How to Get Rid of Moles in Your Yard: What Works

Trapping is the most reliable way to get rid of moles in your yard. Repellents, grub treatments, and home remedies get a lot of attention, but university extension services consistently point to mechanical traps as the only method with a strong track record. Before you buy anything, though, it helps to confirm you’re actually dealing with moles and not another burrowing pest.

Make Sure It’s Actually Moles

Moles, gophers, and voles all tear up lawns, but the damage looks different. Mole mounds are circular or volcano-shaped, with a soil plug in the center (or no visible plug at all). The dirt in these mounds tends to be clumpy. You’ll also see raised ridges just beneath the surface where moles hunt for food. These shallow feeding tunnels are the signature damage most people notice first.

Gopher mounds, by contrast, are crescent or horseshoe-shaped with the soil plug off to one side, and their tunnels run 6 to 12 inches underground. Voles create visible runways on the surface connecting small burrow openings, usually hidden under grass. Voles also gnaw on tree bark at ground level. If your damage doesn’t match the volcano mounds and raised surface ridges, you may need a different approach entirely.

Why Grub Control Won’t Solve the Problem

One of the most persistent myths in lawn care is that killing grubs will drive moles away. It won’t. Moles eat grubs, but earthworms make up the majority of their diet. They also feed on beetle larvae, ants, and other small soil organisms. Purdue University’s plant diagnostics lab puts it bluntly: even in grub-free lawns, moles continue to thrive because earthworms are always present. Spending money on grub treatments for mole control is essentially wasted effort. You can’t eliminate earthworms from healthy soil, and you wouldn’t want to.

Trapping: The Most Effective Method

Two trap designs dominate the market. Harpoon traps drive spears downward through the tunnel when a mole trips the trigger. Scissor traps close jaws across the tunnel when triggered. Both work well when placed correctly. Trap placement matters more than which style you choose.

Finding an Active Tunnel

Moles maintain a sprawling network of tunnels, but they don’t use all of them regularly. Setting a trap in an abandoned tunnel is the most common reason people fail. To test whether a tunnel is active, poke a small hole through the top with a stick and wait 24 hours. If the hole has been repaired and plugged, the tunnel is active and worth trapping. If the hole is still open, move on to another tunnel.

The straight runs connecting mounds to each other are your best bet. These are the permanent highways moles travel repeatedly. They’re often slightly deeper and less obvious than the winding, shallow feeding tunnels you see zig-zagging across the lawn, but they produce far more consistent catches.

Setting a Harpoon Trap

Once you’ve confirmed the tunnel is active, lightly press down a small section of it with your hand or foot. Don’t pack the soil hard. Too much compaction makes the mole dig around the blockage instead of repairing it. Position the trap so the legs straddle the tunnel without any part blocking the passage. Pull the handle up and down a few times to confirm the spears move freely. Then step on the anchors and pull the handle fully up to set it. The spear tips should sit flush with the ground with no gap where debris could block them.

Setting a Scissor Trap

After confirming the tunnel is active and depressing the surface, place the unset trap so the jaws will close across the tunnel, not along it. Step on the foot lever several times to open and close the jaws. This clears a clean path through the soil for the jaws to travel. Then press the foot lever all the way down to set the trap. When it’s properly set, the lever stays depressed on its own. Make sure the trigger plate sits flush with the soil.

For either trap type, placing an upturned five-gallon bucket over the set protects it from curious pets, children, and light. If a trap triggers without catching anything repeatedly, or if the active tunnel sits deeper than about an inch, you can dig down to expose the tunnel, place a small dirt barricade inside it, set the trap over that barricade, and gently replace the surrounding soil.

Check Local Regulations First

Trapping laws vary by state. Washington state, for example, prohibits body-piercing mole traps (including harpoon-style traps) under Initiative 713, which broadly bans body-gripping traps. Even special permits from the state wildlife department don’t cover those trap types in Washington. Other states have their own rules. Before purchasing traps, check with your state’s department of fish and wildlife or cooperative extension service to confirm which devices are legal where you live.

Castor Oil Repellents

Castor oil is the one repellent with at least some evidence behind it. Liquid castor oil products have shown minor effectiveness in repelling eastern moles. One university study found that a castor oil treatment reduced mole activity in a treated area for over 30 days. That’s modest, but it’s more than most repellents can claim.

The key is getting the product deep into the soil. You need to irrigate the area with about half an inch of water before applying the repellent, then follow up with at least an inch of water afterward. Without thorough watering, the castor oil stays on the surface and does nothing. Granular castor oil products have performed worse than liquid versions in preliminary testing, so liquid formulations are the better choice if you go this route.

Castor oil works best as a way to push moles out of a specific zone, like a garden bed, rather than eliminating them from your entire property. It’s a temporary deterrent, not a permanent solution.

What Doesn’t Work

Several popular home remedies have no evidence of effectiveness and some carry real risks.

  • Chewing gum: The idea is that a mole will eat gum placed in its tunnel, fail to digest it, and die. Moles won’t touch it. Nothing about chewing gum smells or tastes like their food. And moles routinely digest insect exoskeletons, some of the toughest biological material around, so gum wouldn’t pose a digestive problem even if they did eat it.
  • Mothballs: People toss mothballs into tunnels hoping the fumes will drive moles out. Mothballs are actually a registered insecticide regulated by the EPA, and using them in soil is an off-label application. The active chemicals evaporate within minutes to hours outdoors, making them useless underground. Worse, those chemicals are carcinogenic and can leach into groundwater. They’re especially dangerous around children and pets.
  • Fumigation and gas cartridges: Unlike a groundhog’s short, contained burrow, a mole’s tunnel network is an enormous, branching grid. There simply isn’t enough fumigant to fill the system, and the gas disperses through the porous soil long before reaching the mole.
  • Sonic spikes: Solar-powered vibrating stakes are widely sold, but results are inconsistent at best. User reports range from slightly reduced digging to no effect whatsoever. No university extension service recommends them as a primary control method.

A Practical Plan

Start by surveying your yard to identify the main tunnel routes, especially the straight runs between mounds. Test two or three tunnels for activity using the poke-and-wait method. Set traps in the active tunnels, check them daily, and relocate any trap that hasn’t caught anything within three days to a different active tunnel. Most people see results within a week or two of consistent trapping.

If you’d rather avoid killing moles or live in a state where body-gripping traps are restricted, liquid castor oil applied with heavy irrigation can reduce activity in targeted areas for roughly a month at a time. You’ll likely need to reapply after heavy rain or as the product breaks down in the soil. For persistent or large-scale infestations, licensed wildlife control operators have access to additional tools and can handle trapping where regulations make DIY options complicated.
