Rats are nocturnal and deliberately avoid you, so spotting one directly is unlikely. Finding a rat in your house is really about reading the signs it leaves behind, narrowing down where it’s hiding, and using the right tools to confirm its location. Most people never see the rat itself until they’ve already traced its routes and identified its nest.
Start With the Signs Rats Leave Behind
Rats constantly leave physical evidence along their travel paths. The fastest way to locate a rat is to identify these clues and follow them back to the source.
Droppings are the most obvious giveaway. Rat droppings are dark, roughly half to three-quarters of an inch long, and shaped like a cooked grain of rice with blunt or tapered ends. Fresh ones look shiny and moist; older droppings turn dry and crumbly. If you’re finding droppings closer to a quarter inch with pointed ends, those are from a mouse, not a rat. Norway rats (the larger, ground-dwelling species) leave rectangular droppings about three-quarters of an inch long in small clusters. Roof rats leave slightly smaller, curved droppings that tend to be scattered rather than grouped.
Grease marks appear along walls, pipes, and baseboards where rats travel repeatedly. Their fur carries natural oils and dirt that rub off on surfaces, creating dark, greasy streaks. These rub marks are especially visible on light-colored walls and along the tops of baseboards. Follow the trail: the darker and greasier the mark, the more frequently that path is used.
Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, drywall, or wiring tell you a rat has been working an area. Rat teeth leave marks noticeably wider than mouse gnaw marks. Fresh gnaw marks are lighter in color and darken with age.
Sounds are your best nighttime clue. Scratching, scurrying, or squeaking in walls, ceilings, or under floors typically starts after dark when rats become active. Pay attention to where in the house you hear it. Sounds coming from above usually point to roof rats in the attic. Sounds from ground level or below suggest Norway rats in the basement, crawl space, or wall voids.
Where Rats Hide by Species
The two rat species that invade homes have very different preferences, and knowing which one you’re dealing with cuts your search area dramatically.
Roof rats are excellent climbers and prefer elevated spaces. Check your attic first, especially around rafters, insulation, and stored boxes. They also nest in false ceilings, inside wall cavities on upper floors, in roof eaves, and in vents. If you have trees with branches touching or overhanging your roof, roof rats may be using those as highways into your home.
Norway rats are larger, heavier, and stick to the ground. They prefer basements, crawl spaces, the areas under decks and porches, and ground-level wall voids. They build elaborate burrow systems and are often found near water sources like utility rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Outside, look for burrow holes along your foundation.
Both species nest in dark, enclosed spots that offer warmth and minimal disturbance. Common hiding places include the cavities behind kitchen appliances (especially refrigerators and stoves, where warmth and food crumbs converge), inside ductwork for heating and air conditioning, behind washing machines, in boxed-in plumbing, inside cabinets that are rarely opened, and even under car hoods in attached garages.
How to Track a Rat’s Path
Once you’ve found droppings, grease marks, or gnaw damage, you can narrow down the rat’s travel route and trace it back toward the nest.
Sprinkle a thin layer of flour or baby powder along baseboards and near suspected entry points before you go to bed. In the morning, check for footprints and tail drag marks. Rat footprints are noticeably larger than mouse prints, and the tracks will reveal exactly which direction the animal is traveling and how often it passes through.
A UV blacklight is one of the most effective inspection tools available. Rodent urine glows under ultraviolet light: bluish-white when fresh, yellowish-white when old. The key is looking for the right pattern. Rat urine appears as a series of droplets in a line, with larger drops at one end trailing to smaller ones. Norway rats and mice drag their tails, so you may see a smeared line running through the urine trail. Roof rats carry their tails off the ground, leaving clean droplet lines without smearing.
Not everything that glows under a blacklight is urine. Mold, glue, bleach, certain inks, oil, and grease lubricants all fluoresce too. To distinguish rat urine, focus on location and pattern. Fluorescence along a wall edge or known runway is a strong indicator. Large splash patterns radiating from a single point are more likely a human spill. An even, stippled glow across a surface is probably not rodent-related. Pet urine glows amber rather than the bluish-white of rodent urine.
Room-by-Room Inspection
Work systematically rather than randomly searching. Pull appliances away from walls in the kitchen and check behind and beneath the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Open lower cabinets and look in the back corners for droppings, shredded material, or grease smudges. Check under the kitchen sink where plumbing enters the wall, because any gap around a pipe wider than half an inch is large enough for a rat to squeeze through.
In the attic, use a flashlight and look along the edges where the roof meets the walls. Check around any stored boxes, especially cardboard, which rats chew through and nest inside. Look for disturbed or tunneled insulation. Rat nests are rough bundles of shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or plant material, usually tucked into a corner or crevice.
In basements and crawl spaces, inspect along the foundation walls, around water heaters, near any stored items on the floor, and around utility entry points. Norway rats in particular favor the undisturbed spaces behind stacked storage.
Bathrooms and laundry rooms deserve attention because of the water access. Check behind toilets, under sinks, and around the base of washing machines. Inspect any access panels to plumbing that might offer a route into wall voids.
Safety While Searching
Rat droppings and urine can carry hantavirus and other pathogens, so take precautions before you start poking around in confined spaces. Wear rubber or latex gloves and long sleeves. In enclosed areas like attics, crawl spaces, or sheds, wear at least a half-face respirator with a HEPA filter. A basic dust mask offers some protection but not nearly as much.
If you’re entering a space that’s been closed up for a while, open windows and doors and let it air out for at least an hour before going in. Never sweep or vacuum droppings, because that launches dried particles into the air where you can inhale them. Instead, spray droppings and any nesting material with a disinfectant solution (one cup of bleach to ten cups of water) and let it soak for five minutes before wiping up with disposable rags or paper towels. Bag everything in a sealed plastic bag and dispose of it in your outdoor trash.
For heavy contamination in an enclosed space like a crawl space or garage, professional cleanup is the safer route.
What to Do Once You Find the Rat
Locating the rat’s active areas and travel routes is the critical first step, because it tells you exactly where to place traps. Snap traps set directly along confirmed runways, with the trigger end facing the wall, are far more effective than traps placed randomly. Rats are cautious about new objects in their environment, so leave unset traps baited with peanut butter along the path for two or three nights before setting them. This lets the rat get comfortable with the trap before it becomes a threat.
Seal entry points with steel wool packed into gaps and covered with caulk, or use metal flashing for larger openings. Rats can chew through wood, plastic, and even aluminum, but they cannot gnaw through steel. Focus on gaps around pipes, vents, utility lines, and any crack wider than half an inch along your foundation or roofline.
If you’re finding droppings in multiple rooms, hearing activity in walls on different floors, or the signs persist after a week of trapping, you’re likely dealing with more than one rat. A single female rat can produce several litters a year, so early detection and consistent trapping make a significant difference in how quickly you resolve the problem.
