Indoor Plant Worms: Types and How to Get Rid of Them

Those small worms wriggling in your houseplant soil are most likely one of four things: pot worms, fungus gnat larvae, grub worms, or nematodes. Most are harmless or even beneficial, but a couple can seriously damage your plants. Identifying which one you’re dealing with takes just a few seconds of observation.

Pot Worms: Tiny, White, and Harmless

Pot worms (technically called enchytraeids) are the most common worms found in indoor plant soil, and they’re completely harmless. They’re tiny, slender, usually less than an inch long, and have a translucent or whitish appearance that gives them an almost ghostly look. You’ll typically spot them when you water your plant or disturb the top layer of soil.

These little worms don’t feed on living plant tissue at all. They break down dead plant material and decaying roots into nutrient-rich compost, and their burrowing creates channels that aerate the soil and improve water retention. If anything, their presence suggests your soil has a healthy ecosystem with plenty of organic matter and beneficial microbial activity. You can leave them alone without worry, or pick them out if they bother you.

Fungus Gnat Larvae: The Troublemakers

If you’ve noticed tiny dark-headed worms with elongated, whitish, legless bodies near the soil surface, you’re likely looking at fungus gnat larvae. The adults are those annoying little flies (about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long) that hover around your plants and your face. The larvae are the ones doing the real damage underground.

In small numbers, fungus gnat larvae feed mostly on fungi and organic matter in the soil and cause little harm. But when populations build up in moist, organically rich soil, they start feeding on roots. Seedlings and young plants are especially vulnerable. Significant root damage and even plant death have been documented in houseplants with high populations. One telltale sign: a plant that’s wilting even though the soil is moist. That wilting may not mean it needs water. It may mean larvae have been chewing through the root system. In heavy infestations, larvae can leave visible slime trails on the soil surface that resemble tiny snail tracks.

The single most effective thing you can do is let the soil dry out between waterings. Fungus gnats thrive in consistently moist conditions, and letting the top inch or two of soil dry disrupts their life cycle. Yellow sticky traps near the plant will catch adults before they can lay more eggs. For a more aggressive approach, you can drench the soil with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution, which kills larvae on contact. Just be aware that hydrogen peroxide also kills beneficial soil microbes, so use it sparingly and only when the infestation is significant.

Grub Worms: White Curlers in the Soil

Grub worms are the larvae of June bugs and other beetles in the scarab family. They’re white, translucent, and typically curl into a C-shape when disturbed. Unlike pot worms, grub worms are genuinely harmful in any quantity. They feed directly on plant roots and damage organic matter in the soil. If you find one in a houseplant, remove it. Adult beetles sometimes lay eggs in outdoor pots that later get brought inside, which is the most common way they end up in indoor plants.

Nematodes: Too Small to See

Nematodes are microscopic roundworms, ranging from about 1/16 of an inch to just 3 millimeters long. You won’t see them with the naked eye. Most nematode species that show up in houseplant soil are plant parasites, and the damage they cause is the only way you’ll know they’re there.

Root-knot nematodes are the most destructive type. They pierce plant roots and lay eggs inside them, creating visible swellings or “knots” along the root system. Above the soil line, an infected plant looks stunted, yellowish, and generally unthrifty. Roots become galled and prone to secondary infections from fungi and bacteria, which accelerates the decline. If you unpot a struggling plant and notice bumpy, knotted roots that look abnormal rather than smooth and fibrous, root-knot nematodes are a strong possibility.

Nematode-infested soil is difficult to treat. Your best options are to repot the plant in fresh, sterile soil and trim away damaged roots, or to mix diatomaceous earth into the soil around plants, which helps deter soil-borne pests including nematodes.

How to Get Rid of Soil Pests

For fungus gnat larvae and other soil-dwelling pests, a layered approach works best. Start by adjusting your watering habits. Overwatering is the number one reason pests establish themselves in houseplant soil. Let the top layer dry out completely before watering again.

Diatomaceous earth (food grade) can be sprinkled on the soil surface or mixed into the top layer. It works by physically damaging soft-bodied insects and larvae. The catch is that it loses effectiveness when wet, so you’ll need to reapply after each watering. For best results, apply it to dry soil and water from the bottom.

For severe infestations, repotting into fresh soil is often the fastest fix. Remove as much of the old soil from the roots as possible, inspect for damage, and use a clean pot with fresh potting mix.

Preventing Worms Before They Appear

New bags of potting soil can harbor eggs and larvae, which is why many indoor gardeners sterilize their soil before use. The oven method is straightforward: spread the soil 3 to 4 inches deep on a baking sheet, cover loosely with foil, and bake at 180 to 200°F for 30 minutes. For smaller batches, microwave damp soil in a covered container for about 90 seconds per pound, stirring halfway through. Let it cool completely before potting.

New plants are the other major entry point. Any plant you bring home from a nursery or garden center can carry eggs, larvae, or adult pests in its soil. Keeping new plants separated from your existing collection for two to three weeks gives you time to spot problems before they spread. During that quarantine period, check the soil surface regularly and watch for tiny flies, slime trails, or worms near the drainage holes.

Good drainage matters too. Pots without drainage holes trap moisture and create exactly the conditions fungus gnats and other soil pests love. Using pots with holes, avoiding saucers full of standing water, and choosing a well-draining potting mix with perlite or coarse sand all make your plants less hospitable to unwanted guests.
