How to Get Rid of Springtails in Plants for Good

Springtails in your houseplants are almost certainly harmless, and the fastest way to get rid of them is to let the soil dry out. These tiny creatures depend on moisture to survive, so adjusting your watering habits alone can eliminate most infestations within a few weeks. For stubborn populations, a combination of drying, soil treatments, and repotting will clear them out entirely.

What Springtails Are and Why They’re in Your Soil

Springtails are wingless, insect-like arthropods about 1/16 of an inch long. They’re usually white, bluish, or dark gray, and they get their name from a forked, tail-like structure tucked under their abdomen that lets them spring several inches into the air when disturbed. If you see tiny creatures jumping off the soil surface when you water, you’re looking at springtails.

They feed on decaying plant material, fungi, molds, and algae, all of which thrive in moist potting soil. Overwatered houseplants create the perfect habitat: warm, damp, and rich in organic matter. Springtails aren’t invading your plants so much as colonizing the conditions you’ve created in the pot.

Most springtails pose no real threat to your plants. Mature plants are not significantly injured by them. The one exception is young seedlings: some species chew on tender roots and leaves, leaving tiny rounded pits on roots or irregular holes in thin leaves. Seedlings can wilt and die from this damage. But if your established houseplant looks healthy, the springtails are a nuisance, not a pest. They rarely cause enough damage to warrant control measures.

Let the Soil Dry Out First

The single most effective step is reducing moisture. Allow the soil to dry out nearly completely between waterings. Springtails cannot survive in dry conditions, and their eggs need moisture to develop. When you cut off their water supply, the population crashes on its own.

This means changing your watering routine, not just skipping one session. Push your finger an inch or two into the soil before watering. If it feels damp at all, wait. Many houseplants tolerate drier conditions than people assume, and most common species (pothos, snake plants, philodendrons) actually prefer it. If your plant is one that needs consistently moist soil, like a fern or calathea, you may need to combine drying with other methods listed below rather than relying on this approach alone.

Springtail eggs hatch in roughly 10 days, and juveniles reach adulthood in about 6 more days. That means a full generation can turn over in just over two weeks. You’ll want to maintain drier soil conditions for at least three to four weeks to break the breeding cycle completely.

Scrape and Replace the Top Layer

If springtails are concentrated at the soil surface, which they usually are, scraping off the top centimeter of soil and replacing it with a fresh, dry mix can remove a large portion of the population along with their eggs. This works well as a quick intervention while you adjust your watering schedule.

Use a well-draining mix for the replacement layer. Adding perlite or coarse sand to standard potting soil improves drainage and makes the surface less hospitable. Avoid topping with decorative moss or bark chips, which retain moisture right where springtails congregate.

Diatomaceous Earth as a Surface Treatment

Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a fine powder made from fossilized algae. Its microscopic sharp edges damage the outer coating of small arthropods, causing them to dehydrate. Sprinkling a light layer across the soil surface can reduce springtail numbers significantly.

Apply it with a small sifter or shake it from the container to get an even, thin dusting. Do this in a well-ventilated room and consider wearing a mask, because the fine dust is irritating to breathe. DE loses its effectiveness when wet, so apply it to dry soil and avoid watering from the top immediately afterward. Bottom-watering your plant (setting the pot in a tray of water and letting the soil absorb moisture from below) lets you keep the DE layer intact on the surface longer.

Neem Oil Soil Drench

Neem oil, diluted according to the product label and poured through the soil, can help control springtails and prevent eggs from hatching. Mix it with water as directed (most products call for a few teaspoons per quart of water, sometimes with a drop of dish soap to help it emulsify) and water the plant with the solution.

One application won’t end the problem. Because springtail eggs take about 10 days to hatch and adults can live for over a year, you’ll need to repeat the drench every week or two for several rounds. Patience matters here. Combining neem drenches with drier soil conditions between treatments gives you the best chance of breaking the lifecycle entirely.

Repotting for Heavy Infestations

If the soil is waterlogged, broken down, or the population is large enough that drying alone isn’t practical, repotting is the most thorough solution. Here’s how to do it without carrying springtails into the new pot:

  • Remove the plant and shake off as much old soil as possible.
  • Rinse the roots gently under lukewarm water to wash away eggs clinging to the root ball.
  • Inspect the root system while it’s exposed. Trim any mushy or rotting roots, which signal overwatering and provide food for springtails.
  • Repot into fresh, free-draining substrate. Choose a mix with plenty of perlite, pumice, or bark to improve aeration. A pot with drainage holes is essential.
  • Discard the old soil in outdoor compost or trash rather than reusing it for other plants.

After repotting, water lightly and then let the soil dry before watering again. This gives the plant a clean start and eliminates the damp, decaying environment springtails need.

Preventing Them From Coming Back

Springtails return when conditions invite them. A few habits keep populations from rebuilding:

Water only when the top inch or two of soil is dry. Empty saucers and cache pots after watering so roots don’t sit in standing water. Use well-draining potting mixes rather than heavy garden soil, which compacts and holds moisture. Keep an eye on humidity trays and any spot where water collects near your pots.

Good airflow around your plants also helps. Crowded plant shelves with poor ventilation stay damp longer, giving springtails exactly what they want. Spacing pots out or placing a small fan nearby can make a noticeable difference.

If you bring new plants home, check the soil surface before placing them near your existing collection. Springtails are easy to spot: just tap the pot or disturb the soil and watch for tiny jumping creatures. A quick soil drench or surface treatment on new arrivals prevents introducing them to the rest of your plants.
