The most effective mixture to get rid of gnats combines apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap, which traps and kills adult gnats on contact. But if your gnat problem keeps coming back, you likely need a second mixture targeting the larvae hiding in your houseplant soil. Here’s how to make both, plus a biological option that wipes out an entire breeding cycle.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Dish Soap Trap
This is the go-to gnat killer for a reason: it’s cheap, fast, and uses ingredients you already have. Gnats are drawn to the fermented smell of apple cider vinegar. Normally they could land on the liquid surface and fly away, but a single drop of dish soap breaks the surface tension of the water, so gnats sink and drown instead of escaping.
To make it, combine one-third cup of apple cider vinegar with two tablespoons of water in a small jar, bowl, or ramekin. Add just one drop of a mild liquid dish soap like Dawn. That’s it. Set the mixture wherever you’re seeing the most gnats, whether that’s near your kitchen sink, fruit bowl, or houseplants. You should see dead gnats collecting in the liquid within hours.
A few tips to get better results: use multiple small containers spread around the problem area rather than one large one. Replace the mixture every two to three days, since the vinegar smell fades and the trap fills up. White vinegar works in a pinch, but apple cider vinegar’s stronger fermentation scent attracts significantly more gnats.
Hydrogen Peroxide Soil Drench for Larvae
If gnats keep appearing no matter how many you trap, the problem is almost certainly in your houseplant soil. Fungus gnats lay eggs in moist topsoil, and the larvae live in the top two to three inches, feeding on fungi and decaying plant matter. Killing the adults with a vinegar trap doesn’t stop the next generation from hatching. The entire lifecycle from egg to adult can complete in as little as 17 days, which is why infestations seem to explode overnight.
A hydrogen peroxide drench kills larvae on contact without harming your plants. Mix one part standard 3% hydrogen peroxide (the kind sold at any pharmacy) with four parts water. Pour the solution directly over the soil as you would a normal watering, soaking it thoroughly. You’ll see some fizzing at the surface. That’s the peroxide reacting with organic material and larvae in the soil. The solution breaks down into water and oxygen, so it’s completely safe for roots and actually adds a small oxygen boost to the soil.
One application kills the larvae present at that moment, but eggs already in the soil may hatch afterward. Repeat the drench every five to seven days for two to three weeks to catch each new wave before it matures into adults.
BTI “Mosquito Bit Tea” for Persistent Problems
For heavy infestations or large plant collections, a biological approach works better than hydrogen peroxide. Mosquito Bits and Mosquito Dunks contain a naturally occurring soil bacterium that specifically kills the larvae of gnats and mosquitoes while being harmless to plants, pets, and people. The active ingredient produces a protein that destroys larvae’s gut lining after they ingest it.
To make the mixture, add four tablespoons of Mosquito Bits to one gallon of warm water and let it soak for at least 30 minutes. Some growers steep it for two to four hours or even overnight for a stronger concentration. Strain out the bits (you can reuse them once or twice) and use the “tea” to water your plants as you normally would. The liquid carries the bacterium into the soil where larvae are actively feeding.
Repeat weekly for three consecutive weeks. That timeline covers the full gnat lifecycle and catches any larvae that hatch after the first treatment. As a preventive measure once the infestation clears, you can use the tea at every second or third watering to stop a new population from establishing.
Stopping Gnats From Coming Back
Every gnat mixture in the world is a temporary fix if your soil stays wet. Fungus gnats need moist topsoil to breed, and their eggs can’t survive in dry conditions. The single most important prevention step is letting the top one to two inches of soil dry out completely between waterings. For most houseplants, this means watering less frequently than you think you need to.
You can check soil moisture by pushing your finger an inch into the pot. If it feels damp, wait. A layer of coarse sand or decorative pebbles on the soil surface also helps by creating a dry barrier that discourages egg-laying. Bottom watering, where you set the pot in a tray of water and let it wick moisture upward, keeps the topsoil dry while still hydrating roots.
For fruit flies (the other common “gnat” in kitchens), the same vinegar trap works, but prevention means storing ripe fruit in the refrigerator, emptying kitchen trash frequently, and cleaning drains where organic residue builds up. A quick flush of boiling water down the drain once a week eliminates the film that drain flies breed in.
