Cockroaches love the PS5. The console runs warm, has wide ventilation grates, and offers a dark, enclosed space that’s practically designed as roach housing. The good news: you can get them out without destroying your console, using a combination of killing the roaches inside and then cleaning out the remains.
Why Roaches Target the PS5
Console repair shops dealt with this problem so often with the PS4 that some nicknamed it “the roach motel.” The PS5 carries on the tradition. Its ventilation openings are wide enough for roaches (especially German cockroaches, the small species common indoors) to walk right in. Once inside, they find warmth from the power supply, darkness, and enough space to settle in and breed.
A powered-on PS5 generates consistent heat, which is exactly what roaches seek out, particularly at night when the ambient temperature drops. If your home has any roach activity at all, your console is one of the first places they’ll go. Leaving it in rest mode overnight keeps it warm enough to attract them around the clock.
The Deep Freeze Method
The most common approach used by repair shops is freezing the console to kill the roaches inside. The process is straightforward, but you need to protect the console from moisture.
Seal your PS5 in a garbage bag and squeeze out as much air as possible. Then double-bag it. The goal is preventing condensation from forming directly on the electronics when the console goes from freezing temperatures back to room temperature. Some repair techs go a step further by placing rags dampened (and wrung out) with isopropyl alcohol inside the bag beneath the console, which helps kill roaches through fumes while also absorbing any trace moisture.
Place the double-bagged console in a deep freezer set to somewhere between 0 and 13°F. How long you leave it depends on who you ask. Many shops do 24 hours as a minimum, but others recommend 48 to 72 hours for a thorough kill, especially if there are egg cases inside. Some shops leave infested consoles in a deep freeze for two to three weeks to be absolutely certain. At minimum, 24 hours at 0°F will kill live roaches.
When you take it out, leave the console sealed in the bags at room temperature for several hours before opening anything. This lets it warm up gradually and prevents condensation from forming on cold circuit boards when they hit warm, humid air. Do not plug it in until it has fully reached room temperature.
The Sealed Bag Method (No Freezer)
If you don’t have access to a deep freezer, you can suffocate roaches by sealing the console in an airtight bag for an extended period. Double-bag the PS5, remove as much air as possible, and leave it sealed for at least a week. Some people add rags dampened with rubbing alcohol inside the bag (not touching the console directly) to speed things up. This takes longer than freezing but works without any temperature risk.
Cleaning Out the Console
Killing the roaches is only half the job. Dead roaches, droppings, and egg cases left inside will corrode components over time and continue to smell. You’ll need to open the console and clean it out.
Removing the PS5’s white side panels is easy and doesn’t require tools. Just slide them off. To go deeper, where roaches typically nest near the fan and power supply, you’ll need a T8 Security Torx screwdriver. Kits designed specifically for PS4 and PS5 disassembly are widely available and inexpensive.
Use compressed air to blow out dead roaches, droppings, and debris. Work in short bursts and hold the can upright to avoid spraying liquid propellant onto the board. For residue stuck to surfaces, 99% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab works well. It evaporates quickly and won’t damage electronics. Avoid lower concentrations like 70% isopropyl, which contain more water.
Pay close attention to the fan blades, heat sink fins, and the area around the power supply. These are the warmest spots and where roaches tend to congregate. Egg cases (small brown capsules about the size of a grain of rice) can be tucked into tight corners and may need to be picked out manually.
Drawing Roaches Out With Bait
If you’re not comfortable disassembling your console, or you want to lure roaches out before freezing or cleaning, cockroach gel bait placed near the console can help. Apply a pea-sized amount onto an index card and set it near the console’s vents. The bait contains attractants that draw roaches out, and because it kills slowly, roaches carry the poison back to wherever else they’re nesting.
Never apply any insecticide, spray, or bait directly onto or inside the console. Chemical residue on circuit boards can cause corrosion and short circuits. The index card method keeps the bait close enough to attract roaches but safely away from the electronics.
Preventing Reinfestation
A clean PS5 will get infested again within weeks if roaches are still active in your home. The console is a symptom, not the source. Gel bait stations placed in kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere you’ve seen roach activity will reduce the overall population. Keep food sealed, clean up crumbs, and fix any water leaks, since roaches need moisture even more than food.
For the console itself, avoid leaving it in rest mode overnight if you can. A powered-off PS5 cools down and becomes less attractive. Keeping the console elevated rather than sitting directly on carpet or a shelf against a wall also reduces access. Some people store their console in a well-lit, open area since roaches prefer dark, enclosed spaces and are less likely to enter a console that sits in the open on a desk compared to one tucked inside an entertainment center.
If your home has a significant roach problem, no amount of console-level prevention will keep them out permanently. Addressing the infestation at the household level is the only long-term fix.
