Houseplant Pests: How to Identify and Get Rid of Them

The most common houseplant pests are spider mites, fungus gnats, mealybugs, scale insects, aphids, and thrips. Most of them are tiny enough to go unnoticed until they’ve already done visible damage, so knowing what to look for on your leaves, stems, and soil surface is the fastest way to catch an infestation early and keep it from spreading to the rest of your collection.

Aphids

Aphids are soft-bodied insects about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long that cluster on new growth and the undersides of leaves. They come in green, black, red, yellow, brown, or grey depending on the species, and they feed by piercing plant tissue and sucking out fluid. Heavy feeding causes leaves to wilt, curl, or distort, especially at the growing tips.

A telltale sign of aphids is honeydew, a sticky residue they excrete that coats leaves and nearby surfaces. If left unchecked, honeydew attracts sooty mold, a dark fungal coating that blocks light from reaching the leaf. A strong spray of water in the sink or shower knocks most aphids off, and insecticidal soap or neem oil handles larger infestations. Aphids reproduce quickly, so check back every few days and treat again if you see stragglers.

Spider Mites

Spider mites are nearly invisible to the naked eye, and most people notice the damage before they ever see the mite itself. Leaves develop fine stippling, tiny pale dots that eventually merge into a washed-out, bronzed appearance. In heavier infestations, you’ll spot fine silky webbing under leaves or where the leaf meets the stem.

Hot, dry conditions are the main trigger. Indoor heating in winter creates ideal conditions for spider mite populations to explode, as does placing plants near heat vents or in direct sun without adequate humidity. Regularly misting your plants or grouping them together to raise local humidity makes the environment less hospitable. For active infestations, wiping leaves with a damp cloth and spraying with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil works well. Repeat every five to seven days, because the eggs are resistant to most treatments and you need to catch newly hatched mites. One important note: broad-spectrum chemical insecticides can actually make spider mite problems worse by killing the predatory insects that naturally keep them in check.

Mealybugs

Mealybugs look like tiny tufts of white cotton nestled in leaf joints, along stems, or tucked into the crevices where leaves meet the main stalk. They’re soft, oval, wingless insects up to about 1/10 inch long, and some species cover themselves in a fluffy wax coating that makes them easy to identify once you know what you’re looking at. Like aphids, they produce honeydew.

Feeding damage shows up as yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dieback. Left alone long enough, mealybugs can kill a plant. The most effective first-line treatment is a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol, applied directly to each visible bug and egg cluster. The alcohol dissolves the waxy protective coating and kills both adults and eggs on contact. Use a fresh swab for each plant to avoid spreading the infestation. For larger outbreaks, follow up with insecticidal soap or neem oil, making sure to cover the undersides of leaves and all stem crevices.

Scale Insects

Scale insects are one of the sneakiest houseplant pests because they don’t look like insects at all. Adults appear as small, flat or slightly domed bumps on stems and leaf undersides, ranging from 1/8 to 1/2 inch across. They cover themselves in a waxy or shell-like coating that protects them from many contact sprays. There are two main types: soft scales, which produce honeydew and sooty mold, and armored scales, which don’t produce honeydew but form a harder protective shell.

The easiest stage to control is the crawler stage, when newly hatched nymphs are mobile and haven’t yet formed their protective covering. At this stage, insecticidal soap and horticultural oil are effective. Once they’ve settled in and formed their shell, they’re much harder to treat. Horticultural oil, applied thoroughly and repeated multiple times, can smother established adults. You can also scrape them off manually with a fingernail or soft brush. For stubborn infestations, systemic insecticides applied as a soil drench work well against soft scales, though they’re less reliable against armored scales. Multiple applications are almost always necessary because eggs sheltered under the female’s body can survive treatment and restart the population.

Thrips

Thrips are slender, barely visible insects (under 1/16 inch) that scrape the surface cells off leaves and suck out the contents. The damage is distinctive: irregular silvery or bronze patches on leaves, often accompanied by tiny dark specks of excrement that look like black pepper. Heavily affected leaves become papery, distorted, and may drop early. Thrips also damage flower buds, causing scarring and distortion on petals.

Part of what makes thrips tricky is that they pupate in the soil or leaf litter, so treating only the foliage misses part of the population. Horticultural oil and insecticidal soap provide some control, but spinosad-based sprays tend to be more effective. Spinosad penetrates a short distance into sprayed tissue, which helps it reach thrips feeding in protected spots like curled leaves or bud crevices. It remains active for a week or more after application. As with most houseplant pests, repeat treatments are key.

Fungus Gnats

Fungus gnats are the tiny dark flies you see hovering around your plant’s soil or flying toward windows. The adults are mostly a nuisance, but the larvae live in the top layer of potting mix and feed on organic matter, fungi, and fine roots. In large numbers, larval feeding can damage root systems and stunt growth, especially in seedlings and young plants.

Their life cycle is fast. A single female can lay up to 200 eggs in the soil during her seven-to-ten-day lifespan. Larvae develop and pupate near the soil surface, and the entire cycle from egg to adult can complete in as little as 17 days. This means populations build quickly once they get established. The simplest control is letting the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings, since the larvae need consistently moist conditions to thrive. For persistent problems, a soil drench with Bti (a naturally occurring bacterial insecticide that targets gnat larvae specifically) is effective. Multiple applications are usually needed to break the cycle. Note that Bt products labeled for caterpillar control are a different strain and won’t work on fungus gnats.

How to Treat Most Houseplant Pests

Several treatments work across multiple pest types, so you don’t necessarily need a different product for each bug.

Insecticidal soap kills soft-bodied insects like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites on contact by breaking down their outer coating. It has no residual activity, meaning it only works while wet, so thorough coverage is essential and you’ll need to reapply every few days.

Neem oil acts as both a contact killer and a feeding deterrent. A standard dilution is 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil per quart of water with a few drops of mild liquid soap as an emulsifier. Stronger concentrations increase the risk of leaf burn. Apply in early morning or evening, never in direct sunlight or on drought-stressed plants. Neem oil fails most often because people under-apply it, spray too infrequently, or skip the undersides of leaves.

Horticultural oil smothers pests and eggs by coating them in a thin film. It’s particularly useful against scale insects and spider mites. Multiple applications are standard because eggs sheltered under adults or in crevices can survive the first round.

Rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl) is ideal for spot-treating visible pests like mealybugs and scale crawlers. Dip a cotton swab in full-strength alcohol and apply directly to the pest. This targeted approach is less likely to damage foliage than spraying alcohol broadly. Use a different swab for each plant.

Biological Controls

Predatory mites are a chemical-free option that works well indoors against spider mites and other plant-feeding mites. Commercial blends typically include several species that cover a range of temperatures (roughly 47 to 104°F) and humidity levels (40 to 90%). They’re shipped in small sachets that you hang near affected plants. Keep the sachets out of direct sunlight and don’t let them dry out completely. This approach works best for ongoing prevention or moderate infestations rather than severe outbreaks.

Preventing Infestations

Quarantine every new plant for two to three weeks before placing it near your existing collection. During that time, inspect it carefully in natural daylight, using a magnifying glass if needed. Check in this order: leaf surfaces, undersides of leaves, the short stalks connecting leaves to stems, the main stem, and finally the soil surface. Many pests hitch a ride from nurseries and garden centers, and a two-week isolation period gives slow-developing infestations time to reveal themselves.

Beyond quarantine, regular inspection of your plants every week or two is the single best prevention strategy. Catching a handful of aphids on one leaf is a five-minute fix. Discovering a full-blown spider mite infestation across six plants is a weeks-long battle. Keep leaves clean by wiping them with a damp cloth periodically, which removes dust, improves the plant’s ability to photosynthesize, and physically removes pest eggs before they hatch. Avoid overwatering, since consistently soggy soil invites fungus gnats and root problems that weaken plants and make them more vulnerable to everything else.
