A homemade bee trap is straightforward to build with basic tools and a few dollars in materials. The most common version targets carpenter bees, which bore into decks, eaves, and fascia boards. A different style, called a bait hive or swarm trap, is designed to attract honey bee swarms for beekeeping. Both work well as DIY projects, but they use completely different designs and placement strategies.
Carpenter Bee Trap: Materials and Build
Carpenter bee traps mimic the tunnels these bees naturally drill into wood, luring them into a container they can’t escape. The core of the trap is a piece of 4×4 lumber about 10 inches long. You drill a 1/2-inch hole straight down the center, about 4 to 5 inches deep. Then, about 1 inch from the bottom of the block, you drill 1/2-inch entrance holes on all four sides at an upward angle so they connect to the bottom of the central hole. That angle is key: carpenter bees naturally bore across the wood grain for about half an inch, then turn 90 degrees to follow the grain. Your angled entrance holes replicate that geometry.
At the bottom of the block, attach a mason jar or a clear plastic bottle with the top cut off. Bees enter through the side holes, crawl up into the central cavity, then move toward the light at the bottom and drop into the jar. Once inside, they can’t find their way back to the angled entrance holes. The 1/2-inch diameter is the standard size, matching the tunnels carpenter bees excavate naturally. Don’t go larger or you risk trapping other insects you don’t want to catch.
How to Identify Carpenter Bees
Before building a trap, make sure carpenter bees are actually your problem. They’re large, black bees often mistaken for bumblebees, but you can tell them apart easily: carpenter bees have a shiny, hairless abdomen, while bumblebees have a fuzzy abdomen with black and yellow stripes. Carpenter bees are solitary. They don’t live in colonies, and each female drills her own tunnel to lay eggs.
You’ll typically notice them in spring, hovering around wooden structures. The males can seem aggressive, buzzing directly in front of your face near nesting sites, but males cannot sting. Females can sting but rarely do unless physically handled. The real damage comes from their tunnels, which weaken wood over time as new generations reuse and extend the same holes year after year.
Where to Hang a Carpenter Bee Trap
Placement matters more than the trap itself. Mount it 5 to 8 feet off the ground, directly on or very close to the structure where you’ve seen bee activity. Under eaves, along fascia boards, on shed corners, near deck rails, or on posts and beams where you’ve noticed hovering are all good spots. A sunny location under an eave tends to outperform a fully exposed trap on a pole, because carpenter bees prefer protected nesting sites that still get morning or midday sun.
The biggest mistake people make is placing the trap too far from the damage. A trap hung on a back fence won’t help with carpenter bees attacking your front porch trim. Keep it close to the target area. If you have activity on multiple sides of a structure, use multiple traps.
Honey Bee Swarm Trap: A Different Build
If you’re a beekeeper (or want to become one), a swarm trap captures a honey bee colony that’s looking for a new home. This is not a pest control trap. It’s a box designed to be attractive real estate for scout bees evaluating potential nesting cavities.
The ideal volume is about 40 to 53 liters (roughly 10 to 14 gallons). Research on scout bee preferences consistently shows they favor cavities in this range. A popular design holds six standard frames, with front and back walls around 19-9/16 by 9-1/2 inches, a bottom panel of 18-3/8 by 9-1/2 inches, and a small entrance hole about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Plywood works fine for the box. Include frames inside so the swarm can start building comb immediately, which makes transferring them to a permanent hive much easier.
Mount a swarm trap 8 to 15 feet high in a tree or on a structure, ideally near a tree line or area where you’ve seen bee activity. Face the entrance away from prevailing wind.
Attractants That Actually Work
For carpenter bee traps, no lure is needed. The trap works by exploiting the bees’ instinct to investigate existing holes in wood. Unpainted, untreated wood is more attractive because it smells like a natural nesting site. If you have old carpenter bee tunnels in a board, mounting the trap nearby lets those pheromone traces do the work.
Honey bee swarm traps benefit significantly from a lure. Lemongrass essential oil is the most popular DIY option. It mimics the pheromone that scout bees release when they’ve found a promising new home, drawing more scouts to investigate. A few drops on a cotton ball placed inside the box is the standard approach. Refresh it every couple of weeks during swarm season, typically spring through early summer. Commercial lures use synthetic versions of the same pheromone and tend to last longer between applications, but lemongrass oil has been used successfully by beekeepers for years and costs very little.
Old brood comb placed inside the box is another powerful attractant for honey bee swarms. The wax and residual pheromones signal that bees have successfully nested in the space before.
Maintenance and Timing
Carpenter bee traps work best from early spring through summer, when females are actively searching for nesting sites. Check the jar every week or two and empty it when it starts to fill. If you leave dead bees in the jar too long, the smell can deter new bees from entering. Some people add a small amount of water to the jar so trapped bees can’t fly back up toward the entrance holes.
For swarm traps, the window is shorter. Most swarming happens from April through June in temperate climates, though timing varies by region. Check the trap every few days during peak season. Once a swarm moves in, you’ll see steady traffic at the entrance within a day or two. Transfer the frames to a permanent hive within a week or so, before the bees build too much comb in awkward places inside the box.
Protecting the Right Bees
Carpenter bee traps are species-specific by design. The 1/2-inch entrance holes and wood-block construction attract carpenter bees because they match the tunnels these bees naturally create. Honey bees, bumblebees, and most wasps aren’t drawn to these holes in the same way. That said, if you’re seeing fuzzy, striped bees nesting underground nearby, those are bumblebees, not carpenter bees, and they’re valuable pollinators that don’t damage wood. Leave them alone.
Yellowjackets are sometimes confused with bees but are wasps with smooth, bright yellow-and-black patterns and noticeably thinner waists. They require a completely different trap design, typically a liquid-bait trap with a sweet or protein attractant. A carpenter bee trap won’t catch them effectively, and a yellowjacket trap won’t catch carpenter bees.
