How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants Naturally

Getting rid of carpenter ants naturally starts with finding where they’re nesting, then combining physical barriers, desiccant dusts, and bait strategies to destroy the colony. Unlike most household ants, carpenter ants hollow out wood to build their nests, so simply killing the ones you see on your countertop won’t solve the problem. The key is locating and eliminating the nest itself, because the infestation will continue as long as the colony survives.

Find the Nest First

Everything else you do is a temporary fix if you never find the colony. Carpenter ants typically maintain a parent nest outdoors in decaying wood (tree stumps, roots, logs, fence posts, landscape timbers) and one or more satellite nests indoors. The satellite nests hold workers and developing ants but not necessarily the queen, which means you often need to trace the trail back to the parent colony outside.

Indoor satellite nests show up in moist or water-damaged wood: behind bathroom tiles, around tubs and dishwashers, under roofing, in attic beams, beneath subfloor insulation, and inside hollow spaces like wall voids, doors, and even curtain rods. They can also nest in foam insulation. Look for small piles of sawdust-like shavings (called frass) near baseboards, window frames, or door frames. These shavings are wood the ants have excavated, not eaten.

The best scouting window is after dark. Carpenter ants are most active at night, so follow their trails with a flashlight between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. to trace them back toward the nest. Tapping on walls and listening for a faint rustling sound can also help pinpoint nest locations inside wall voids.

Eliminate Moisture Problems

Carpenter ants prefer moist or decaying wood, though wood that was previously saturated and has softened can also attract them even after it dries. Fixing the moisture source is the single most important prevention and control step, because without damp wood, your home becomes a far less appealing nesting site.

Check for and repair leaky roofs, windows, doorframes, and plumbing. Ensure proper ventilation in attics, crawl spaces, and bathrooms. Replace any rotted or water-damaged wood in the structure. Paint or seal exposed wood before it has a chance to absorb moisture. If you have wood siding or framing that contacts the soil directly, eliminate that contact point, as it wicks moisture straight into the wood and creates an open invitation.

Cut Off Access to Your Home

Trim all trees and bushes so that no branches touch the house. Carpenter ants use overhanging limbs as highways from outdoor nests to your roof and walls. Remove dead stumps from your yard and seal any openings in living trees, since both are common parent nest sites.

Store firewood on a concrete pad above the soil and away from the house. Only keep one heating season’s worth on hand. Firewood stacked against a wall is one of the most common ways carpenter ants bridge the gap between an outdoor colony and your home’s interior. Seal cracks around foundations, utility lines, and window frames with caulk to close off entry points.

Diatomaceous Earth for Nest Treatment

Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a powder made from crushed fossilized algae. Each particle has microscopic sharp edges that scratch the waxy coating on an ant’s exoskeleton. Once that coating is compromised, the ant loses moisture rapidly and dies from dehydration. It’s nontoxic to humans and pets but highly effective as a physical insecticide.

Apply DE directly into wall voids, cracks, and crevices where you’ve seen ant activity or suspect a nest. A plastic squeeze bottle or bulb duster works best for puffing a thin layer into tight spaces. A light dusting is more effective than a thick pile, because ants will walk around heavy deposits. Reapply after any moisture exposure, since wet DE loses its abrasive properties until it dries completely.

Boric Acid Bait

Boric acid works as a slow-acting stomach poison. When mixed into a bait, foraging ants carry it back to the nest and share it with the colony, including larvae and the queen. The delayed action is important: if the ant dies before returning to the nest, the bait never reaches the rest of the colony.

A standard liquid bait recipe from university extension research: dissolve 1 teaspoon of boric acid powder and 3 tablespoons of white sugar into warm distilled or bottled water, filling to about 1¾ cups total. Stir until fully dissolved. Soak cotton balls in the solution and place them along active ant trails, near entry points, and close to suspected nest sites. Replace the cotton balls every few days.

One limitation: carpenter ants shift their food preferences throughout the year. They may favor sugary foods during some seasons and protein-rich foods during others. If the sugar bait isn’t attracting them, try mixing boric acid into peanut butter or canned tuna at a ratio of about 1% boric acid by weight. Watch which bait they take and adjust accordingly.

Essential Oil Repellents

Several essential oils can repel carpenter ants and disrupt the pheromone trails they use to navigate. Peppermint oil overwhelms these scent trails, effectively confusing foragers and breaking their communication lines. Clove oil contains eugenol, a compound that acts as a contact insecticide by targeting the ant’s nervous system. Citronella oil also works as a repellent for carpenter ants.

To make a spray, combine 35 drops of clove essential oil and 35 drops of peppermint essential oil with 100 ml of water in a spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Spray along baseboards, window sills, door thresholds, and any trails you’ve identified. These oils won’t eliminate a colony on their own, but they’re useful for deterring ants from specific areas and disrupting established routes into your living space.

Keep in mind that essential oil sprays evaporate and need to be reapplied every few days. They work best as a complement to nest-targeting strategies like DE or boric acid bait, not as a standalone solution.

Wipe Out Pheromone Trails

When you see a line of carpenter ants marching along a baseboard or countertop, they’re following a chemical trail laid down by scouts. Killing the visible ants without erasing that trail means new ants will follow the same path within hours. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, or use soapy water (a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle), and thoroughly wipe down the entire trail. This destroys the pheromone markers and forces foragers to start over.

Do this every time you spot a trail, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. It slows the colony’s ability to find food and makes your baits the most attractive option available.

How Long Natural Methods Take

Natural approaches require patience and persistence. Boric acid baits may take several weeks to significantly reduce a colony, since the poison works slowly and needs to be shared throughout the nest. Diatomaceous earth kills individual ants within 24 to 48 hours of contact but only works on ants that physically walk through it.

Reapply treatments every four to six weeks during the summer months, and within a week after heavy rain if you’ve treated outdoor areas. The critical benchmark is whether you’re still seeing active trails after consistent treatment over six to eight weeks. Carpenter ant colonies grow slowly, so if you’ve located and treated the nest directly, you’re unlikely to need ongoing treatment. But if ant activity persists despite weeks of effort, the nest probably hasn’t been found. The University of Georgia’s entomology program puts it plainly: the infestation will continue unless the nest is found and eliminated, regardless of how much you spray or bait.

For large or hard-to-locate colonies, especially those embedded deep in wall voids or structural timbers, natural methods alone may not be sufficient. A professional inspection focused specifically on locating the nest site is worth considering if your DIY efforts stall.
