How to Get Rid of Muskrats in a Pond for Good

Muskrats can be removed from a pond through trapping, physical barriers, habitat modification, and water-level management. Most pond owners need a combination of these methods, since removing the animals without changing the habitat just invites new ones to move in. The approach you choose depends on how much damage has already occurred, your local wildlife laws, and whether you want to handle it yourself or hire a professional.

Why Muskrats Are a Problem for Ponds

Muskrats burrow into earthen dams, dikes, and banks, typically 6 to 18 inches below the water surface, though den entrances can sit anywhere from a few inches to three feet underwater. These burrows have underwater entrances and above-water living chambers, which means the tunnels can run deep into the structure of your pond’s banks. Over time, this weakens the integrity of the dam or embankment, leading to water leaks, muddy water, and in poorly designed ponds, outright collapse of sections of the bank.

If you’re noticing new erosion along your pond’s edges, unexplained drops in water level, muddy water near the banks, or visible slide marks where animals enter and exit the water, you likely have an active muskrat population. They also build dome-shaped lodges from vegetation in shallower areas, which are easy to spot.

Check Your State’s Trapping Laws First

Before you set a single trap, look up your state’s regulations on muskrat removal. Muskrats are classified as furbearers in most states, which means trapping them is legal but governed by seasonal restrictions and permit requirements. In New York, for example, you can take muskrats that are damaging your property even outside the normal trapping season, but any animal taken during the closed season must be buried or cremated immediately.

Relocating muskrats is illegal in many states. You generally cannot live-trap a muskrat and release it on public land, in a park, or on someone else’s property. This is partly because relocation spreads disease and partly because it rarely solves the problem: relocated muskrats often don’t survive, and new ones move into the vacated territory. If you’re not comfortable handling removal yourself, contact a licensed nuisance wildlife control operator in your area.

Trapping: The Most Effective Removal Method

Trapping is the primary way to reduce an existing muskrat population in a pond. The two most commonly recommended traps are the size 110 Conibear (a body-gripping trap) and the #1 or #1½ steel leg-hold trap. Conibear traps are generally preferred because they kill almost instantly, which means they can be placed in shallow or deep water runways without the animal escaping. Leg-hold traps need to be set near deeper water because muskrats instinctively dive when alarmed, and the trap relies on drowning to complete the catch.

To find the right placement, look for “runs” along the bank. These are worn paths where muskrats travel between their den and the water or between the water and feeding areas. You’ll often see flattened vegetation, muddy trails, or small channels in the bank. Place the trap underwater as close to the den entrance or feeding trail as possible without blocking the trap’s mechanism, and stake it securely so the trap doesn’t drift or get pulled away.

If you’re using a leg-hold trap, set it in two to three inches of water and stake it toward deeper water so the muskrat drowns quickly. For Conibear traps, position them directly in the underwater runway or at the burrow entrance. Trapping is most productive in fall and early winter when muskrats are most active and fur is in prime condition, but it can be done year-round where regulations allow.

Install Riprap to Protect Banks

Killing or removing existing muskrats doesn’t prevent new ones from colonizing your pond. Physical barriers are the most reliable long-term deterrent. The standard recommendation is to line vulnerable banks with riprap (large rocks), a 6- to 12-inch layer of sand or pea gravel, or 1-by-2-inch mesh wire laid flat against the bank surface. The key measurement: cover at least two feet above and three feet below the normal water line. This range blocks the zone where muskrats prefer to dig their burrow entrances.

Riprap works because muskrats can’t excavate through heavy stone. They need soft, compacted earth to tunnel into, so covering the bank with rock or wire forces them to look elsewhere. Focus your efforts on the dam and any steep, earthen banks first, since these are the areas where burrowing causes the most structural damage. Gradually sloping banks are naturally less attractive to muskrats than steep ones.

Reduce Food Sources With Vegetation Management

Muskrats eat aquatic vegetation, and cattails are one of their preferred food sources. Dense stands of cattails along your pond’s edges are essentially a buffet that will attract and sustain a muskrat population. Removing or thinning this vegetation makes your pond less hospitable.

Cutting cattails above the waterline won’t kill them. The root systems (rhizomes) sit beneath the soil, and the plants will regrow. If the cattails are newly established, you can dig up the rhizomes and physically remove them, but once a stand is well established, mechanical removal becomes very difficult. Frequent mowing has worked in some cases to exhaust the plants over time.

For larger infestations, aquatic-approved herbicides are the more practical option. Glyphosate formulations registered for aquatic use are rated excellent for cattail control when applied to plants above the waterline with the proper surfactant. Other aquatic herbicides containing imazamox or imazapyr also rate excellent. These are systemic, meaning the plant absorbs them and they work from the inside, so results take longer than contact herbicides but are more thorough. Always use formulations specifically labeled for aquatic environments. Standard terrestrial herbicides are not the same product and can harm fish, invertebrates, and water quality.

Lower the Water Level to Expose Burrows

Drawing down your pond’s water level by several feet is a useful supplemental tactic. Lowering the water exposes bank den entrances that were previously hidden underwater, which does two things: it makes muskrats visible and vulnerable to natural predators like foxes, coyotes, and raptors, and it eliminates the steep, water-adjacent bank profile that muskrats prefer for burrowing. A drawdown during winter months is especially effective because food is already scarce and muskrats have fewer options for relocating.

This method works best in combination with trapping. Once the water is low and burrow entrances are visible, you can identify exactly where the muskrats are active and place traps more precisely. It also gives you the chance to inspect your dam and banks for structural damage before refilling.

Why Chemical Repellents Don’t Work

There are no EPA-registered chemical repellents or toxicants specifically approved for muskrat control in aquatic environments. Any pesticide used in or near water must go through extensive federal and state-level review covering toxicity to fish, invertebrates, waterfowl, and potential contamination of drinking water. The testing requirements are stringent: regulators evaluate whether a compound causes birth defects, tumors, or other abnormalities after long-term exposure, whether it leaves residues in potable water or fish, and how it breaks down in the environment. No muskrat-specific poison has cleared these hurdles.

Products marketed as muskrat repellents online are either unregistered (and therefore illegal to use as advertised) or so ineffective that wildlife agencies don’t recommend them. Your time and money are better spent on trapping and bank reinforcement.

Putting It All Together

The most reliable approach combines immediate population reduction with long-term habitat changes. Start by trapping the muskrats currently living in your pond. While the population is down, install riprap or wire mesh on your dam and the most vulnerable banks, covering two feet above to three feet below the waterline. Thin out dense cattail stands and other emergent vegetation that serve as food. If your pond allows it, consider a winter drawdown to expose remaining burrows and discourage recolonization. This layered strategy addresses both the animals already there and the conditions that attracted them in the first place.
