Moles and voles require completely different removal strategies because they cause different types of damage and behave in different ways. Moles are insectivores that tunnel through soil hunting earthworms, tearing up your lawn from below. Voles are rodents that chew through plant roots, bulbs, bark, and turf at the surface. Knowing which one you’re dealing with, or whether you have both, determines what will actually work.
Moles vs. Voles: Identifying the Problem
The damage patterns are distinct. Moles leave raised, squiggly ridges across your lawn where they’ve tunneled just below the surface looking for food. You’ll also see volcano-shaped mounds of excavated soil. The grass above shallow tunnels feels spongy underfoot and can brown out when roots lose contact with soil.
Vole damage looks different. Voles create narrow, well-worn runways through grass and mulch, often visible as bare pathways about two inches wide. They chew the bark off trees and shrubs, sometimes stripping it all the way around the trunk or branch. Young trees, especially those only a year or two old, can die from this girdling damage because it cuts off water and nutrient flow. Voles also eat flower bulbs, root vegetables, and the crowns of perennial plants.
If you see raised tunnels and soil mounds, you have moles. If you see surface runways and chewed bark or missing plants, you have voles. Some yards have both.
The Most Effective Way to Remove Moles
Trapping is the most reliable mole control method. Three trap designs work well: harpoon, scissor-jawed, and choker. Each takes some practice to use correctly, but the core technique is the same: find an active tunnel, then set the trap directly in the mole’s path.
Finding Active Tunnels
Moles use some tunnels repeatedly and others just once during a foraging run. You need to identify the active, regularly traveled tunnels. Use a broomstick or your finger to poke small test holes in several tunnel ridges across your yard. Check a day later. Tunnels where the hole has been repaired are active runs, and those are where you set traps.
Setting Traps Correctly
For shallow tunnels with less than an inch of soil on top, scissor and harpoon traps can be placed from above without digging. Center a scissor trap so its jaws straddle the tunnel, or position a harpoon trap with its prongs directly over the run. Use a flat blade like a masonry trowel to clear a path so the trap jaws or prongs can move freely through the soil. Then press down the loose soil where the trigger will sit, creating a small obstruction that the mole will push against as it passes through.
For deeper runs, you’ll need to excavate some soil first. Pack soil into the center of the exposed tunnel to create a trigger point, set the trap over it, and replace the loose soil so the opening doesn’t spook the mole. Choker traps are directional, meaning they only catch a mole coming from one direction. You’ll need two choker traps at each site, one facing each way. Stake choker traps down so a caught mole can’t drag the trap away.
If you haven’t caught anything within three days, move the trap to a different active run.
Why Grub Treatments Don’t Work
A persistent myth suggests that killing lawn grubs will drive moles away. It won’t. Moles eat grubs when available, but the bulk of their diet is earthworms. Purdue University’s plant diagnostics lab puts it bluntly: even in grub-free lawns, moles survive just fine because earthworms are always present. Spending money on grub treatments for mole control is a waste.
The Most Effective Way to Remove Voles
Standard mouse snap traps are the go-to tool for voles. The key difference from mole trapping is volume. A small garden needs at least a dozen traps. Larger yards may require 50 or more, because vole populations can be dense and each trap only catches one animal at a time.
Trap Placement Along Runways
Voles rarely leave their established runways, so trap placement matters more than bait. Set snap traps at right angles to the runways with the trigger end sitting inside the path. You can generally leave the traps unbaited, since voles will trip them simply by running their usual routes. If you do use bait (peanut butter works), cover the trap with a piece of rain gutter or similar enclosure to prevent catching birds.
Check traps daily. Remove caught voles and reset any sprung traps. When you stop catching voles at one location, move the trap 15 to 20 feet to a new runway. Wear rubber gloves when handling dead voles, as they can carry parasites. A simple technique: slip a plastic bag over your hand, grab the vole, then turn the bag inside out around it for disposal.
Castor Oil Repellents: Limited but Real
Castor oil-based repellents have shown minor effectiveness against moles. In one study, a castor oil product reduced mole activity in treated areas for over 30 days. The catch is that the product needs to be thoroughly watered into the soil to have any effect. The recommended approach is to irrigate the area with half an inch of water before applying the repellent, then follow up with an inch or more of water afterward.
This makes castor oil a reasonable supplement to trapping, particularly if you want to push moles away from a specific zone like a flower bed. It’s not reliable enough to use as your only strategy, and its effects on voles are even less well-documented.
Protecting Trees and Gardens With Barriers
For voles specifically, physical exclusion is one of the most dependable long-term solutions. Wrap the base of young trees with cylinders made from hardware cloth (wire mesh) with openings no larger than a quarter inch. Bury the bottom edge at least three inches below the soil surface so voles can’t tunnel underneath. The cylinder should extend higher than your typical snow line, because voles will travel under snow cover and chew bark they can reach at that elevated level.
Raised garden beds lined with hardware cloth on the bottom can also protect root vegetables and bulbs. For individual plantings, you can create underground baskets of the same quarter-inch mesh and plant bulbs inside them.
Habitat Changes That Reduce Both Pests
Voles depend on ground cover for protection from predators. Tall grass, heavy mulch layers, dense ground cover plants, and brush piles all create ideal vole habitat. Keeping grass mowed short, pulling mulch a few inches away from tree trunks, and clearing debris from garden edges makes your yard less hospitable. This won’t eliminate an established population, but it slows reinfestation after trapping.
Moles are harder to discourage through habitat changes because their food source, earthworms, lives in healthy soil. A lush, well-watered lawn is actually prime mole territory. During dry summers and frozen winters, earthworms move deeper into the soil, and moles follow them down. This is why surface tunneling peaks in spring and fall when the soil is moist and worms are near the surface. Timing your trapping efforts for these active periods gives you the best results.
Encouraging natural predators helps with both species. Owls, hawks, foxes, and snakes all prey on voles. Cats are effective vole hunters. For moles, dogs and cats occasionally catch them at tunnel openings, though this is less reliable. Installing an owl box can attract barn owls, which are voracious rodent hunters and can put meaningful pressure on a vole population over time.
