How to Deter Ants and Keep Them From Coming Back

The most effective way to deter ants is a combination of cutting off their food sources, sealing entry points, and using baits that destroy the colony at its source. Spraying visible ants only kills the few you see, while thousands more remain in the nest. A lasting solution targets why ants are entering your home and eliminates the colony’s ability to sustain itself.

Why Killing Visible Ants Doesn’t Work

The ants marching across your kitchen counter are foragers, a small fraction of the colony. When you spray and kill them, the colony simply sends more. Worse, some spray repellents can cause a colony to split and relocate, creating multiple nests where you previously had one. The goal isn’t to kill individual ants. It’s to either make your home unattractive to them or eliminate the entire colony through baits that foragers carry back to the queen.

Remove What’s Attracting Them

Ants enter your home because they’ve found food, water, or both. The single most effective deterrent is removing those rewards. Wipe down counters and stovetops after cooking. Store sugar, honey, and cereal in sealed containers. Don’t leave pet food bowls out overnight. Empty kitchen trash cans frequently and keep the lids clean.

Moisture matters just as much as food. Fix leaky faucets, dry out under-sink areas, and make sure your dishwasher seal is tight. Ants need water to survive, and a dripping pipe can sustain a colony for months. Different species prefer different foods: most common household ants like Argentine ants and odorous house ants gravitate toward sweets, while pavement ants go after proteins and grease, and thief ants prefer fatty foods. If you notice ants ignoring your sugar but swarming the dog’s food bowl, you’re dealing with a protein-loving species.

Seal Entry Points Around Your Home

Ants can squeeze through gaps smaller than a millimeter, so sealing cracks is one of the most permanent deterrents available. Start with the most common entry points: gaps where pipes and wires enter the foundation, cracks around windows and door frames, and openings near outdoor faucets, gas meters, dryer vents, and cable lines.

A good quality silicone or acrylic latex caulk handles most jobs. Latex caulk is easier to work with since it cleans up with water and can be painted over. For larger gaps, urethane expandable foam or copper mesh works well. Before applying any sealant, clean the crack and remove old peeling caulk so the new material adheres properly. Smooth the bead with a damp finger for a clean finish.

Don’t overlook doors. Install door sweeps at the base of all exterior doors and caulk along the bottom outside edge and sides of door thresholds. For garage doors, fit a rubber bottom seal (vinyl cracks in cold weather). Sliding glass doors often have gaps along the bottom track that you can fill with half-inch to three-quarter-inch foam weatherstripping.

Clean Up the Scent Trail

Ants navigate using chemical trails they leave behind for other workers to follow. When you see a line of ants, wipe the entire path with a sponge and soapy water. This removes the pheromone trail and prevents reinforcements from following the same route. Plain water won’t do the job; you need the surfactant in soap to break down the chemical signal.

You may have heard that vinegar disrupts ant trails. Research from Texas A&M tested this directly on fire ants and found that vinegar had no effect on pheromone trails. The ants completely ignored it and continued following their original path. Lemon juice fared only slightly better, distracting ants for roughly 30 seconds before they resumed normal activity. Both liquids evaporate quickly, especially in sunlight, which limits any temporary effect they might have. Soapy water is more reliable.

Use Baits to Eliminate the Colony

Baits are the most effective tool for long-term ant control because they exploit the colony’s own food-sharing behavior. Foraging ants find the bait, eat it, and carry it back to the nest where they feed it to the queen and other colony members. Because the active ingredient works slowly, the foragers survive long enough to distribute the poison throughout the colony before dying. This can destroy the entire nest, queen included.

Commercial bait stations are the easiest option. Prepackaged stations typically contain about 5.4% borate as the active ingredient. Place them along ant trails and near entry points, and leave them undisturbed. It typically takes 5 to 10 days before you notice fewer ants. Resist the urge to spray around the bait stations, since repellent sprays will keep ants away from the bait and defeat the purpose.

If you want a DIY approach, you can make an effective liquid bait with one teaspoon of boric acid powder and three tablespoons of white sugar dissolved in one and three-quarter cups of warm distilled or bottled water (avoid tap water, as the chlorine can reduce effectiveness). Place the solution in small containers near ant activity. This method requires patience. Allow ants to feed for up to one or even two months for full colony suppression.

Matching Bait to the Species

If ants aren’t taking your bait, you likely have the wrong attractant for that species. Sweet baits work year-round for Argentine ants and odorous house ants, the two most common indoor invaders. But Pharaoh ants prefer fats and proteins, so a sugar bait may sit untouched. Fire ants respond best to oil-based baits. If your sugar bait isn’t working after a few days, try a protein or grease-based option. You can test with a dab of peanut butter on one side of a card and a drop of honey on the other to see which the ants prefer.

Diatomaceous Earth as a Barrier

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a fine powder made from fossilized algae. When ants walk through it, the microscopic particles stick to their exoskeletons and create tiny abrasions that compromise the ant’s ability to retain moisture. The ant essentially dehydrates and dies over the course of hours to days. It’s nontoxic to humans and works purely through physical damage, so ants can’t develop resistance to it.

Apply a thin line along baseboards, behind appliances, and around entry points. The key limitation is that it only works when dry. Moisture renders it useless, so it’s best suited for indoor use in dry areas or protected outdoor spots. It also won’t eliminate a colony since it only kills ants that physically walk through it, making it a useful supplement to baits rather than a standalone solution.

Pet Safety With Natural Repellents

Many people turn to essential oils like peppermint or tea tree oil as natural ant repellents, but these can pose real risks to pets. In concentrated form, essential oils are dangerous for both dogs and cats. Animals that walk through spilled oils or lick treated surfaces can develop symptoms including unsteadiness, vomiting, diarrhea, and depression. With tea tree oil specifically, as few as seven or eight drops of concentrated oil can cause problems.

If you have pets, bait stations placed in areas your animals can’t access (behind appliances, inside cabinets) are generally the safer choice. Food-grade diatomaceous earth is also a lower-risk option, though you should avoid creating clouds of dust that pets or people might inhale.

Outdoor Prevention Around Your Foundation

Most ant colonies live outdoors and send foragers inside. Reducing ant populations near your home’s perimeter makes indoor invasions less likely. Keep mulch at least 12 inches away from the foundation, since it retains moisture and provides ideal nesting habitat. Trim tree branches and shrubs so they don’t touch the house, as ants use these as bridges to bypass ground-level barriers.

For trees close to your home that ants are using as highways, you can apply a sticky barrier product around the trunk to intercept them. On young or sensitive trees, wrap the trunk first with heavy paper or fabric tree wrap, then apply the sticky material to the wrap rather than directly to the bark.

Placing bait stations outdoors near the colony’s likely location is more effective than spraying the perimeter. Outdoor sprays break down quickly in sun and rain and only kill the ants they contact directly, while baits work their way back to the nest and address the source of the problem.
