How to Make Insecticidal Soap With Dawn Dish Soap

The most widely recommended DIY insecticidal spray using Dawn calls for 2.5 tablespoons of liquid Dawn dish soap and 2.5 tablespoons of vegetable oil mixed into one gallon of warm water. That ratio, suggested by University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, produces a roughly 1 to 2% soap solution strong enough to kill soft-bodied pests without immediately scorching most plants. It’s a popular shortcut for gardeners dealing with aphids, whiteflies, or spider mites, but it comes with real tradeoffs worth understanding before you fill a spray bottle.

The Basic Recipe

For one gallon of spray:

  • 2.5 tablespoons liquid Dawn dish soap (original blue Dawn, not the ultra-concentrated or antibacterial versions)
  • 2.5 tablespoons vegetable oil (canola, soybean, or similar cooking oil)
  • 1 gallon warm water

Stir or shake gently to combine. The vegetable oil helps the solution stick to leaves and insect bodies rather than beading off. Only mix what you plan to use that day. The solution doesn’t store well, and fresh batches work better.

Why Dawn Isn’t Technically Insecticidal Soap

This distinction matters more than it sounds. True insecticidal soap, the kind sold at garden centers, is made from potassium salts of fatty acids. It’s an actual soap in the chemical sense. Dawn is a detergent, derived from petrochemicals, engineered to cut grease on dishes. The two behave differently on plant tissue.

Detergents like Dawn dissolve the waxy coating on leaf surfaces. That waxy cuticle is the plant’s primary defense against water loss and disease. Stripping it away can cause yellow or brown spotting, burned leaf tips, and leaf scorch, especially on sensitive plants. Commercial insecticidal soaps are formulated to minimize this damage while still killing pests. A Dawn-based spray carries a higher risk of plant injury because no one optimized it for foliage safety.

That said, plenty of gardeners use Dawn sprays successfully. The risk is real but manageable if you follow a few precautions.

Which Pests It Works On

Soap sprays of any kind work best against small, soft-bodied insects and mites. The solution disrupts the outer membrane of these pests, essentially dehydrating them on contact. Vulnerable targets include:

  • Aphids
  • Whiteflies
  • Spider mites
  • Mealybugs
  • Psyllids
  • Young scale insects (before they develop their hard shell)

Larger insects are generally unaffected. Caterpillars, beetle larvae, and sawflies shrug off soap sprays. Adult flying insects with hard exoskeletons, like lady beetles and bees, are also unlikely to be harmed, though their larval stages can be vulnerable. This is worth remembering: soap sprays are not selective. They kill beneficial mites and pest mites equally, and they can harm the larvae of insects you want in your garden.

How to Apply It Safely

The spray only works on contact. It has no residual effect once it dries, so you need to coat the insects directly. That means spraying the undersides of leaves, the stems, and anywhere you can see pest clusters. A fine mist from a pump sprayer works better than a heavy stream.

Temperature matters. Do not spray when temperatures are above 90°F. Heat combined with the soap dramatically increases the chance of leaf burn. Early morning or late evening on a mild day is the safest window. Avoid spraying in direct midday sun, and skip days when the plant is already drought-stressed.

Before spraying an entire plant, test a small area first. Pick a few leaves, spray them, and wait 48 hours. If you see discoloration, spotting, or curling, that plant is too sensitive for detergent-based sprays. Plants known to be sensitive include certain ferns, gardenias, sweet peas, and some flowering annuals with delicate foliage.

Plan on repeat applications. Because the spray only kills on contact and leaves no residue, you’ll likely need to spray every four to seven days until the pest population is under control. Thorough coverage each time is more important than frequency.

Concentration Limits

The 2.5 tablespoons per gallon ratio produces roughly a 1% solution. Going stronger is tempting when you’re dealing with a serious infestation, but concentrations above 2% (about 5 tablespoons per gallon) can cause severe plant damage. With Dawn specifically, staying at the lower end of that range is wise because detergents are inherently harsher on foliage than true soaps.

More soap does not mean more pest control. A 1% solution that thoroughly coats the insects will outperform a 3% solution sprayed carelessly. If your first application didn’t work, the problem is almost always coverage, not concentration.

When Commercial Insecticidal Soap Is Worth It

If you’re treating high-value plants, edible crops close to harvest, or anything you’ve noticed is sensitive to detergent, a commercial insecticidal soap is the safer choice. Products based on potassium salts of fatty acids are specifically formulated for pest control on plants. They cost more than a bottle of Dawn, but they carry far less risk of phytotoxicity and come with tested usage guidelines.

The Dawn recipe works in a pinch, especially for ornamental plants or tough, waxy-leaved vegetables like squash and tomatoes. For delicate herbs, young seedlings, or plants you’ve already stressed with drought or transplanting, commercial formulations give you a better margin of safety. Either way, the same rules apply: spray on contact, cover thoroughly, avoid the heat of the day, and repeat as needed.
