The most effective mice control products fall into four categories: traps, bait stations, exclusion materials, and repellents. Of these, traps and exclusion materials deliver the most reliable results. Your best approach combines killing or capturing the mice already inside with sealing the gaps that let them in. Here’s what works, what doesn’t, and how to choose.
Snap Traps Remain the Most Effective Option
Mechanical traps are the backbone of mouse control for good reason. In a head-to-head comparison of 11 different trap designs, the classic Victor Mouse snap trap had the highest capture rate at just over 10%, outperforming every live-capture device tested. Snap traps kill instantly, cost a few dollars each, and don’t introduce any chemicals into your home.
Live-capture traps (Sherman traps, box traps, and similar designs) work but at slightly lower rates. In the same study, live traps caught mice at about 8.5% versus 9.6% for lethal traps. If you prefer catching and releasing, expect to check traps at least twice a day to prevent the mouse from dying of stress or dehydration inside the device. You’ll also need to release mice at least a mile from your home, or they’ll find their way back.
Electronic traps deliver a lethal shock when a mouse enters the chamber. They’re clean, reusable, and avoid the startling snap of a traditional trap. The trade-off is price: most run $25 to $50 per unit. No large-scale comparative study has pitted them against snap traps under controlled conditions, but they’re a solid choice if you want a hands-off kill method.
Regardless of trap type, placement matters more than the trap itself. Set them perpendicular to walls with the trigger end facing the baseboard, since mice travel along edges. Peanut butter, chocolate, or nesting materials like cotton balls make effective bait. Use more traps than you think you need, especially in the first few days.
Rodenticide Bait Stations: Effective but Risky
Poison bait stations are widely sold and undeniably effective, but they come with serious trade-offs. The active ingredients in consumer rodenticides fall into two main groups, and understanding the difference matters for safety.
Anticoagulant rodenticides work by blocking the body’s ability to clot blood. First-generation versions require a mouse to feed multiple times before a lethal dose accumulates, and they clear the body relatively quickly. Second-generation anticoagulants are far more potent. A single feeding is enough to kill, but death takes two to three days. During that window, the mouse keeps eating, loading its body with many times the lethal dose. This is where the danger to other animals begins.
Non-anticoagulant products use different mechanisms. Bromethalin is a nerve toxin that causes respiratory failure. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is harmless in normal amounts but lethal to rodents in large doses, causing organ failure. These tend to kill faster than anticoagulants but carry their own risks to pets.
What Consumers Can Actually Buy
EPA regulations restrict what’s available to homeowners. Second-generation anticoagulants are not sold to retail consumers at all. First-generation anticoagulants and non-anticoagulant baits must be sold in packages of one pound or less and must come with or inside a bait station. Loose pellet bait is banned for consumer sale; only block or solid forms are allowed. All outdoor use requires tamper-resistant bait stations to reduce access by children and non-target animals.
The Wildlife and Pet Safety Problem
Any rodenticide that lets a poisoned mouse wander before dying creates a chain of risk. Hawks, owls, foxes, raccoons, bobcats, and coyotes that eat a poisoned mouse can absorb enough toxin to become seriously ill or die. Raptors are especially vulnerable because rodents make up the bulk of their diet. A weakened, poisoned mouse is easy prey, and that “easy lunch” can carry a fatal dose of anticoagulant.
Pets face the same danger. Dogs and cats can be poisoned by eating bait directly or by catching a poisoned mouse. Anticoagulant poisoning in pets causes internal and external bleeding as the body loses its ability to form clots. The antidote is vitamin K1 therapy, which reverses the effect over 24 to 48 hours. For second-generation anticoagulant exposure, treatment can last six weeks or longer due to how slowly the poison leaves the body. Bromethalin poisoning, by contrast, has no specific antidote and is harder to treat.
If you have pets, outdoor cats, or live near wildlife, traps are the safer choice. If you do use bait, keep stations inside tamper-resistant housings and check them regularly for dead mice before scavengers find them.
Exclusion Products That Keep Mice Out
Killing mice without sealing entry points is a losing strategy. Mice can squeeze through any gap the size of a dime, roughly a quarter inch. Exclusion products close those gaps permanently and are arguably the most important purchase you can make.
For small gaps (quarter inch to one inch), the gold standard is steel wool or copper mesh packed tightly into the opening, then sealed over with pest-block expanding foam. Copper mesh has an edge over steel wool because it won’t rust. Regular expanding foam alone is useless; mice chew right through it. The steel wool or copper mesh underneath is what stops them.
For medium gaps (one to three inches), hardware cloth with quarter-inch galvanized steel mesh is the go-to material. Cut it slightly larger than the opening, press it into place, and seal the edges with exterior-grade silicone or polyurethane caulk. For large openings over three inches, sheet metal or aluminum flashing screwed into a frame provides a permanent barrier.
Foundation cracks call for hydraulic cement or concrete epoxy. Clean the crack with a wire brush, dampen it, and pack the cement in firmly. For doors, brush-style or rubber door sweeps that seal at least one inch of gap at the threshold will block a common entry point that most people overlook.
Priority areas to inspect include where utility pipes and wires enter the house, dryer vents, garage door seals, foundation-to-siding transitions, and any gap around HVAC lines. A flashlight and a mirror on a stick can help you spot openings in hard-to-see spots along the foundation.
Ultrasonic Repellents Don’t Work
Ultrasonic plug-in devices are among the most heavily marketed mouse control products, and they are essentially useless. Lab studies have shown that high-powered ultrasonic sound can disrupt rodent behavior under tightly controlled conditions, but the generators used in those experiments are several grades above anything sold to consumers. Commercial devices can’t replicate the complicated sound patterns needed to produce an effect.
Research from McGill University’s Office for Science and Society found that the studies done on consumer-grade devices are extremely limited, often lack a control group, and have never proven the devices actually reduce infestations. Some animals simply ignore the sound. Others habituate to it within days. Save your money.
Natural repellents like peppermint oil have a similar evidence problem. While mice may avoid a freshly soaked cotton ball for a short time, there’s no reliable research showing peppermint oil prevents or resolves an infestation. It can complement other methods as a mild deterrent near sealed entry points, but it won’t solve a mouse problem on its own.
When DIY Products Aren’t Enough
A single mouse spotted in your home could be a lone scout. Two to five mice suggest a breeding pair has moved in, and standard traps combined with exclusion work may handle it. Once you’re seeing signs of six or more mice, you’re dealing with an established infestation that typically requires professional intervention.
The signs that point to a larger population include droppings in multiple rooms, a persistent ammonia smell (from accumulated urine, especially in cabinets, basements, or crawl spaces), gnaw marks on food packaging, and grease marks along baseboards where mice repeatedly travel. If you’re catching mice in traps but the signs don’t diminish after a week or two, the population is likely larger than your traps can handle. Professionals can locate nesting areas, identify entry points you’ve missed, and deploy commercial-grade exclusion that outlasts DIY materials.
Building an Effective Product Kit
For a typical home with early signs of mouse activity, a practical product list looks like this:
- Snap traps (6 to 12): More is better in the first week. Place them every 5 to 10 feet along walls where you’ve seen droppings or heard activity.
- Steel wool or copper mesh: A bag or roll for packing into gaps before sealing.
- Pest-block expanding foam: Applied over the mesh, not as a standalone barrier.
- Exterior-grade caulk: For sealing smaller cracks and finishing edges.
- Hardware cloth (quarter-inch mesh): For covering vents, larger gaps, and crawl space openings.
- Door sweeps: For any exterior door with visible light or airflow at the bottom.
Bait stations make sense for garages, sheds, or outbuildings where pets and children aren’t present. For inside the home, traps paired with thorough exclusion are safer and just as effective. The goal isn’t just to kill the mice you have. It’s to make your home a place they can’t get into again.
