Jumping worms are in Pennsylvania and spreading. These invasive worms from Asia, sometimes called crazy worms, have been found across the mid-Atlantic region, along the Eastern Seaboard, and throughout the Midwest. If you garden, compost, or spend time in wooded areas in PA, there’s a good chance you’ll encounter them, especially from June through late summer when they reach maturity and become easiest to spot.
How to Identify Jumping Worms
Jumping worms look and behave differently from the European earthworms most Pennsylvanians are used to seeing. The most obvious difference is movement: pick one up and it thrashes wildly, snaking side to side like a small serpent rather than slowly contracting the way a nightcrawler does. They sometimes shed the last few segments of their tail when grabbed, a defensive escape trick.
Physically, mature jumping worms range from about 1.5 to 8 inches long and have smooth, glossy skin. The key identification feature is the clitellum, the band that wraps around the worm’s body. On a jumping worm, this band is pale white, sits flat against the skin, and completely encircles the body just 14 to 15 segments behind the head. On a typical European earthworm, the clitellum is raised, pinkish, and sits much farther back, 23 to 32 segments from the head. Jumping worms also have noticeably large mouths compared to other earthworms.
Signs in Your Soil
You may notice the damage before you notice the worms themselves. Jumping worms live in leaf litter and the top few inches of soil, where they feed voraciously on organic material. Their waste, called castings, has a distinctive crumbly, granular texture that looks remarkably like coffee grounds or ground meat. If you pull back mulch in your garden and find this loose, grainy material sitting on the soil surface instead of the dark, moist topsoil you’d expect, jumping worms are the likely cause.
This texture change isn’t cosmetic. It signals that the worms have consumed the organic layer your plants depend on.
Why They’re a Problem
Jumping worms strip nutrients from topsoil by consuming mulch and leaf litter far faster than European earthworms do. The coffee-ground castings they leave behind don’t hold water or nutrients the way healthy soil does, which kills plants and increases erosion. Homeowners with established jumping worm populations often find that garden plants die off and new plantings struggle to take hold.
In forests, the damage runs deeper. Leaf litter is the foundation of the forest floor ecosystem. It insulates soil, retains moisture, and provides habitat for insects, salamanders, and ground-nesting birds. When jumping worms eat through that layer, the soil chemistry shifts, native soil organisms decline, and the forest can no longer support the same plant and animal communities. Pennsylvania’s hardwood forests, which depend on thick leaf litter to regenerate native wildflowers and tree seedlings, are particularly vulnerable. Unlike deep-burrowing earthworms, jumping worms don’t create vertical tunnels that aerate soil. They stay near the surface and simply consume the organic layer without replacing the structure it provided.
Their Life Cycle in PA
Jumping worms are annuals. The adults die each fall when cold weather arrives, but before they do, they deposit tiny cocoons in the soil. These cocoons are small enough to be nearly invisible, about the size of a mustard seed, and they survive Pennsylvania winters in the ground. When soil warms in spring, the cocoons hatch, and the new generation of worms grows rapidly through the summer. By June, they’re large enough to identify. By late summer, they’re fully mature and producing the next round of cocoons.
This cycle matters because it means the worms spread primarily through cocoons, not through adult worms traveling long distances. Cocoons hitchhike in contaminated soil, mulch, compost, and potted plants. Every time you buy nursery stock, share compost with a neighbor, or move soil from one property to another, you risk transporting cocoons to a new location.
How to Check Your Property
The easiest detection method is simply looking at your soil. Pull back mulch or leaf litter and check for the distinctive coffee-ground texture on the soil surface. If you see it, dig gently into the top few inches. Jumping worms live right near the surface, not deep in the ground, so you won’t need to dig far.
A mustard pour is another approach used by researchers and extension programs. This involves mixing ground yellow mustard with water and pouring it over a small patch of soil. The irritant drives worms to the surface, where you can observe them. The best time to check is from June through late summer, when jumping worms are large enough to identify confidently.
What You Can Do
There is no way to fully eradicate jumping worms once they’re established on a property. No pesticides are approved for use against them in home gardens, and their cocoons are extraordinarily difficult to remove from soil. Management focuses on slowing the spread and reducing populations where possible.
The most effective strategy is prevention. Before bringing new plants, soil, or mulch onto your property, inspect it carefully. Look for the granular castings and for worms that match the identification features above. If you share plants with friends or neighbors, shake the roots clean and remove as much soil as possible. Avoid moving leaf litter or soil from areas where jumping worms are present.
Heat kills both adult worms and cocoons. If you compost, maintaining internal temperatures above 104°F for several days can destroy cocoons in the material. Solarization, which involves covering soil or compost with clear plastic sheeting during the hottest months to trap heat, is another option, though it works best in small, contained areas rather than across an entire yard.
When you find adult jumping worms, you can remove and kill them by dropping them into a bag or container with rubbing alcohol or sealing them in a plastic bag and leaving it in the sun. This won’t eliminate the population, but it reduces the number of adults producing cocoons before fall. Hand removal is most productive in late summer when the worms are large and concentrated near the surface.
