If small white moths have suddenly appeared all over your yard, kitchen, or closets, you’re likely dealing with one of a few common species that tend to show up in large numbers during warm months. The good news: adult moths themselves are mostly harmless. They don’t bite, sting, or carry disease. The bad news: their larvae are the real problem, and a swarm of adults means eggs have already been laid somewhere nearby.
Figuring out where the moths are congregating tells you almost everything you need to know about which species you have and what damage to look for.
Moths Flying Up From Your Lawn
The most common cause of “little white moths everywhere” outdoors is the sod webworm moth, also called the lawn moth. These are pale, buff-to-white snout moths about half an inch long that hold their wings tight against their bodies, giving them a slim, almost tubular shape. The telltale behavior: they fly up in short, low bursts just above the grass when you walk through your yard or mow. On warm evenings, you may see dozens zigzagging over the turf.
The adults themselves don’t feed on grass. Female moths drop tiny white eggs onto the lawn surface while flying, and the larvae that hatch are the destructive stage. Sod webworm caterpillars chew grass blades at the base, creating irregular brown patches that look moth-eaten. A heavily infested lawn, with more than 100 larvae per square yard, can develop bare spots quickly, especially during drought when the grass is already stressed.
The timing follows a predictable pattern. Larvae that overwintered in the soil resume feeding in spring, then pupate from late May through early June. Adults emerge 10 to 14 days later, mate, and lay eggs from June through early July. A second generation of adults appears from late July through August. In warmer climates, you may see a third generation in early fall.
White Moths Near Trees and Shrubs
If the moths are concentrated around trees rather than your lawn, fall webworm moths are the likely culprit. These are slightly larger, with a wingspan of 1 to 1.5 inches and pure white wings that sometimes have small dark spots on the forewings. They emerge from cocoons in spring, mate, and lay eggs on the undersides of tree leaves. Each female deposits a single egg mass containing up to 600 eggs.
The caterpillars are the ones that build those conspicuous silky webs over branch tips. As larvae consume leaves inside the web, they expand it to cover more foliage. In heavy infestations, webs can envelop entire branches or even a whole tree. The caterpillars eat the soft tissue of leaves but leave the veins behind, creating a skeletonized look. Under ideal conditions, the full life cycle from egg to adult takes about 50 days, and southern regions can see up to four generations per year. The fall generation tends to be the most damaging and the most visible.
Moths Inside Your Kitchen or Pantry
Small moths fluttering around food storage areas are almost certainly pantry moths, most commonly the Indian meal moth. These aren’t pure white. They’re about half an inch long with brown wings, a tan stripe, and copper-colored tips. You might spot them resting on shelves, flying near ceilings, or clustered at the junction where walls meet the ceiling.
The larvae are the actual problem. They feed on stored grains, cereals, flour, nuts, dried fruit, pet food, and birdseed. As they eat, they spin silky webs that clump food together, and they leave behind droppings, shed skins, and eggshells. If you pull a bag of rice or oats from the back of your pantry and find webbing or tiny worm-like caterpillars, you’ve found the source.
Moths in Closets or Dark Rooms
Clothes moths are a different situation entirely. Webbing clothes moths are small, about half an inch, with golden-buff coloring and a tuft of reddish hair on the head. Unlike most moths, they avoid light and are weak flyers, so you’ll rarely see them unless you disturb a closet, attic, or storage area. If you’re finding small pale moths in dim corners of your home rather than near windows or lights, clothes moths are a strong possibility.
Their larvae are creamy-white caterpillars that feed on wool, fur, feathers, silk, and other animal-based fibers. They spin silken tubes or patches of webbing on fabric surfaces, and they prefer to feed in folds or concealed areas. The damage shows up as threadbare spots where fibers have been chewed at the base. On taxidermy mounts or fur items, you’ll see clumps of hair detaching from the skin. The casemaking clothes moth, a less common relative, builds a portable tubular case from silk and fiber fragments that it drags everywhere.
Infestations can also start from unexpected sources: bird nests in attics, animal carcasses in wall cavities, or lint and pet hair accumulation in air ducts.
Getting Rid of Lawn Moths
For sod webworms, the key is targeting the larvae in the soil rather than chasing adults around the yard. Keeping your lawn well-watered during dry spells reduces vulnerability, since drought-stressed grass suffers the worst damage. A healthy lawn can tolerate moderate larval populations without showing visible harm. If brown patches are already appearing, an insecticide labeled for lawn caterpillars applied in the evening (when larvae are active near the surface) is the standard approach. Biological options include products containing Bt (a natural bacterial insecticide that targets caterpillars) applied to the turf.
For fall webworms on trees, the webs look alarming but rarely threaten a mature tree’s health. Pruning out web-covered branch tips when they’re small and accessible is often enough. Healthy deciduous trees can tolerate significant defoliation and will leaf out again the following spring.
Clearing an Indoor Moth Infestation
Pantry moth cleanup starts with finding and removing the food source. Pull everything out of your pantry and inspect each package, especially items stored toward the back or bought in bulk. Toss anything with webbing, larvae, or unexplained clumping. Take the trash outside immediately rather than leaving it in an indoor bin.
After clearing infested items, scrub shelves and storage containers with hot soapy water. Vacuum cracks, crevices, and corners where larvae and eggs hide. Any uncontaminated food you want to keep can go into the freezer at 0°F or below for several days to kill eggs you might have missed. Going forward, store pantry staples in glass jars or thick-walled plastic containers with airtight seals. Pantry moth larvae can chew through thin plastic bags and cardboard. Clean up spills promptly, because even small amounts of food in a dark crevice can sustain larvae.
Pheromone sticky traps, available at most grocery and hardware stores, help catch remaining adult males and reduce the breeding cycle. Natural repellents like sachets of cedar, lavender, rosemary, thyme, or peppermint oil can deter moths from returning to treated areas. Keeping window and door screens closed also helps prevent new moths from entering.
For clothes moths, the approach is similar in principle: find the source, clean aggressively, and protect vulnerable items. Dry cleaning or washing woolens in hot water kills all life stages. Items that can’t be washed can be sealed in plastic bags and frozen for several days. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets in closets and drawers provide some deterrent effect, though they won’t eliminate an active infestation on their own. Regular vacuuming of closet floors, baseboards, and upholstered furniture removes the lint, pet hair, and debris that clothes moth larvae feed on between meals of your sweaters.
