for allergy relief. Keeping indoor humidity below 50% is one of the most effective long-term measures, since dust mites need moisture to survive.
Scabies requires a different approach entirely. Because the mites live inside your skin, no amount of house cleaning will resolve the problem. Prescription topical creams that kill the mites are applied from the neck down and left on overnight. All household members and close contacts typically need treatment at the same time to prevent reinfestation. Bedding and clothing worn in the previous three days should be washed in hot water, but extensive home fumigation isn’t necessary since scabies mites can’t survive more than two to three days off a human host.
