Getting rid of rats requires a combination of trapping, sealing entry points, and removing food sources. No single method works alone. Rats are intelligent, adaptable animals that learn to avoid threats quickly, so an effective plan attacks the problem from multiple angles at once. Here’s how to do it right.
Confirm You Have Rats
Before setting traps, make sure you’re dealing with rats and not mice, squirrels, or another pest. Rat droppings are the most reliable indicator: they’re dark brown, tapered at both ends, and shaped like large grains of rice. A single rat produces around 40 droppings per night, so you’ll typically find them clustered in feeding areas, under sinks, behind appliances, or along walls.
Other signs include greasy smudge marks along baseboards and walls. Rats have poor eyesight and follow the same paths repeatedly, leaving dark streaks of oil and dirt from their fur on surfaces they brush against. You may also notice gnaw marks on wood, plastic, pipes, or electrical wiring. Rats gnaw constantly to wear down their teeth, and chewed wiring is a genuine fire hazard. Scratching sounds in walls or ceilings at night, especially running or scurrying, are another strong indicator.
Identify Which Rat You’re Dealing With
The two most common species in homes are Norway rats and roof rats, and they behave differently enough that it changes your approach.
Norway rats are stocky, brownish-gray, and can reach 16 inches long including the tail. Their tails are shorter than their bodies, and they have blunt noses and small ears. These rats prefer ground level and below: basements, crawl spaces, sewers, and the areas under decks. They’re excellent diggers and often create burrow systems in the soil around foundations.
Roof rats are sleeker and more agile, with dark brown or black fur and tails longer than their bodies. They have pointed noses and large ears. True to their name, they prefer elevated spaces: attics, rafters, false ceilings, and trees. If you’re hearing activity overhead, you’re likely dealing with roof rats. If you’re finding droppings in the basement or at ground level, Norway rats are the more probable culprit.
This distinction matters because it tells you where to focus your trapping and where to look for entry points. Norway rats enter through foundation cracks and gaps around ground-level pipes. Roof rats get in through damaged roof edges, vents, and gaps where utility lines enter upper floors.
Seal Every Entry Point
Exclusion is the single most important step. Trapping and baiting won’t solve the problem if new rats can walk in through the same openings. Rats can squeeze through gaps as small as half an inch. That’s roughly the diameter of a dime.
Walk your entire property and inspect the foundation, roof edges, utility line entry points, vents, and garage areas. Inside, check the attic, crawl space, and anywhere you’ve seen activity. Look for gaps around pipes, cables, doors, and windows. Gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or even metal often indicate entry points.
Seal openings with materials rats can’t chew through:
- Hardware cloth (wire mesh): Use 19-gauge, half-inch mesh for rats. For mice too, use 24-gauge, quarter-inch mesh.
- Galvanized sheet metal: 24 gauge or heavier for flat surfaces. Perforated metal grills should be 14 gauge.
- Copper or stainless steel wool: For gaps under three-quarters of an inch that can’t be sealed by other means, tightly wedge metal wool into the opening.
Don’t use expanding foam, plastic, or regular steel wool alone. Rats chew through all of these. Foam can work as a temporary filler behind hardware cloth, but it’s not a barrier on its own.
Set Traps the Right Way
Snap traps remain one of the most effective tools for killing rats. But placement and technique matter far more than the trap itself.
Place traps along walls, fence lines, or any linear surface rats travel. Rats stick to edges and rarely cross open spaces. Position the trigger end facing the wall, or set two traps side by side with triggers facing outward. Setting traps in groups of three in a row with alternating trigger directions is another effective configuration. Always use multiple traps. A single trap is easy for a rat to avoid.
For bait, choose something the rats are already eating if you can tell, or use a pea-sized amount of a high-value food like peanut butter, dried fruit, or nuts. Be cautious with peanut butter in areas where children or pets could access the traps.
Here’s a step most people skip: prebait your traps. Place the traps with bait in active areas but leave them unset for a couple of days. Let the rats feed from the traps and get comfortable. Once the bait has been taken multiple times, then set the traps. Rats are naturally suspicious of new objects in their environment, and prebaiting overcomes that wariness. Set traps only at night, since rats are nocturnal. During the day, leave the traps in place but unset.
Eliminate Food and Water Sources
Rats stay where they can eat and drink. Removing those resources makes your trapping more effective (hungry rats are more likely to take bait) and makes your property less attractive to new arrivals.
Store all food in thick plastic, glass, or metal containers. This includes pet food, birdseed, and pantry staples. Take garbage out regularly and use bins with tight-fitting lids. Clean up fallen fruit from trees, pick up pet food bowls at night, and fix any dripping faucets or standing water sources. Compost bins are a common rat magnet; use enclosed composters rather than open piles.
Reduce outdoor shelter by trimming dense vegetation away from your home’s exterior, clearing wood piles, and removing ground-level clutter where rats can nest. For roof rats, cut tree branches that overhang or touch your roof.
Why Repellents Don’t Work Long-Term
Peppermint oil, ultrasonic devices, and electromagnetic repellents are widely marketed, but the evidence behind them is weak. Ultrasonic repellers emit high-frequency sounds meant to disturb rodents, and while a handful of lab studies show short-term effects, real-world results are inconsistent. Homeowners commonly report a brief reduction in activity followed by a full return to normal. Rats simply adapt.
Peppermint oil follows the same pattern. It may cause temporary avoidance, but the scent fades quickly and rats’ need for food, water, and shelter consistently overrides any aversion to a smell. No repellent closes the holes rats use to enter your home. Lasting control requires physically removing the animals, cutting off resources, and sealing the structure.
Rodenticides: Effective but Risky
Rat poisons (rodenticides) fall into two main categories. Anticoagulant poisons prevent blood clotting, causing internal bleeding over several days. Neurotoxic poisons disrupt energy production in brain cells, leading to nervous system failure. Both are lethal to rats but carry real risks to pets, children, and wildlife.
If a dog or cat eats a poisoned rat, it can be exposed to the toxin secondhand. This secondary poisoning risk extends to owls, hawks, and other predators. For outdoor use, bait must be placed inside tamper-resistant bait stations, which are locked boxes that allow rats to enter but keep children, pets, and larger animals out.
For most homeowners, trapping combined with exclusion is safer and equally effective. If you do use rodenticides, place them only inside secured bait stations and check them regularly. Never scatter loose poison in attics, garages, or yards.
When to Call a Professional
Professional rat exclusion typically costs between $300 and $1,500, depending on the size of your home and the severity of the infestation. A thorough inspection takes 45 minutes to over an hour. The technician walks the full property, documents every gap and vulnerability with its size and location, then seals each point with chew-resistant materials specific to that spot. After sealing, they re-inspect the entire perimeter and often place monitoring devices near previous activity zones to verify the job holds.
Professional help makes sense when you’re dealing with a large infestation, when rats are in hard-to-reach areas like walls or sewer lines, or when you’ve tried trapping and exclusion on your own without results. Rats reproduce quickly. A female can produce several litters per year, so a small problem can scale fast if initial efforts don’t work.
Safe Cleanup After Removal
Rat droppings, urine, and nesting material can carry serious pathogens, including bacteria that cause leptospirosis and, in some regions, hantavirus. Safe cleanup matters.
Start by ventilating the area. Open doors and windows for at least 30 minutes and leave during that time. Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings, as this can send infectious particles airborne. Instead, spray all contaminated material (droppings, nests, dead rats, used traps) with a disinfectant or a fresh 10% bleach solution and let it soak for 10 to 20 minutes.
Wear nitrile or vinyl gloves for all handling. For heavy infestations, where you’re seeing piles of droppings or multiple nests, add protective goggles, disposable coveralls, and an N-100 respirator. Pick up soaked material using an inverted plastic bag over your gloved hand, seal it, then double-bag it for disposal. Wash gloves with disinfectant before removing them, then wash your hands thoroughly. Launder any clothes worn during cleanup in hot water with detergent. A HEPA vacuum can be used after wet cleaning is complete, but dispose of the filter afterward.
