The “water bugs” crawling out of your drains are almost always one of two things: cockroaches (typically Oriental or American cockroaches) or drain flies, which are small, fuzzy, moth-like insects about 2 to 5 millimeters long. Both are attracted to the same thing inside your pipes, and getting rid of them requires removing that food source, not just killing the bugs you can see.
What’s Actually Living in Your Drain
Drain flies (also called sewer flies, moth flies, or filter flies) are the most common culprit. They’re tiny, furry-looking flies that hover near sinks, showers, and floor drains, especially at night. They don’t bite, but they multiply fast. Their entire life cycle revolves around a gelatinous biofilm that coats the interior walls of drain pipes. This biofilm is a slimy layer of bacteria, fungi, grease, and organic matter that builds up over time. The flies lay their eggs directly in it, and the larvae feed on it as they develop.
Cockroaches, on the other hand, use drains as entry points rather than breeding grounds. They travel through sewer lines and emerge through any drain opening that doesn’t have a functioning seal. If you’re seeing large, dark brown insects (an inch or longer) coming out of drains, you’re likely dealing with cockroaches, which require a different approach than drain flies.
A quick way to confirm drain flies: place a strip of clear tape over the drain opening at night, sticky side down. Check it in the morning. If small, fuzzy flies are stuck to it, you’ve found the source.
Why They’re Coming From Your Drains
Two conditions create the problem. The first is biofilm buildup inside the pipe. Every time food particles, soap residue, hair, or grease wash down a drain, a thin layer sticks to the pipe walls. Over weeks and months, this layer thickens into the slimy coating that drain flies need to breed. Kitchen sinks, shower drains, and basement floor drains are the most common hotspots.
The second condition is a broken or dry seal. The P-trap, that curved section of pipe beneath every drain, holds standing water that acts as a barrier between your living space and the sewer system. When the trap is full, bugs and sewer gases can’t pass through. But in drains that don’t get regular use (basement floor drains, guest bathroom sinks, utility drains), the water evaporates in as little as two to three weeks. Once that water is gone, the drain becomes an open pipe, and insects have a clear path into your home.
Step 1: Clean the Biofilm Out of the Pipe
Killing adult flies with a spray does nothing if the biofilm remains. New flies will hatch from eggs already laid in the slime within days. The goal is to physically remove the organic buildup inside the pipe.
Start with a stiff pipe brush or a long bottle brush. Push it into the drain opening and scrub the visible interior walls of the pipe. You’ll pull out dark, slimy gunk. This manual step is the single most effective thing you can do, because it destroys the breeding habitat directly.
Follow the brushing with a hot water and baking soda treatment:
- Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain.
- Add one cup of baking soda, then pour in a mixture of one cup vinegar and one cup water.
- Cover the drain and wait 5 to 10 minutes. The fizzing reaction helps loosen buildup clinging to pipe walls.
- Flush with another pot of boiling water to wash the loosened material away.
Repeat this process daily for about a week. Drain fly eggs hatch every 32 to 48 hours, so consistent cleaning over several days ensures you’re catching new larvae before they mature.
What Not to Pour Down the Drain
Bleach is the most common mistake. It won’t dissolve grease or organic solids, so it doesn’t actually remove the biofilm that drain flies need. Worse, it can damage your plumbing. Repeated bleach exposure weakens PVC pipes, corrodes metal pipes (especially galvanized steel or copper in older homes), and breaks down rubber gaskets and seals. Bleach sitting in a P-trap can dry it out and degrade the gasket, which ironically recreates the exact conditions that let bugs in.
If your home uses a septic system, bleach is especially risky. Septic tanks rely on bacteria to break down waste, and bleach kills that bacteria. Once the balance is disrupted, it can take weeks to recover, leading to clogs or a system that stops processing waste correctly.
Chemical drain openers have similar problems. They generate heat and corrosive reactions inside the pipe without targeting the thin biofilm layer where insects breed. An enzymatic drain cleaner is a better chemical option if you want something beyond baking soda. These cleaners use bacteria or enzymes that digest organic matter over time, gradually eating away at the biofilm without harming pipes.
Step 2: Restore the P-Trap Seal
After cleaning, run water through every drain in your home, including ones you rarely use. This refills the P-trap and reestablishes the water barrier that blocks insects from entering. For drains that get daily use (kitchen sinks, shower drains), this happens automatically. The problem drains are the ones you forget about.
For floor drains in basements, garages, or laundry rooms, set a reminder to pour a gallon of water down each one every two to three weeks. Adding a small splash of vinegar to the water helps discourage new biofilm growth. This simple habit prevents the trap from drying out and reopening the pathway for bugs.
Long-Term Prevention
Once you’ve eliminated the current infestation, a few changes keep it from coming back. Fine mesh drain covers or screens placed over drain openings physically block insects from entering or exiting. They also catch hair and debris before it enters the pipe, slowing biofilm buildup. These cost a few dollars and fit most standard drains.
For floor drains you almost never use, a waterless inline trap seal is a more permanent solution. These are silicone or rubber inserts that fit inside the drain opening and allow water to flow through while blocking air, odors, and insects from coming back up. They work even if the P-trap dries out completely, which makes them ideal for vacation homes, storage areas, or any drain that goes weeks without water flow. Most are press-fit designs that install in seconds without tools and fit standard 2-inch, 3-inch, and 4-inch drain sizes.
Sealing gaps around pipes is another overlooked step. Where drain pipes pass through walls or floors, small gaps in the surrounding material give cockroaches and other insects a way in. Caulk or expanding foam around these penetration points closes off entry routes that have nothing to do with the drain itself.
When the Problem Persists
If you’ve cleaned the biofilm, restored P-traps, and covered drains but still see bugs after two weeks, the breeding site may be somewhere you can’t reach. Biofilm can accumulate deep in horizontal pipe runs, inside garbage disposal housings, or in the overflow hole of a bathroom sink (that small opening near the rim). Try cleaning these secondary spots with a brush and the baking soda method.
Persistent cockroach problems coming from drains usually point to a larger issue in the sewer line or building plumbing. Cracked pipes, broken cleanout caps, or damaged vent stacks can give roaches access to your home’s plumbing system in ways that no amount of drain cleaning will fix. A plumber with a pipe camera can identify structural problems that a pest control company might miss.
