Spider mites can be controlled naturally using a combination of physical removal, insecticidal soaps, predatory insects, and environmental adjustments. The key is acting fast and repeating treatments, because most natural methods only kill live mites on contact and don’t affect eggs. That means you’ll need to treat every five to seven days for at least two to three weeks to break the breeding cycle.
Spot Them Before They Spread
Spider mites are tiny, roughly the size of a grain of sand, so you’ll usually notice their damage before you see them. Look for fine stippling or tiny yellow dots on the upper surface of leaves, especially on the undersides where mites feed. As populations grow, you’ll see fine webbing stretching between leaves or along stems. By the time webbing is obvious, the infestation is already well established.
To confirm, hold a sheet of white paper under a suspicious leaf and tap it sharply. Tiny moving specks that look like pepper grains are spider mites. Red, green, or yellowish coloring is common depending on the species and time of year.
Blast Them Off With Water
The simplest natural control is a forceful jet of water from a garden hose. This physically dislodges mites, destroys their webbing, and washes away the dust layer that actually helps mites thrive and interferes with their natural predators. Ohio State University’s extension program notes that regular syringing can keep spider mites under control on most ornamental plants in the landscape while also conserving beneficial predator populations.
For outdoor plants, spray the undersides of leaves thoroughly every three to five days. For houseplants, bring them to a sink or shower and rinse each leaf, focusing on the underside. Disrupting the webbing is particularly useful because it delays egg laying until mites spin new silk, buying you time between treatments. On its own, water spraying won’t eliminate a heavy infestation, but it’s an excellent first step that reduces mite numbers enough for other methods to work.
Insecticidal Soap: The Workhorse Treatment
Insecticidal soap, made from potassium salts of fatty acids, is one of the most reliable natural options. It works by penetrating the mites’ outer shell, causing them to dehydrate and die. It’s a contact killer, meaning it only works on mites the spray physically touches, so thorough coverage is critical.
You can buy ready-to-use insecticidal soap sprays or make your own by mixing about one tablespoon of pure liquid castile soap (not detergent) per quart of water. Avoid dish soaps that contain degreasers, fragrances, or antibacterial additives, as these are far more likely to burn plant tissue. Spray every surface of the plant, paying special attention to leaf undersides, stems, and any crevices where mites congregate. Because the soap has no residual effect once it dries, you need to reapply every five to seven days for at least three rounds to catch newly hatched mites that the previous application missed.
Test any soap solution on a small section of the plant first and wait 24 to 48 hours. Some plants, particularly those with waxy or hairy leaves, are sensitive to soap sprays and can show leaf burn.
Rosemary and Other Essential Oils
Rosemary oil has real lab-tested efficacy against spider mites, not just anecdotal support. Research published in the Journal of Economic Entomology found that pure rosemary oil killed 50% of twospotted spider mites at a concentration of roughly 13 milliliters per liter of water. Commercial formulations containing 5% to 10% rosemary oil were actually twice as effective as those with higher concentrations, likely because their added surfactants helped the oil spread and stick to mites more evenly.
The same study tested for plant damage and found that products with 5% or 10% rosemary oil caused zero phytotoxicity to leaves, flowers, or fruit on greenhouse tomatoes. A product with 18% rosemary oil, however, burned about 12% of leaves at the recommended rate and damaged 40% of flowers. The takeaway: more is not better with essential oils. A dilute, well-mixed solution applied with a surfactant (a drop of castile soap works) outperforms a concentrated blast.
Other essential oils commonly used include peppermint, neem, and clove. Neem oil has the added benefit of disrupting mite reproduction and feeding, giving it a slight residual effect that pure contact sprays lack. With any essential oil spray, test on a few leaves first, apply in the cooler part of the day to reduce the risk of leaf burn, and repeat weekly.
Predatory Mites: Let Nature Do the Work
If you’re dealing with a recurring spider mite problem, especially in a greenhouse or on indoor plants, predatory mites are one of the most effective long-term solutions. These are beneficial mites that eat spider mites but leave plants completely alone.
The most widely used species is Phytoseiulus persimilis, a staple of greenhouse pest management programs across North America and Europe. It’s also used commercially in California’s strawberry industry alongside another predator species, Neoseiulus californicus. You can order both online from biological control suppliers, typically shipped as live mites on carrier leaves or in vermiculite.
There’s one important catch: humidity. P. persimilis needs relative humidity above 60% to survive, and it performs best above 70%. In one study, egg hatch rates dropped from 99.7% at 80% humidity to just 7.5% at 40% humidity. Eggs held at 50% humidity shriveled and died at every temperature tested. So if your home or growing space is dry, you’ll need to raise humidity around the plants (grouping pots together, using pebble trays, or running a humidifier) for predatory mites to establish themselves. N. californicus is somewhat more tolerant of lower humidity, making it the better choice for drier environments or outdoor gardens.
Release predatory mites as soon as you notice spider mites. They work best at low to moderate infestation levels. If webbing is already heavy, knock the population down first with water spraying or soap, then introduce predators to clean up what remains.
Raise Humidity, Reduce Stress
Spider mites thrive in hot, dry conditions. Dry air lets them feed more aggressively because it helps them evaporate the excess water they produce while feeding. At the same time, low humidity stresses the natural predators that would normally keep mites in check. This is why spider mite outbreaks are far more common in arid climates and during dry indoor heating seasons.
Keeping plants well watered during dry spells limits the drought stress that makes plants more vulnerable to mite damage. For houseplants, misting foliage, using a humidifier, or placing pots on trays filled with wet pebbles can all raise the local humidity enough to slow mite reproduction. Grouping plants together creates a small microclimate with higher moisture levels around the leaves.
Dusty leaves also favor spider mites. Wiping leaves regularly with a damp cloth or hosing down outdoor plants removes dust, keeps mite predators active, and physically removes mites and eggs in the process.
Why Timing and Repetition Matter
Nearly every natural spider mite treatment shares the same limitation: it doesn’t kill eggs. Insecticidal soap, essential oils, and water sprays all work on contact against live mites, but the eggs tucked into leaf crevices and webbing survive. New mites can hatch within three to five days in warm conditions, and a single female can lay dozens of eggs in her lifetime.
This is why a single spray never solves the problem. Plan on treating at least three times, spaced five to seven days apart, to catch each new generation as it hatches and before it can lay eggs of its own. In warm weather, when mites reproduce fastest, you may need to shorten that interval to every four or five days.
Combining methods gives the best results. Start by hosing down the plant to remove as many mites and as much webbing as possible. Follow up the same day or the next with an insecticidal soap or oil spray for thorough coverage. Repeat on schedule. If the problem is ongoing, introduce predatory mites after spraying stops (soap and oils will kill beneficial mites too, so don’t use both simultaneously). Adjust the environment to favor your plants and their allies over the mites: more humidity, less dust, consistent watering.
Pruning heavily infested leaves or stems and discarding them in a sealed bag also removes a large chunk of the population in one move, giving your follow-up treatments less work to do. For houseplants, isolate any infested plant immediately to prevent mites from spreading to neighbors.
