Armadillos dig shallow holes in yards, typically 1 to 3 inches deep and 3 to 5 inches wide, as they root around for insects, grubs, and other invertebrates hiding in the soil. Stopping them comes down to a few proven strategies: removing their food source, installing the right kind of fencing, trapping, and using short-term deterrents. Here’s what actually works and what doesn’t.
Why Armadillos Are Targeting Your Yard
Armadillos have terrible eyesight. They navigate almost entirely by smell, sniffing out grubs, beetles, earthworms, and other soil-dwelling invertebrates just below the surface. If your yard has a healthy population of these critters (especially grub larvae), it’s essentially a buffet. The damage shows up as clusters of small, cone-shaped holes scattered across lawns, flower beds, and garden rows.
They’re most active at dusk and during the night, which is why you’ll often wake up to fresh damage without ever seeing the animal responsible. Most armadillo activity in yards is seasonal, peaking in warmer months when soil invertebrates are closer to the surface and easier to detect.
Remove Their Food Source
The most effective long-term strategy is making your yard less appealing. Because armadillos are hunting for soil invertebrates, eliminating that food source often pushes them to forage elsewhere. Treating your lawn with a grub control product in late spring or early summer reduces the larval insect population that armadillos depend on. Once the food dries up, the armadillo has little reason to keep returning.
This approach takes patience. Grub treatments need time to work, and an armadillo may keep visiting for a few weeks before it learns the yard is no longer productive. Combining this with one or two other methods below speeds things up considerably.
Install a Proper Exclusion Fence
Fencing is the most reliable way to physically block armadillos from a specific area, but a standard fence won’t cut it. Armadillos are strong diggers and surprisingly decent climbers. To stop them, you need a fence that accounts for both.
Bury the bottom of the fence 12 to 18 inches underground (deeper in sandy soil, where armadillos dig more easily). The aboveground portion should extend at least 3 feet high, and the top section should angle outward at roughly 40 degrees. That outward slant prevents the armadillo from climbing over. Welded wire or hardware cloth works well for this. A fully upright fence without the buried base will fail, since armadillos will simply dig underneath it.
This method is ideal for protecting gardens, flower beds, or other defined areas rather than an entire property. Fencing a whole yard this way is expensive and labor-intensive, so most people reserve it for the spots where damage matters most.
Trapping: What Works and What Doesn’t
Live trapping is a common recommendation, but it comes with a few surprises. A University of Georgia study tested 11 different baits and attractants, including nightcrawlers, chicken feed, eggs, bananas, marshmallows, sardines, and vanilla wafers. Seven of those attractants produced zero captures across more than 1,000 trap nights. The study found no significant difference in capture rates between baited and unbaited traps. Armadillos that were caught appeared to have simply walked into the trap by chance, not because they were lured in.
What did make a difference was trap placement and the use of guide boards. The most effective setup was an unbaited trap with “wings,” two 6-foot-long boards attached to the trap entrance to funnel the armadillo inside. Place these traps near active burrows, along building walls, beside landscaping features, or next to fallen trees and other natural barriers that channel the armadillo’s path. The trap itself should be large, at minimum 10 inches by 10 inches by 36 inches.
Before trapping, check your state and local wildlife regulations. Many states have specific rules about trapping, relocating, or euthanizing armadillos, and some prohibit relocation entirely because it can spread disease to new areas.
Motion-Activated Sprinklers
Motion-activated sprinklers can startle armadillos enough to chase them off in the short term. Because armadillos are active at dusk and overnight, these sprinklers won’t constantly trigger on pets and family members during the day. The sudden burst of water aimed directly at the animal is genuinely disruptive to their foraging.
The catch is that the effectiveness tends to be short-lived. Armadillos can habituate to the surprise over time. You can extend the usefulness by moving the sprinkler to a new location every few days so the animal can’t predict it. Think of sprinklers as a supplement to other methods, not a standalone solution.
Skip the Ultrasonic Devices
Ultrasonic noise makers and vibration-producing devices are widely marketed for wildlife control, but they don’t work in most outdoor situations. The University of Florida’s extension program specifically recommends against them, noting that both ultrasonic and vibration-based repellents are ineffective outdoors. Save your money.
A Note on Handling Armadillos
Nine-banded armadillos in the southern United States can carry the bacterium that causes leprosy (Hansen’s disease). Transmission to humans has been documented in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. The risk from eating well-cooked armadillo meat is essentially zero, but direct contact with a live or dead animal is a different story. If you trap an armadillo, wear thick gloves and avoid skin-to-skin contact. Don’t handle a dead armadillo bare-handed either.
Putting It All Together
The most effective approach combines two or three methods at once. Treat your lawn for grubs to cut off the food supply. Fence off gardens or flower beds using buried wire with an outward-angled top. Set an unbaited trap with guide boards near active burrows or along the armadillo’s likely travel path. Use a motion-activated sprinkler in the worst-hit area while the other strategies take hold. No single method is foolproof on its own, but layered together, they make your yard far less worth the effort for a foraging armadillo.
