How to Make DIY Tick Tubes That Actually Work

DIY tick tubes are simple, inexpensive devices you can make at home to reduce tick populations in your yard. They work by delivering permethrin-treated nesting material to mice, which are the primary hosts for young ticks. When mice collect the treated cotton and bring it back to their nests, the permethrin kills ticks living on the mice without harming the rodents themselves.

How Tick Tubes Work

White-footed mice are the most important host for immature blacklegged ticks, the species responsible for transmitting Lyme disease. Larval ticks pick up the Lyme bacterium by feeding on infected mice, then pass it along as nymphs when they bite humans the following year. Tick tubes interrupt this cycle at the mouse stage.

Each tube is a short cardboard cylinder stuffed with cotton treated with permethrin, an insecticide that kills ticks on contact. Mice naturally forage for soft nesting material, so they pull the treated cotton from the tubes and carry it back to their burrows. As the cotton lines their nests, any ticks feeding on those mice come into contact with the permethrin and die. Permethrin breaks down harmlessly on mammal skin, so the mice are unaffected. Over time, fewer ticks survive to reach the nymphal stage, which is the life stage most likely to bite people.

Materials You Need

The supply list is short and cheap:

  • Cardboard tubes: Empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls. If using paper towel rolls, cut them in half.
  • Cotton balls or dryer lint: Cotton balls are easier to saturate evenly, but dryer lint works and is free.
  • Permethrin: Look for a product with at least 5% active ingredient. Concentrated permethrin (typically around 37% active ingredient) is the most cost-effective option and can be diluted with water to a 5% to 8% solution.
  • Rubber gloves and a dust mask: Wear both while handling permethrin.

You’ll also want a plastic bin or bucket for soaking the cotton and a flat surface where the treated material can dry completely before stuffing.

Step-by-Step Assembly

Start by mixing your permethrin solution. If you purchased a 37% concentrate, dilute it with water down to roughly 5% to 8%. For example, mixing about 1 part concentrate to 4 parts water gets you into that range. Always wear gloves and a mask during this step.

Place your cotton balls or dryer lint into a plastic bin and pour or spray the solution over them until they’re thoroughly saturated. Let the treated cotton dry completely. This step is critical for safety, especially if you have cats (more on that below). Once dry, loosely stuff each cardboard tube with the treated material. You want the cotton visible and easy for mice to pull out, not packed in tightly. Each tube should hold a few cotton balls’ worth of material.

A single batch of 20 to 24 tubes takes about 30 minutes to assemble, not counting drying time.

Where to Place Them

Tick tubes belong wherever mice live and travel. Focus on the transition zones between your lawn and wooded or brushy areas: along stone walls, at the base of woodpiles, near fallen logs, around the edges of sheds and outbuildings, and along fence lines bordering tall grass or forest. These are the corridors mice use regularly.

Space tubes roughly 10 feet apart in these habitat zones. A typical suburban yard with a wooded border might need 12 to 24 tubes per deployment. Place them on the ground, partially tucked under cover so they stay dry and feel like a natural foraging site for mice. Don’t put them in the middle of open lawn where mice rarely venture.

Timing and Replacement Schedule

Consistency matters more than perfect timing. A Penn State field study tested deployments starting in spring, summer, and fall and found that the specific season of initial deployment was less important than keeping fresh tubes available over time. Tubes need to be replaced roughly every month, because mice empty them quickly and weather degrades the cardboard.

That said, mouse activity does peak at certain times. Cotton use from tick tubes was highest in late September and October, when mouse populations are at their annual peak and demand for nesting material climbs as temperatures drop. If you can only deploy during part of the year, targeting late summer through fall gives you the best odds of mice actually collecting the treated cotton. Year-round deployment with monthly replacements is the most effective approach if you’re willing to keep up with it.

For a practical schedule: set out your first batch in April or May, replace monthly through October or November, and you’ll cover both the spring larval feeding period and the fall nesting surge.

Safety Concerns

Permethrin is one of the most widely used insecticides in the world and breaks down quickly on mammalian skin. It poses very low risk to humans, dogs, and the mice that carry the cotton. But there are two serious hazards to know about.

Cats

Cats are extremely sensitive to permethrin because their bodies lack the enzyme needed to break it down efficiently. Exposure to concentrated permethrin can cause anxiety, loss of coordination, muscle tremors, seizures, and death in cats. Once the treated cotton is dry and tucked inside tubes placed in outdoor rodent habitat, the risk to cats is minimal. But during preparation, keep cats away from the workspace entirely. Never let a cat come in contact with wet permethrin solution, and store all materials where cats cannot reach them.

Fish and Aquatic Life

Permethrin is highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. When it reaches lakes or streams, it binds to sediment and can persist for over a year. Don’t place tick tubes near ponds, streams, drainage ditches, or anywhere runoff could carry the chemical into water. Mix and soak your cotton away from storm drains, and dispose of any leftover solution according to the label directions rather than pouring it down a drain.

DIY vs. Commercial Tick Tubes

Commercial tick tubes (the best-known brand is Thermacell) use the same basic concept: permethrin-treated cotton inside a biodegradable tube. A box of 24 commercial tubes typically costs $25 to $40 and covers roughly a third of an acre for one deployment. Since you need to replace them monthly, costs add up fast over a full season.

DIY tubes cost a fraction of that. A bottle of concentrated permethrin runs $15 to $25 and makes enough solution for hundreds of tubes. Toilet paper rolls and cotton balls are essentially free if you save them up. The trade-off is your time and the need to handle the concentrate safely. If you’re comfortable mixing a dilution and wearing gloves, the DIY route saves significant money, especially over multiple seasons of monthly replacements.

Realistic Expectations

Tick tubes reduce the number of ticks feeding on mice in your yard, but they are not a silver bullet. They target only one host in the tick life cycle. Adult ticks feed on deer, and ticks can arrive on birds, chipmunks, and other wildlife that never touch your treated cotton. Tick tubes work best as one layer in a broader strategy that includes keeping grass mowed short, clearing leaf litter, creating gravel or wood chip barriers between lawn and woods, and doing personal tick checks after spending time outside.

The Penn State research underscores that irregular deployment produces inconsistent results. If you set out tubes once and forget about them, don’t expect much. Monthly replacement and multi-season commitment are what separate a noticeable reduction from a wasted afternoon.
